Hampson is pushing the piece out the whole time...consequently, his pitch wanders, his forte is just yelling, and his vibrato is noticeably wide. Very disappointed. I can't imagine him carrying very well in the house. His voice is very wooden and dry.
@yanreurriek You must know better than all the general managers/conductors who hire him all over the world. Have you seen his schedule lately? When was the last time YOU were on stage (and where)?
...and on the top of everything singers are so beautiful . They are so light .. are flying like butterflies in the flowing garden ... Physic beauty weights a lot in opera, especially nowadays because it opens direct channel for beautiful music to materialize and make strong impact on our (viewers) subconscious first of all. Unique solution of the opera. Verdi would be proud of the time's thread in this case.
Beautiful singers. Perfect acting. We'll realize what what was perfect here after December 2012. Most people's mind is not flexible enough to mirror simple things multiplied by the time and epoch. People screamed on first "Carmen" (s) (terrible, les idiots, la honte, en dégoûtant ) and then... Bravo.. Bravo. Some comments are simply unpleasant
Of cause, as an every normal person I do NOT believe in that. It's just a metaphor to underline that many people just simply are not able to have their own opinion
(and so on....) It's why I have mentioned that maybe after "that due date" we will ...
I personally find it bad because this is a verismo piece, and a "concept" set doesn't match it at all. It goes completely against the style of the music and era. It shows a lack of research.
@Jaydoggy531 mmm but verismo is characterized for the realistic treatment to daily CONTEMPORARY life, this minimalistic concept was very well suited, but that's just my opinion
Quite true, but when there are other conceptual ideas here that go beyond verismo and instead interpretive, and that is against what Verdi and Piave wanted. I have no problem with minimalist or newer stagings but there's a problem when direction goes against the very clear intentions of the writers: In this case Verdi and Piave insisted on a realistic setting and had to fight to finally get it.
In my opinion he's really not suited for this role... or any other role, for that matter... well, perhaps some lieder... he sings with his strange colorless voice and completely ruins this wonderful aria. In the second verse he also seems unnecessarily angry... and when he goes on the piano, he loose what little color he has... I never understood why he became a star!
@seektheforce What I mean is the "quality of sound" in his voice. Some people have a darker, richer sound. Others, like Hampson, have a sound deprived of richness that reminds me of a shout (when he's singing forte. When he sings piano, it's almost always in falsetto...) anyway, I find him out of style and overly mannered. By that is my personal taste...
Thomas Hampson, the worst Germont I've ever heard! He is more a tenor than a baritone. Thin, bright, open high notes when they would normally be dark and covered by a real baritone.
I heard Hampson will be singing Scarpia soon... What a comedy that's going to be!! Just like when he sang Verdi's Macbeth!!
As for Villazon, well we all know he is a quack. Shoes off the sofa, you loser!!
So light to play an older man who should sound more mature--- he is a lyric Baritone. Actually Maerrill did it well but his lyric was darker, still yeas Warren, Milnes , Bastianini, Gobbi, Bruson sounded more the father. Hampson is a fine singer of course.
This is very dissapointing. No smooth melody, strained notes and singing without any sentiment whatsoever! Poor. I'm really not looking forward to his ROH engagement next year unless he has considerably improved!
I hope the audition went well! My personal favourites are Leo Nucci, Ettore Battastini and Dmitri Hvorostovsky. I can't give you any help though as i'm not a singer! It's a beautiful aria.
It may be too late, but you should go over the aria with an assistant conductor from the Met. They have their special ways and you should know them.
As far as ideas for singing the aria see Tito Gobbi, Fischer Dieskau, Hvorostovsky and Lawrence Tibett. But remember that it has to be presented in current style.

Villazon tries to imitate Domingo a lot.probably this is part of the reason he is having troubles now. Domingo sang gloriously in a way that would have destroyed other throats. Hampson sings extremely well, but I don't think his voice is best suited for Verdi baritone. He sings the top notes open like a tenor would, not turned like a baritone. He probably could've been a good tenor, but perhaps his personality is more suited to baritone rep. Hard to fault him because he has made a sack of money!
1)Villazon forces his throat trying to sound bigger and darker.
2) Domingo did not destroyed his throath because... luck?. ALmost never had high notes because he wanted to sound bigger. MOre center, less high notes.
3) Hampson is not for a Verdi or any composer Bariton because is a Tenor.
You were right until you got to the part about Hampson being a tenor. You've got to be kidding. That's obviously the comfortable tessitura for him, and he sings this quite well, despite all of the Verdi know it all's who think that any baritone who sings Verdi needs to be Leonard Warren or Sherrill Milnes. It might not be as heavy as those two, but it's fantastic in its own right.
Unusual to have 2 tenors on stage for this scene. Oh, I'm sorry, did I miss something? How is Mr Hampson able to get engagements in the Verdi repertore? Has he ever sung this repertoire in Italy--presumably not, because they would boo him off the stage.....no richness, no real line, just a shallow, colourless sound. Yuk.
Brilliant production? You've got to be kidding. It is freaking bizarre. Any halfway decent interior decorator could do those sad minimalist sets. Spare me today's opera designers with their half-assed ideas. I want an opera set in 1853 to look like 1853.
Thank God!! I prefer the Met's more traditional Zeffirelli designed sets. I do love this aria though even if I believe that Hampson is not the best suited for it. Verdi always gave his older characters such beautiful arias.
There's just no emotion whatsoever in this Traviata. Lots of weird gestures that suggest it, but no real emotion. I think that's what really bothers me. Also, I love Hampson, but he's just not quite right for this role (right now, at least). Maybe in a few years...
