  • 5 people just dislike it.....

  • 1.make it longer

    2.hang yourself from the bottom

    3.release

    outcome?

    LEVITATION!

  • @kindpotato You aren't a slinky, so no.

  • By the way, "Slinky" is a brand name, its actually just a Spring....

  • @DViverito1 yes, and Frisbee is actually a brand name, but what kind of asshole actually walks around calling it a "flying disk"?

  • Lmao they're doing this in a school of physics

  • four dislikes? who are they the physics police

  • 4 dislikes? who are they the physics police?

  • 4 dislikes? who are they? the physics police?

  • Too epic!!

  • Wow I just ruined the 44,444 views. MY BAD INTERNET!

  • "You call that a knife?! THIS is a knife!"

    "Uhh... that's a slinky."

  • @JaySmith91 I see you've played knifey/slinky before!!

  • @1veritasium I love you.

  • how does that not get into a huge tangle?

  • drop 5km Slinky from a plane

  • what's the music vid? it sounds familliar =)

  • I think there's a slight curve in your slinky

  • Hmm, lets get a really, really big slinky, attach a man at the lower end, and the top end on top of, let's say, the empire state building. Let the man hoover 1m above the pavement, and let go of the slinky! (Of course let's not mind the guy getting the slinky in the head)

  • @TheNoorac

How about a man dangling from a bungee cord? Cut the cord at the top, he doesn't fall until the top of the cord reaches him.

  • @busterbox not entirely true, the person will fall once the tension from the cord is released. the energy wave will travel down the cord and they fall... but cord is not like a slinky, the slinky is a super long wire twisted into a spring so the energy travels down it differently. the rope will happen a lot faster

  • @TheNoorac

Could be a trap in one of the cube-movies. First the guy doesnt really understand whats going on and looks up in amazement, and then gets shredded into tiny slices by a highspeed slinky.

  • thumbs up if redkb brought you here!

  • Where can i get a Vertasium shirt?

  • so nostalgic...

  • thats not science, its devil magic

  • It would be interesting to drop a ball at the same time and to think about what a free fall observer would see.

  • You're so cute lol. That was awesome. I was actually really wanting to try this after your slinky video and then, you uploaded this! :D

  • That Isn't a Slinky. Thats An Octopuss!

  • "No, I wanna go back up!"

  • The Slinky man! oh, that sounded nasty...

  • We have learned a lot about slinkys.

  • lol i wanna go under a big slinky from an airplane

  • WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?

  • T_T greatness

  • Thumbs Up If Vsauce Brought You Here :D

  • Why i cant fall like this?

  • Whats with the dramatic music? lol

  • we'd probably see it better if his camera had a better quality from far away.

  • @xXEastJesusNoWhereXx Gee, ya think?

  • @DisturbeD6699 I was being sarcastic... but okay...

  • Who is the elder gentleman, some famous physicist?

  • people that thought it wasn't going to remain still are idiots.

  • If i hang in a rubber string and let it go would i levitate for some milliseconds?

  • Some people are just like slinkys, they have no use, but you laugh when that fall down stairs.

  • Do it in space!

  • @vasko002 send it to spacelab !

  • does this mean that the upper end of the slinky accererates at a rate of 2G?? plz answer

  • @961kgb No I believe it accelerates at a rate of 3RX

  • i hope when im that old i still get to play with a slinky, living the dream

  • That's not a slinky! This is a slinky.

  • That is one BIG slinky.

    Also, Vsauce brought me here.

  • sydney uni physics building !

  • Comment removed

  • 2:12 Pigeons made it EPIC

  • So wait... then logically, if the slinky were long enough, you would have time to be standing under the slinky with it only a scant few inches above your head, and still be able to walk out of the way after the top end was dropped, without it touching your head. That is just a pile of insanity.

  • Slinky Top: JARONIMO!!!

    Slinky Bottom: Screw gravity! :D

    *Collision*

Slinky top and bottom: ARRGHHHH!!!! D:

  • What would happen if you tie a small parachute to the top of the slinky?

  • you got yourself a new subscriber :)

  • It's so freaky how it just floats there.....

  • AT 0:28 did he say fuck?

  • @TheJustinluther i bet that's exactly what Derek was thinking on his way to the ground to film it lol

  • So if I have a massive slinky and sit on it at the bottom of the tallest building in the world and someone lets go, I would technically be floating for a few seconds or do I just fall ?

  • @OwenMilloy you would be floating...

  • Ok, this is amazing, but where do I get a super sized slinky?

  • SCIENCE!

  • HAX! D:<

  • well i'll be dammed

  • SUPERSIZED SLOW-MO SLINKY DROP FROM A CHOPPA...GO!

  • So if the slinky was 1km high then would the bottom of it hover?

  • Now untangle it.

  • Top of the slinky: Here I come!

Bottom of slinky: HEY WAIT UP!

  • pic's or didn't happen

  • @sonofabirch Who needs pictures when you have video?

  • @sonofabirch You saw many many many pics

  • Please send this to the experiment in space contest youtube is having... how do slinkys work... IN SPACE

  • @timmyRAGEtrooper SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACEEEEEEEEE!!!!

  • @timmyRAGEtrooper We were shown a video showing that in my physics class! They pretty much do nothing. Sorry for letting you down. :P

  • @MooCowMilkshakes well thats a downer

  • Comment removed

  • the top even comes faster to the ground than the bottom :D thats awesome

  • i have a long slinky...

  • And leanback is over:(

  • the force normal and the gravity are equal to eachother

  • Vsauce brought me here :D

  • @xXpurplenurple007Xx No he did not. He brought you to another video, where YOU clicked the link to this video.. therefore, you brought youself to this video... lol

  • erectile dysfunction

  • this woundlt happen with a 2 ringed slinky :D

  • Slinky is the answer to levitating!!!!

