Hello . I use and work on A.T. 4 . When i choose “ Clone Stamp Tool “ , i see frames and video clip so faded and not as original . How can i solve this problem ?
@Se7enLe7eN Hugging or shaking hands is a bit more technically challenging. I think what i would do is have a double...so..clone 1 shakes doubles hand..then they switch places and shake again. You would want to use a static background and make sure you mask clone 2's back ground out so its using the static background..or clone ones background..
I have not done this mind you just how i think i would approch it (sorry for the delay..been busy with school stuff)

@mrgimpkid Currently using a window 7 machine. Intel core 2 duo e6850 with 4 gigs of ram and a nvidia 560 Ti...its not a power house but it gets the job done
@mrquintontheone The camera does not have to be still but it does need to be the same. That is if you pan you want to make sure that shot 2 is a repeate of shot 1. Depending on your imagination and tech skills this can be a bit hard. Easiest low tech way i can think of to do this would be mounting the camera on a wide train track and letting the engine pull it arround the track. You could probably do this for under $100 easily.

@DTxOctavariumx Great point there, although, I tend to like to have it as Photoshop layer as it allows me to go in and manipulate or mask various things easier than in after effects.

@Rand0mn3z lighting is always a problem when doing this effect and it is why movies generally do cloning effects in a studio where they can control the lighting. So...If your doing it outside try to pick a day that either has no clouds in the sky, or a day where its completely overcast. This will keep pesky clouds from changing the lighting. Second try to pick a time of day where the light is not changing much..like noon. OR..get some cheep lights from home depot, block out windows and go crazy
Hey, everytime I draw the mask, instead of showing the second image, the other side of the video is just pure black. the clips are lined up, I'm drawing the mask on the top layer... The mask is on add... What am I doing wrong?
@superstarben37 I did, it just switches the side which turns black. For example, the masked out part turns black... I invert it and the non-masked out part turns black, or vice a versa

Personally though i like to have a bit more control over my masks and layers and i find using a picture i can just pop it into photoshop and mask it there then bring it back into after effects for a really tight look. Also i have noticed that if you have three big video files your end result can be rather large..
@legosareus If i have not answered this already..the green cross hairs mean you have a unlicensed aftereffects plugin installed. The cross hair is their way of saying you can use the program but if you dont want the cross hairs you need to pay..
@dmanyanksfan Yes you can. Essentially you would be making what they called a traveling matte. This was a common effect in the 1940's before the advent of actual camera chroma key...Ie green screen and blue screen. The key here is to do a really good job on your masking job or the effect will not look really good.
Honestly though if your going to be doing this a lot i would suggest you save time and money by getting a green screen and lights.

The idea on this (watch the masking video) is that your background= the background without the tripod. You mask out the tripod and the background shows through. This is a frustrating idea at first and fowled me up the first time too. Tell me how it works out and if it does not ill do what i can to help

