Stupid Leeds City Council rebuilt (or should that be f***** up) Eastgate in the late 80's by narrowing the road as much as they could. If you look at photos from the 70's or even earlier you'll see it's a lot wider. Strange then that we now have more traffic! There's just no common sense in this world!
wow, some right twat motorists here taring all cyclists with the same brush as the ones who run red lights with oncoming traffic, i'm a cyclist myself but not once have i disobeyed road signs and the such, i use the correct lanes and i always check for cars, the last time i nearly got hit i admit was partly my fault as i had no lights at 5:30 in the morning but the guy in the car saw me as i was passing his side road while i was on the main road yet still pulled out when i had right of way.

Bus drivers and taxi drivers in Leeds are on the very lowest rungs of human evolution ,although why anyone would wish to risk their life by biking in the town centre is beyond me. And I'd just like to point out, that the dumb cyclist who drove through a red light on Briggate/Boar Lane, deserved every bit of the pain he suffered when he was twatted into the railings by a pedestrian who was legally crossing the road on the traffic signals .Laptop 1 - plastic hat 0
Simlar thing happend to me on my mountain bike. Because he couldnt drive over my head, he said i cut him up. i got in front of him and laid my bike in the middle of the road and jumped in the bus and told him what a kunto he was.
Bad move on the bus drivers part. Silly and dangerous, but pleas dont use sweeping generalistions against all bus drivers. You must get fed up of hearing all cyclists are this and that so dont do the same to bus drivers. As one myself i am very considerate to cyclists.
I appreciate your point, the bus should have alllowed you more space. Now I wish someone would tell car drivers that the Highway Code says they must allow buses to pull out of bus stops.
@armours Car drivers should let buses out, I agree, but bus drivers are bastards for setting off when a car is committed and along the bus's flanks. It was not indicating when you went to pass & the twat of a driver decides to pull out AFTER you've started overtaking.
yep i,ll give u that was kinda bad but how many times do u drive right passed red lights mount the kerb and get in bus and car drivers way?. if i was to take my car and drive like ppl on bikes i would get done for joyrideing
The driving standards in west yorkshire generally are shit, but leeds is particularly shocking. I drive for First Leeds, and thankfully was not trained by them as the training is lacking. First do not have any professionalism at all, they do not provide a good service, they show no courtesy on the roads at all and I am not proud to work for them. my advice boycott us and force them to listen, I personally hope they go bust!
I dont need to watch the video again, I have formed my opinion, and I dont accept what you are stating, you shouldn't be even allowed topush a supermarket trolley around Asda, let alone be on the roads.

What I do for a living has Jack Shit to do with you, you are danger to other road users, just deal with it, they are from my own observations, and I have nothing to do with this incident.
@23Atlantean Wow - touched a nerve there! You are a bus driver and I claim my five pounds. Watch the video again; watch the position of the bus; watch my position. Then promise us all never to drive a large vehicle ever again with people in it.
@leedscyclist LeedsCyclist; Do you have a road licence or insurance or pay road tax? If you knocked someone down what would happen to you - would you loose your job? If you rode illegally (on pavements, across zebra crossings when lights are red, or through many red lights - as many cyclists do) would you go to court? Do you have mirrors to check behind you @junctions like this one? Were U indictaing 2turn left onto the Headrow &if not why didn't you put out your right arm to say keeping on?
@23Atlantean Were you the driver? lol... I back leedscyclist on this all the way.. My dads a London bus diver and has been for 33 years.. Not once has he had a collision with another road user.. that's because he's careful and doesn't rush.. no matter how of schedule he is!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Look at the position you are before you approached the roundabout, not near the kerb, the highway code states that you indicate when leaving a roundabout that you signal to do this, when the bus passes you it has left and has no reason to have its indicator on.
You as are normal cyclists that use public roads are a clown, with no road sense, you must have serious problems socially to post it on here.
@23Atlantean You have shown that you know nothing about road positioning. Every organisation from the police to the CTC to the Institute of Advanced Motorists advocates cycling around a metre from the kerb for increased visibility and safety.
Also, if you look at around 10 seconds in, you'll see that I'm in a lane that is for left turn or straight on and the bus is in a lane for straight on only, yet it turns left. Who's is in the wrong there? Are you a bus driver?
@leedscyclist when your driving a HGV or PSV its not always possible to use designated lanes sometimes you need the other side of the road to make a turn, however i will say this is very poor judgement by the bus driver
@23Atlantean i know, the way he rides a bike you would think it was him driving the bus, he doesn't even ride is bike safely for not only his sake but for other road users,on all his videos you can clearly see that he rides almost in the middle of the road.. hes bloody losers.
@23Atlantean you must have serious mental problems to not be able to see what the bus driver did wrong here. The driver should have waited to over take AFTER going completely through the turn. Cyclists are supposed to stay 1 meter away from the curb, for safety. Try picking up a book on road safety and try riding you cycle on the roads, then maybe you'll understand our position. You could easily kill us.
@23Atlantean Mate you did that to him knowing he couldnt catch you while I know you wouldnt do it to me when Im riding because I would catch you and Im not a whimp, the driving of this bus is shit selfish and extremly dangerous but because your not in any danger you dont give a fuck.
Children ride bikes on the road not having driving experience and you are the kind of twat that kills them.
Your on thin ice mate either your gonna kill someone or someone is gonna drag you out your cab
Hmm - should have added. First Leeds customer service DO take cyclist complaints seriously.
Problem is that some of their drivers know perfectly well they can scare the .... out of a cyclist, and be off long before the cyclist can get their number.
No, not whining; just pointing out a simple fact of life cycling in Leeds.
Arriva, Coastliner, Harrogate & District, or Keighley and District bus drivers are CONSISTENTLY courteous and careful of cyclists. A public thank you, from this cyclist to those companies and their drivers.
However, First Leeds doesn't maintain anything like the same high standards of professionalism and training. Some (not all) of their drivers are dangerous, aggressive, ....... cowboys.
Edinburgh is pretty lucky at the moment, most services are run by Lothian Buses who seem very vulnerable road user aware. There's also a small number of First service and whilst the minority are terrible on the whole they're not too bad.
Clearly an inconsiderate driver who on this occasion showed little concern for a fellow road user. I'd write to the bus company and point out his lack of road sense. I'd also cycle a bit further out from the kerb. My experience is that while vehicle drivers will happily ignore the fact that they're squashing cyclists, they make damm sure they're not going to hit anything on their right.
Was on the bus the other day when a bus driver cut a cyclist up from turning. What did he do? Caught up with the bus and continuously banged the side of the bus with his lock haha.

