We did it in school. And Yes i'm sorry I couldn't keep it on any longer, I had to turn it off because my teacher nearly noticed my phone and we aren't allowed to use them in school, after the vid finishes lots of sparks flew all over like a firework and the cieling was ruined.
All of the alkali metals, Sodium, potassium, rubidium, lithium, and francium react with water in similar ways. All very dangerous, but cool none the less.
It is illegal to have these chemicals in schools where I live. It's ridiculous.
And now we're at at.. Why state it as "ilegal" Because it's not. It's not ilegal to put rubidium in water, it's just a chemistry experiment. Do you think it would sound cooler that way :S
The "illegal" part most likely comes from the fact that you can't have a lot of chemicals/elements/etc. over in the US without special permits. I know here, in New York, high schools aren't even allowed to have potassium anymore.
There's a difrence between you and schools.. the potassium is because some teachers gets hurt every year and sometimes hurt the students too. For you to have, it's perfectly legal. also rubidium! there's nothing ilegal in having and trowing it in water. If you have "small" ammounts you don't need any permit. you need alot before you will need a permit. and let me correct you... ALL elements is easily accesable , only synthetic and some radioactives can be hard to get.
Hi... If this really is rubidium you have balls of steel. To put lithium on a paper and put it in water is... dangerous. It explodes amidiatly on contact with water. Allthough... It looks very strange that the flame/explosion color is so brightly yellow. THAT INDICATES SODIUM! also.. the metal ignites before exploding. that's not typical for rubidium. Please add another video that show full reaction, or at least the full of this video. Let us see the explosion. :)
It is, the thing you can see is a bowl of water, it takes so long to explode because we had to put the rubidium on a paper tissue because it would explode before we could get away. Also there may be a bit of oil on it because we had to keep it in a jar of oil incase it would get in contact with any water which as you can see.. is very dangerous.
is it Rb with water or Na with water??

blow the teachers office up

You know that to blow up a small office would require you to buy potassium in bulk...?

Sodium doesn't react that violently compared to Rb...