@WTVBqdemon Yep..that will happen. Let me explain..Your first layer is the mask that gets rid of your tripod/object. Cutting it out with the mask tool with make it turn black so you have to inverse or use a subtraction mask instead of an additive mask.
Now you need to place objects on the next layer under your mask..So mask is top layer..other object is second layer. This should fix your issue, if not write something here and ill try to help yeh :)
@spark21ful Wish i had time. However the effect could be done just the same as the tripod holding the glass. In this case though the tripod is you. Just use the background image to mask yourself out of thepicture. I would also try not to grip anything your holding because it will mean you have to mask your hand out..which could get tricky.
Hey Helish can you tell me how would you go about syncing up like dialogue. Like how would be able to tell when clone B is supposed to speak to clone A so you can time it accordingly. Like do you have earbuds, guess, or is there another method?
@SoraNashimi good question. There are a few ways i could think of. The first thing i would try would be having a off camera friend speaking the opposite lines..that is they would speak the lines for the opposite clone when one clone was talking. This would ensure a more natural dialog. Then it would just be a matter syncing up the two dialogs.
You could also have a recording of the first clone you listen to...play that dialog back and have clone a respond to it. Just two quick ideas though
@wesuckbadly This is a harder effect but still doable if you have the set up. Essentially you do the same thing i did but you make sure for each pan (camera movement) that the camera is in the same position at the same time. Do your first pan with nothing..second with your first clone..third with your second clone..
if you can..watch the special features on charlie and the chocolate factory as they did the very same effect with a motion control rig.
@SouhaiLSnake Layer1.psd is a background layer with no actors or props in the shot. In the case of this video its without me in the shot or the tripod. You use the layer to make things disappear by essentially masking the item out. To create this layer you need to (in AE) go to the frame you want to be your background..then go up to composition..and down to save frame as..i save it as a psd which is a photoshop file.
@Stephiefulable Yes it should work with every adobe after effects software. Some of the buttons might be in different places mind you but the key concept is the same across the board.
i just got cs4 and i dont know how to use it. lmfao, how do i save the file? lmfao, i know it sounds stupid but how do i save the end project so i can put it on after effects? because when i put the files on ae, it is just seperate layers, is there like a flatten button like in photoshop? so confused...
@PhilliFlippy After effects is a bit different. You import your video and images and then you have to put those videos and images into the time line area. This way you are never touching the source files at all. Think of it this way...you have your file space and then your work place..your work place is at the bottom and labeled timeline..this is where you layer your effects and fun stuff.

@FostThenLound I acted through both parts. First i filmed the background with no tripod..then put it in place..then acted left then right..If you can replicate the exact lighting and camera angle though you don't really need to do that. A good example of this technique on the big screen is the new charlie and the chocolate factory movie. if you cant get a hold of the special features..watch it..Each umpa-loompa has been cloned using this technique..
Nice toot man. But one question. I have a project of a freefalling dog. It goes about 15 secs and moving each anchor point is difficult. Is there anyway to lock the mask to the layer that is in 3D space?
@LynchTheGrynch Unfortunately the answer is yes..and it involves masking each frame. The process i believe is called rotoscoping and even the big movie company's like lucas arts have to do it. Now the nice thing is after effects is good enough that you don't have to do every frame. That is, if you mask frame 1 and 32 the program will try to move the mask accordingly. The more points you make the better the mask though..
@helishorn Appreciate the feedback, even though you are bit to late since I finished that project. What I ended up doing is using atransparent PNG file and some camera tricks. A bit easier.

You can set the mask to add or subtract. if you set it to subtract then it will indeed go black. Think of it as taking away only that information.
The trick i use here is having a background layer that does not contain the tripod. When you subtract the tripod you will see the background layer. Its mearly visual trickery and allows you to still interact with the tripod..or whatever you have set up there..
Luckily i have made a quick tutorial on how to do that very effect. Look at my profile and my videos..should have 6 various basic effects for your telephoning fun.
Yes you can get after effects for the mac. Should be about the same as it is on the PC which is somewhere between 600 and 1000 bucks. If your a student its alot cheeper (the 1000 version comes with more programs). Another option for the mac is final cut studio or Pro..its a good solid program as well

Well you can use a program such as premier, vegas, windows movie maker, Imovie..etc..to join them. These would be your best options. You could also join them in after effects..this however is not what i would recommend..
Heres why. After effects is primarily used to add effect to short clips of a movie so its power does not really lie in joining videos..although it can..its just not the best tool for the job
I take a shot of the area without anything...then in after effects i go to the spot..somewhere in the edit area there is a command for saving the frame to a file (dont have it installed at the moment after a format)..save it to a psd file and import that back into after effects..bada boom bada bing

you may have a problem with animating your mask or lining up video. I try to do all my video editing in premier and bring it over to after effects for just adding effects
Im going to guess that this is 2 problems. One you might have your task pane video order wrong. In this case make sure the mask is on top and the other videos are below it. Second you may have the eyeball on your other videos turned off (dont laugh, i have done this).