  • :35 and not a single fuck was given that day

  • my slinkies always got tangled so i stopped buying them! stupid slinky!

  • And now with a slinky that's not made out of metal.

  • The slinky was MADE FOR SCIENCE!!

  • I WILL SUB NOW

  • take that youtube!

  • soo epic with the deafs flying away on the right at 2:10

  • As always, educational and entertaining, but the greater question is where can I get an I (heart) Ve t-shirt!

  • YAY PHYSICS! I emailed this to my old Physics professor and apparently he uses it in class :D

  • 69 videos

  • Comment removed

  • I still don't get it? Can you explain again but in a way very dumb people can understand?

    :) thanks

  • @MrEdufication The side of the slinky we call the bottom, IS falling down when he lets go of it, if you think of the slinky as a solid object that has been dropped and is falling to earth because of gravity. However, while it is falling, the two ends are being sucked into a compressed shaped like a stack because a slinky is a spring, and it's ends want to be closer together (being drawn closer together by the tension of the spring,) It only opticaly appears that it's "bottom" end is suspended.

  • Science, you so crazy!

  • that would be a bitch to get the tangled rings out of that o.o

  • 2:24, its hovering :O

  • Sydneyuni Physics building :P what else

  • 0:36 fishing for buzzards

  • 2:14! FUCK YEAH PIGEONS!!!

  • I knew it wouldn't Change. The only reason why it swirls is because of air interference.

  • SCIENCE

  • "We've learned alot about slinkys" sounds classy

  • When the top of the slinky meets the bottom of the slinky the result is random. Is this an example of Chaos in the system? If so I cant think of any extra degrees of freedom than when you dropped the shorter slinky on the lawns in a previous video.

  • Slinkies on boobs

  • Slink-ception.

  • 2:13 Birds at the top right flew away just as he dropped the slinky.

  • Wow I didn't think of the bottom as "falling" up before, but it kind of makes sense! Like if you did this on a flat table, but instead of slapping one end like in the video, you pulled on both ends and let go simultaneously - that would be just like the vertical drop (the spring is initially extended and at the moment of release both ends are free). The COM wouldn't move in the horizontal case, but both ends move towards the centre. So is the slinky really just falling and the bottom moving up?

  • @clementcoolguy No, the bottom of the slinky is stationary until the top falls down and reaches the base, then the entire slinky falls due to gravity.

  • @clementcoolguy Just think of it as each molecule of the slinky hanging from the one above it. When you let go, all molecules but the top one are still hanging from the molecule above it. First the top one drops, then the next, then the next, until the shockwave reaches the end of the slinky.

It's the same for solid object, but the shockwave travels much faster in a metal pole than a slinky.

  • @amandarandom89 I like this - well said. (the slinky is made of metal so I would say 'atom' rather than molecule)

  • nice watch

  • That's not a slinky.... THIS is a slinky. (in an Australian accent)

As an American, this makes me think of Crocodile Dundee.

  • @MrRocketsmoke I think they were going for that effect. ;)

  • @Eldeeff

    I'm American... I'm slow

  • @MrRocketsmoke Haha. I'm Australian, so it was a good chuckle.

  • @MrRocketsmoke I think that joke was intentional.

  • you have an american accent do you live in the UK though

  • @andrew14566 Australia.

  • amaizing you hit 600,000+ views in the slinky video :D

  • The moment I saw the other slinky drop, I wanted to see a bigger slinky drop.

  • Derek where's my t shirt?

  • 02:15 epic flying birds

  • wow, you did it!

  • dude, i just love veritasium... you guys are awsome =D

  • slinkys FTW :D

  • Imagine if that got tangled....

  • maybe the bottom part of the slinky is shooting up to meet the middle, while falling so it seems to be remaining still, while the top of the slinky is shooting down to meet the middle, while also falling so it seems to be moving faster

  • nice job derek :)

  • more slinky!

  • great video!

  • I love these! thanks

  • But will it blend?

  • I want a t-shirt!

  • glad to see another vid from you guys, you should upload more! :)

  • If slinky were a synonym to penis...

  • birds flying ftw @2:14

  • Amazing XD

  • How would this act at absolute zero? Since there are no compression waves, would the bottom move instantaneously? which would mean that it's moving faster than the speed of light.....

  • I bet this wouldn't happen with a 1000 ft slinky....

  • @SportsMusicGamesLife

    why not?

  • @SportsMusicGamesLife

    it will. it's physics.

  • @mrgata83 It's called. A joke.

  • @mrgata83 It was a joke. To get them to test out a 1000ft slinky.

  • @SportsMusicGamesLife I bet it wouldn't happen for a human slinky

  • @SportsMusicGamesLife im pretty sure it would but id love to see a bigger slinky :D

  • @sim09678 Same here =P

  • @SportsMusicGamesLife it actually will

  • Comment removed

  • @SportsMusicGamesLife lol, yes it would :P

  • @SportsMusicGamesLife Yes it would! The end only starts to fall once the wave propagating through the slinky has had time to reach the bottom (ie the top has fallen to meet the bottom). This property will be present regardless of the length.

  • @Ajihood Ya i figured as much, but to be honest buddy, i just wanna see a 1000 ft slinky... XD

  • @SportsMusicGamesLife that will have to passed to the mythbusters

  • @SportsMusicGamesLife Challenge Accepted.

  • @SportsMusicGamesLife good luck with finding one like that

  • @SportsMusicGamesLife I downvoted but then realized what you did there. If only...

  • @SeveredBanana Lol =P
