It was probably just an oversight made by a naive do-gooder who has never touched or heald a weapon before. But you are indeed correct, we (the United States) the M16 as do Israel, and I assume the UK. The AK-47 is standard in communist and "former" communist, and it is also a hit with terrorists and revolutionary movements because it was designed for cheap mas production. Soviet tanks and MIG jets were too.