your probably one of those "cyclists" who sit in the middle of the road, holding everyone up, because you have the right to be there, roads are for all vehicles, I have seen on countless occasions cyclists unaware of red lights and in general the highway code, so get off your bloody bike and get the bus.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
if you were cycling round a corner and i had a bus to get round aswell i'd have done the same. cyclist are a bunch of pains in the fucking arses, it's bad enough coming across one in a car. must be 10 times worse in a bus.
These days, many drivers cannot think for anyone around them. What happen if his family is on the bike. Still doing same thing?
I am sure that they will slow down or maybe even wait for the bike. It's too late if you hit the bike or kill somebody. I don't understand why many drivers cannot understand. Yeah, many people think that "it does not happen to me".
From the camera angle, there is no evidence to suggest you were squashed against the railings or had too little space. In addition to this, I would question your motivation for filming your journeys, what are you trying to achieve? Does it not distract you/make it more difficult to cycle with a camera on your head? And yes, I'm a bus driver, but also a car driver, moped rider and cyclist; I just don't like stereotypes.
Have a look again at the width of the road. I was indicating left and the bus driver turned in with me; there was no room for error if I had moved to the right or wobbled/fallen due to the usually poor surface of roads in Leeds. The camera makes no difference to how I cycle as it's on the side of my helmet. I'm a cyclist, driver, pedestrian too. I try not to stereotype but FirstBus in Leeds do not include cycle awareness; I have offered to take their drivers on a cycle ride through Leeds.
I would say regardless of whether you think LC had space, etc, the Highway code does say not to overtake near or through junctions (the RAB being a junction afterall).
You could also argue why not film, when many people dont beleive you until you show them the videos. Motivation is often to campaign and educate, and for insurance purposes, rarely anything else.
And I'm far from biased against bus drivers, I think on the whole they are far better than the average shown by car drivers. Enough that I've taken a letter of thanks and choco to several local bus garages on my route, they certainly earnt the compliment through their driving. Mind, they were rather flabbergasted.
no coz cyclists are never wrong... they don't hurt the enviroment, they don't cause accidents, they don't have any training... and thier kids are picked on at school... so theyre aaaaallllll good :-)
You really shouldn't say things like that when people can find out who you are and who you work for. Ten minutes of Googling and I feel I know you! Hope your interview with HR next week goes OK.
If you can get the date and time this happened, First can backdate their drivers and the driver can be suspended and possibly forced to retake his test. That is well pout of order. You could have been killed. Optare Solo's (which is what the bus is) are small and easy to maneuvor (however you spell it) so he/she has no excuse.
Well, there's no audio so at least he wasn't balancing a sound man and all his equipment on the pillion too...
...or maybe he had a small camera on his helmet like so many of us do, so when a car hits us we can sue the shit out of you rather than have the police respond "well, there were no witnesses so it is your word against theirs." They cost a few quid, and they're worth the investment.
Yes, I do, but I always let myself off on appeal because I produce the video evidence that shows I was actually stopped at the red light. Then I beat myself up in the cells before I get released, and then there's a dinosaur, and some surfing lap-dancers, and then I wake up.
It isn't a rule that cyclists ride like twats, just like it isn't a rule that all car drivers are incompetent (if you drive, I'm sure you've sworn at as many bad drivers as bad cyclists).
...on my bike was while I was waiting nicely at a red light - some tosser on a bike had decided to jump the light by squeezing between me and the cars at high speed. Shame I picked that moment to roll my bike six inches further from the pavement - his handle bars hit mine and as he was going full speed, he came off very nastily. The twat lay there bleeding as I rode off and my only helpful comment was "serves you right dickhead". A bad road user is a bad road user, bike, car or pedestrian.
Basicaly the road is for AUTOMOBILES that have paid registration and cyclists cause accidents by not using common sense. I rekon cyclists have a death wish sometimes.
Have a look at how vehicles are charged these days. Road Tax was abolished in 1936 (that's the year not the time). Vehicle Excise Duty is now based on emissions and my bike has zero emissions (except the day after a Guinness and curry session).
In the UK cyclist have a right to use a road (as do pedestrians, horses and horse drawn carriages). You can only drive a vehicle on a road if you have a licence. What "common sense" was leedscyclist not using?
Pulling out from the bus stop before the car passes is a common one.
LORRY DRIVER'S ARE THE WORST!
Only the other day we saw a 40 tonne sugar-beet laden truck pull out of a junction near our house ON HIS MOBILE!!! He wasn't paying any attention and i shuddered to think what he could do to a person or a whole family if he was to hit them.I didn't have time to get his number. If that guy saw you then why did he narrowly miss crushing you to death!?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The bus driver knows how to drive, there is no need to complain that's what wing mirrors are for. He would of hit you if you would of swerved but surely your not that dumb, If he would of hit you or your bike then you should be bothered plus you are being illegal filming it because it is a distraction.
And just how many red lights do you cyclists run? I work in the building opposite Greggs on Eastgate and the number of near misses I have had with cyclists ignoring reds on the pedestrian crossings between there and the main shopping areas beggars belief. Are you all colour blind or just plain ignorant?
Two years of commuting by bicycle into Leeds: Red lights run = 0; pavements cycled on = 0; cars I see illegally driving over the Headrow = at least 8 every evening (and that's in the few minutes I'm there).
Good for you, can you teach the majority please! Re cars, completley agree, there was a bloke sat in his car next to my bus stop, on his phone, on Eastgate causing chaos. Bus drivers should be allowed a free scrape on these guys!
My dad is a cyclist up stanningley road in leeds, hes saving money, not getting into debt with a car, not polluting and keep[ing fit, yet hes not alowed to go on the pavement when there are cars parked ALL up stanningley road because he might hit a pedestrian. he has almost been hit by double decker buses and lorries. its so irritating.

