Hmm, lets get a really, really big slinky, attach a man at the lower end, and the top end on top of, let's say, the empire state building. Let the man hoover 1m above the pavement, and let go of the slinky! (Of course let's not mind the guy getting the slinky in the head)
@busterbox not entirely true, the person will fall once the tension from the cord is released. the energy wave will travel down the cord and they fall... but cord is not like a slinky, the slinky is a super long wire twisted into a spring so the energy travels down it differently. the rope will happen a lot faster
Could be a trap in one of the cube-movies. First the guy doesnt really understand whats going on and looks up in amazement, and then gets shredded into tiny slices by a highspeed slinky.
So wait... then logically, if the slinky were long enough, you would have time to be standing under the slinky with it only a scant few inches above your head, and still be able to walk out of the way after the top end was dropped, without it touching your head. That is just a pile of insanity.
So if I have a massive slinky and sit on it at the bottom of the tallest building in the world and someone lets go, I would technically be floating for a few seconds or do I just fall ?
@xXpurplenurple007Xx No he did not. He brought you to another video, where YOU clicked the link to this video.. therefore, you brought youself to this video... lol
@MrEdufication The side of the slinky we call the bottom, IS falling down when he lets go of it, if you think of the slinky as a solid object that has been dropped and is falling to earth because of gravity. However, while it is falling, the two ends are being sucked into a compressed shaped like a stack because a slinky is a spring, and it's ends want to be closer together (being drawn closer together by the tension of the spring,) It only opticaly appears that it's "bottom" end is suspended.
When the top of the slinky meets the bottom of the slinky the result is random. Is this an example of Chaos in the system? If so I cant think of any extra degrees of freedom than when you dropped the shorter slinky on the lawns in a previous video.
Wow I didn't think of the bottom as "falling" up before, but it kind of makes sense! Like if you did this on a flat table, but instead of slapping one end like in the video, you pulled on both ends and let go simultaneously - that would be just like the vertical drop (the spring is initially extended and at the moment of release both ends are free). The COM wouldn't move in the horizontal case, but both ends move towards the centre. So is the slinky really just falling and the bottom moving up?
@clementcoolguy No, the bottom of the slinky is stationary until the top falls down and reaches the base, then the entire slinky falls due to gravity.
@clementcoolguy Just think of it as each molecule of the slinky hanging from the one above it. When you let go, all molecules but the top one are still hanging from the molecule above it. First the top one drops, then the next, then the next, until the shockwave reaches the end of the slinky.
It's the same for solid object, but the shockwave travels much faster in a metal pole than a slinky.
maybe the bottom part of the slinky is shooting up to meet the middle, while falling so it seems to be remaining still, while the top of the slinky is shooting down to meet the middle, while also falling so it seems to be moving faster
How would this act at absolute zero? Since there are no compression waves, would the bottom move instantaneously? which would mean that it's moving faster than the speed of light.....
@SportsMusicGamesLife Yes it would! The end only starts to fall once the wave propagating through the slinky has had time to reach the bottom (ie the top has fallen to meet the bottom). This property will be present regardless of the length.