Yes you will beable to do all the cloning you want with only after effect. Nero 9 and roxio should allow you to make a nice little dvd of your stuff as well
Humm..Just got done reading 'How to make friends and influence people' i see. Usually i would just delete such flagrant half witted attempts to inflame me or the good people who were able to figure this effect out from this tutorial. But its Xmas and im nice.
Hand off= Clone A puts bottle on tripod and clone B takes it from the tripod. You then edit the tripod out as per the instructions presented in the above video.

When ever i add a effect i get these green crosshairs and those crosshairs cover the entire screen and i cant do anything about them D:

Think of it this way...you have your file space and then your work place..your work place is at the bottom and labeled timeline..this is where you layer your effects and fun stuff.

@helishorn i guess. T_T i bought premiere and after effects, but i guess i just have to play around with it.lol. i thought it would be like photoshop where i can just "flatten" the layers and just create the scene. but ill get it sooner or later ^_^

@FostThenLound I acted through both parts. First i filmed the background with no tripod..then put it in place..then acted left then right..If you can replicate the exact lighting and camera angle though you don't really need to do that. A good example of this technique on the big screen is the new charlie and the chocolate factory movie. if you cant get a hold of the special features..watch it..Each umpa-loompa has been cloned using this technique..

Nice toot man. But one question. I have a project of a freefalling dog. It goes about 15 secs and moving each anchor point is difficult. Is there anyway to lock the mask to the layer that is in 3D space?

@LynchTheGrynch Unfortunately the answer is yes..and it involves masking each frame. The process i believe is called rotoscoping and even the big movie company's like lucas arts have to do it. Now the nice thing is after effects is good enough that you don't have to do every frame. That is, if you mask frame 1 and 32 the program will try to move the mask accordingly. The more points you make the better the mask though..

@helishorn Appreciate the feedback, even though you are bit to late since I finished that project. What I ended up doing is using atransparent PNG file and some camera tricks. A bit easier.

You can set the mask to add or subtract. if you set it to subtract then it will indeed go black. Think of it as taking away only that information.
The trick i use here is having a background layer that does not contain the tripod. When you subtract the tripod you will see the background layer. Its mearly visual trickery and allows you to still interact with the tripod..or whatever you have set up there..

Yes AE is on mac - it cost some where in the ball park of € 900 ($1200) - roughly. You can download a trial version of 30 days at Adobes website.

Yes you can get after effects for the mac. Should be about the same as it is on the PC which is somewhere between 600 and 1000 bucks. If your a student its alot cheeper (the 1000 version comes with more programs). Another option for the mac is final cut studio or Pro..its a good solid program as well

Hi could you explain why I get a green line in the timeline window - I think it has to do with the rendering..but it only has a capacity of 15 seconds..which smoothes out the video clip for that time..how can I make this green line stay for longer duration..say 5 mins etc?? Thanks for any help..

Well you can use a program such as premier, vegas, windows movie maker, Imovie..etc..to join them. These would be your best options. You could also join them in after effects..this however is not what i would recommend..
Heres why. After effects is primarily used to add effect to short clips of a movie so its power does not really lie in joining videos..although it can..its just not the best tool for the job

I take a shot of the area without anything...then in after effects i go to the spot..somewhere in the edit area there is a command for saving the frame to a file (dont have it installed at the moment after a format)..save it to a psd file and import that back into after effects..bada boom bada bing

you may have a problem with animating your mask or lining up video. I try to do all my video editing in premier and bring it over to after effects for just adding effects

Im going to guess that this is 2 problems. One you might have your task pane video order wrong. In this case make sure the mask is on top and the other videos are below it. Second you may have the eyeball on your other videos turned off (dont laugh, i have done this).
those would be my first two things to check

Humm..Just got done reading 'How to make friends and influence people' i see. Usually i would just delete such flagrant half witted attempts to inflame me or the good people who were able to figure this effect out from this tutorial. But its Xmas and im nice.
Hand off= Clone A puts bottle on tripod and clone B takes it from the tripod. You then edit the tripod out as per the instructions presented in the above video.