exscumse me who told you that illegal are you a police officer? look how can it be more of a danger riding on the path then it is on the road a cyclist dont weigh more then 12 stone a car wieghs 2 tone bus,s around 12 tone wot more of a danger getting hit by a person or getting hit by a bus you answer that riding on a path is not anymore dangerous then a granny scooter and granny scooter wighs alot more then a bike thums me down but ti shows how small your brain is and how easy it is!
I know it's illegal because I'm capable of reading The Highway Code. This document is required reading for motor-vehicle users in the UK and forms parts of the driving test.
Section 64
You MUST NOT cycle on a pavement.
[Laws HA 1835 sect 72 & R(S)A 1984, sect 129]
And there have been numerous studies on the relative dangers of cycling on the road versus off-road cycle paths, and the latter are more dangerous. Yes, this seems counter-intuitive, but it's also true.
You do realise that you're recommending that someone do something that's actually illegal, don't you? It's also slow, dangerous (yes, more dangerous than riding on the road) and inconvenient for all concerned.
Moan moan moan thats all you hear, people only notice what happens to them and dont notice what they do to other people. Some people need to get out more. Also Rule 163 only applies if there is room to make such a move, thanks to council planners everything made tight and narrow, these 'perfect world' rules are just not possible anymore.
Wow, he was *very* close - even if you were touching the kerb he would have been within a foot of you. He definitely needs to improve his driving before he kills someone, and sadly I doubt this will happen unless the Police or the bus company have a word with him.
All the driver need to do was hang back for a few seconds until it was safe to pass. Very bad driving and totally unacceptable IMO.
there is no way that bus could have been as close as it seems, looking at the size of tht junction and the buses position passiing the cyclist im thinking that 12" is quite the exageration, Yes it was a close overtake but by no means was it as close as is made out
Did he give the recommended space when overtaking? No.
Have a look at 0.15 on the vid and you'll see his front wheels are almost touching the double yellows. Was it 12", or 15", or just a mere 18" - that's still too damn close when you're on a bike.
its ok saying bus drivers dont drive with care, ive seen loads of cyclists who do not obey the laws of the road such as going through red lights, not singalling passing cars too close, thinking they dont have to stop at give way lines to junctions
you get both good and bad bus drivers and cyclists - i dont see what use posting vids like this does... maybe someone shud post some of bad cyclists too to give a fair side for both
True...and there is loads of vid's of poor cycling...filmed by none other than cyclists themselves...we get annoyed with stupid cyclists as well as stupid drivers...Posting vids like this helps to shame people, cyclists and drivers alike.

