It's a little perplexing, but I don't think it's cheating (misusing the physics engine). I think it just gives a quick and hard upward jerk to its front end when it touches the ground, and that's just enough to keep it from tipping all the way forward before the next kick. That back end is pretty big, so it can muster a lot of torque, and also provide a counterbalance.
