Tires aren't cheap but they're not bad. these make great first quads: they're fast but not super fast, they're really fun, they're light, and they handle great! Also these are great quads to learn how to use a manual clutch; the clutch on them is very forgiving. On my Warrior and Raptor on the other hand, you gotta be really good at using a manual clutch.
yeah i bought it about 3 weeks ago now. when i went to the guys house it ran terrible so i got it for 400 and got it home and cleaned the carb and now it runs like a top.
someone called me with a 1987 trx250x it needs rear end bearings and front end bearings the left side cover was broken by the chain and it needs other work comes with extra parts and he wants 400 is that a good deal?

It sounds like it was really abused if all the bearings are bad AND the chain snapped and broke some plastic. At the very least whoever owned it never did like any maintenance. @PowerRider16 these honda 250's are known for trashing bearings!!! mine eats up rear bearings (due to the wear on the carrier from riding it with blown bearings) and my fronts are wobbly! otherwise i love the quads relialbe
I have the same quad. Bought it and it ran great. Then it got cold and couldn't start it for anything. Cleaned the air filter was problem solved! Owned mine for over 10 years now and still rockin' it.
my warrior header is a little bigger i bet which i like but my 400ex hasent had a stock exaust since ive had it so i cant really compare its got a full fmf :)
yeah that's what i thought too but the 250ex exhaust looks like that too and i'm guessing that's what it is cause wouldn't the 400ex's have a larger header pipe diameter? cause my yamaha moto-4 200 has about the same header pipe diameter as this did, but my yamaha warrior 350 has a much bigger header pipe so i'm guessing the 400ex would too
haha the seat is a little torn up but it looks nice. My friend has a 1985 250x and its nice. im not trying to be a dick or anything but my 2008 raptor 350 blows that in the dust. but i want a fourwheeler that cheap that i can rip around on.
yeah for manual clutches you gotta let go slowly and give it gas at the same time to move forward. i used to do the same thing on my friends DR-Z 125 (bike) and my KLX 140 dirt bike.
I sold this quad it just wasn't for me it couldn't wheelie good cause it had an extended swingarm and parts are usually expensive so i didn't have enough cash to make it as nice as i like my quads to be. working on it is ok until you gotta mess with the front fenders. my yamaha is nicer that way so i'm gonna buy a warrior and go back to yamaha quads. i did like the kick start, the suspension, and the light weight of this quad though

sounds like you popped into second, i have the exact same quad (year) helps if you dont give any throttle, if it has been modified for high compression you dont want to kick it as hard. when could you should slowly do one kick to loosten every thing up (broke my crank when it was -12 and hadnt been started since summer. parts on that are the same up to 91

you're right all it needs is the idol turned up, it runs good if you rev it a little but not when you just let it sit, it idols too low i'm adjusting that tomorrow

All atvs will smoke in winter but thats just white steam from the moisture in the exuast. This is clearly blue smoke from oil. Just lettin you know before it leads to more problems.
yeah i kinda figured it doesn't need new rings my moto-4 smokes exactly like that, same color and everything, but it doesn't smoke when it isn't winter. also it was a cold start on full choke so that has something to do with it too.
I know it looks bad because of the junk plastics and seat, but it actually runs great except for the idle issue. It's in good mechanical condition and the chassis is dirty but not very rusty. When I bought it, it came with a set of Pro Wedge's for the back and the complete stock rear end. The point is all the stuff I got is worth way more than $500.
think i should buy an 87 250x for 600 bux
it has new chain and new sprokets and its stock
it just needs new front tires. let me know if you think its good for a first quad

ok whatever. no the moto-4 does not have a chinese pipe it is the oem yamaha pipe with the end cut off and the baffles and spark arrestor taken out

You may need new piston rings because of the blue smoke out of the exaust. Thats usually what buring oil is caused by.