@armours Car drivers should let buses out, I agree, but bus drivers are bastards for setting off when a car is committed and along the bus's flanks. It was not indicating when you went to pass & the twat of a driver decides to pull out AFTER you've started overtaking.

Look at the position you are before you approached the roundabout, not near the kerb, the highway code states that you indicate when leaving a roundabout that you signal to do this, when the bus passes you it has left and has no reason to have its indicator on.
You as are normal cyclists that use public roads are a clown, with no road sense, you must have serious problems socially to post it on here.
23Atlantean 1 year ago
@23Atlantean You have shown that you know nothing about road positioning. Every organisation from the police to the CTC to the Institute of Advanced Motorists advocates cycling around a metre from the kerb for increased visibility and safety.
Also, if you look at around 10 seconds in, you'll see that I'm in a lane that is for left turn or straight on and the bus is in a lane for straight on only, yet it turns left. Who's is in the wrong there? Are you a bus driver?
leedscyclist 1 year ago 12
@leedscyclist And I learnt this the hard way :/
I was too close to the kerb, clipped it, and ended up with a concussion, hahahaha.

Shocker9 7 months ago
@leedscyclist when your driving a HGV or PSV its not always possible to use designated lanes sometimes you need the other side of the road to make a turn, however i will say this is very poor judgement by the bus driver
TridentTrucking 3 months ago
@23Atlantean i know, the way he rides a bike you would think it was him driving the bus, he doesn't even ride is bike safely for not only his sake but for other road users,on all his videos you can clearly see that he rides almost in the middle of the road.. hes bloody losers.
MrJascol 1 year ago
@23Atlantean you must have serious mental problems to not be able to see what the bus driver did wrong here. The driver should have waited to over take AFTER going completely through the turn. Cyclists are supposed to stay 1 meter away from the curb, for safety. Try picking up a book on road safety and try riding you cycle on the roads, then maybe you'll understand our position. You could easily kill us.

Some (not all) of their drivers are dangerous, aggressive, ....... cowboys.

Terrible driving.
Edinburgh is pretty lucky at the moment, most services are run by Lothian Buses who seem very vulnerable road user aware. There's also a small number of First service and whilst the minority are terrible on the whole they're not too bad.
HLaB75 1 year ago 3
Clearly an inconsiderate driver who on this occasion showed little concern for a fellow road user. I'd write to the bus company and point out his lack of road sense. I'd also cycle a bit further out from the kerb. My experience is that while vehicle drivers will happily ignore the fact that they're squashing cyclists, they make damm sure they're not going to hit anything on their right.

These days, many drivers cannot think for anyone around them. What happen if his family is on the bike. Still doing same thing?
I am sure that they will slow down or maybe even wait for the bike. It's too late if you hit the bike or kill somebody. I don't understand why many drivers cannot understand. Yeah, many people think that "it does not happen to me".
cleanupjapan 2 years ago 2
From the camera angle, there is no evidence to suggest you were squashed against the railings or had too little space. In addition to this, I would question your motivation for filming your journeys, what are you trying to achieve? Does it not distract you/make it more difficult to cycle with a camera on your head? And yes, I'm a bus driver, but also a car driver, moped rider and cyclist; I just don't like stereotypes.
DelBoy170190 2 years ago
Have a look again at the width of the road. I was indicating left and the bus driver turned in with me; there was no room for error if I had moved to the right or wobbled/fallen due to the usually poor surface of roads in Leeds. The camera makes no difference to how I cycle as it's on the side of my helmet. I'm a cyclist, driver, pedestrian too. I try not to stereotype but FirstBus in Leeds do not include cycle awareness; I have offered to take their drivers on a cycle ride through Leeds.

why should they?, you dont own the flaming road. why don't cyclists get tought 'motor vehicle' awareness.
fireamusmus 2 years ago
I would say regardless of whether you think LC had space, etc, the Highway code does say not to overtake near or through junctions (the RAB being a junction afterall).
You could also argue why not film, when many people dont beleive you until you show them the videos. Motivation is often to campaign and educate, and for insurance purposes, rarely anything else.
downfader2 2 years ago 3
Oh come on, that was a terrible overtake!!
And I'm far from biased against bus drivers, I think on the whole they are far better than the average shown by car drivers. Enough that I've taken a letter of thanks and choco to several local bus garages on my route, they certainly earnt the compliment through their driving. Mind, they were rather flabbergasted.

Long23 2 years ago 2
do ya use it to fine yourself when you cyclist go through red lights and on paths and wrong way down one way streets shall i go on.................
drovers5 2 years ago
Yes, I do, but I always let myself off on appeal because I produce the video evidence that shows I was actually stopped at the red light. Then I beat myself up in the cells before I get released, and then there's a dinosaur, and some surfing lap-dancers, and then I wake up.
It isn't a rule that cyclists ride like twats, just like it isn't a rule that all car drivers are incompetent (if you drive, I'm sure you've sworn at as many bad drivers as bad cyclists).
One of the crashes I had...
Long23 2 years ago
...on my bike was while I was waiting nicely at a red light - some tosser on a bike had decided to jump the light by squeezing between me and the cars at high speed.
Long23 2 years ago 3

The bus driver knows how to drive, there is no need to complain that's what wing mirrors are for. mattym1992 2 years ago
And just how many red lights do you cyclists run? I work in the building opposite Greggs on Eastgate and the number of near misses I have had with cyclists ignoring reds on the pedestrian crossings between there and the main shopping areas beggars belief. Are you all colour blind or just plain ignorant?
wilki31 3 years ago
Two years of commuting by bicycle into Leeds: Red lights run = 0; pavements cycled on = 0; cars I see illegally driving over the Headrow = at least 8 every evening (and that's in the few minutes I'm there).

melfiire 3 years ago

It's also slow, dangerous (yes, more dangerous than riding on the road) and inconvenient for all concerned.
gadgetmind 3 years ago
Moan moan moan thats all you hear, people only notice what happens to them and dont notice what they do to other people. Some people need to get out more. Also Rule 163 only applies if there is room to make such a move, thanks to council planners everything made tight and narrow, these 'perfect world' rules are just not possible anymore.
jammiebeasts 3 years ago
Eh? Where do you get the bit about rule 163 not applying on a narrow road? The Highway Code says no such thing - read it!
If it isn't safe to pass THEN DON'T PASS! Shaving a few seconds off your trip is not worth endagering the life of another road user.

I was on that bus!!! I took a picture of the driver for you; he was on his break... tcbook
tcbook 3 years ago
Wow, he was *very* close - even if you were touching the kerb he would have been within a foot of you. He definitely needs to improve his driving before he kills someone, and sadly I doubt this will happen unless the Police or the bus company have a word with him.
All the driver need to do was hang back for a few seconds until it was safe to pass. Very bad driving and totally unacceptable IMO.
gadgetmind 3 years ago 4
there is no way that bus could have been as close as it seems, looking at the size of tht junction and the buses position passiing the cyclist im thinking that 12" is quite the exageration, Yes it was a close overtake but by no means was it as close as is made out
crazybella11 3 years ago
So:
Was he in the correct lane? No.
Did he indicate? No.
Did he give the recommended space when overtaking? No.
Have a look at 0.15 on the vid and you'll see his front wheels are almost touching the double yellows. Was it 12", or 15", or just a mere 18" - that's still too damn close when you're on a bike.
leedscyclist 3 years ago
its ok saying bus drivers dont drive with care, ive seen loads of cyclists who do not obey the laws of the road such as going through red lights, not singalling passing cars too close, thinking they dont have to stop at give way lines to junctions
you get both good and bad bus drivers and cyclists - i dont see what use posting vids like this does... maybe someone shud post some of bad cyclists too to give a fair side for both
cafecremelad 3 years ago
True...and there is loads of vid's of poor cycling...filmed by none other than cyclists themselves...we get annoyed with stupid cyclists as well as stupid drivers...Posting vids like this helps to shame people, cyclists and drivers alike.
