If Lloyd Pettit were around the doing the Blackhawks on radio in the 2010 Finals, his call of the series would have ended with "A Shot, A Goal, AND A CUP!!!!".
The "original six" NHL teams each had a legendary play-by-play broadcaster: Pettit in Chicago, Foster Hewitt in Toronto, Danny Gallivan in Montreal, Bud Lynch in Detroit, Fred Cusick in Boston, and Marty Glickman in New York (Rangers).
I was a teenager in the 70's and all the Hawk home games were on the radio then. Nobody did hockey games like Lloyd Pettit, he had you on the edge of your seat the whole game. This tape brings back a lot of memories, and I would like to thank you very much. Another great announcer of that time was Dan Kelly of the St. Louis Blues, hockey of the 60's and early 70's to me were the most exciting. 'A shot and a GOAL' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To the person who made this video: Thank you very much for paying tribute to the greatest hockey announcer of all time, Lloyd Pettit. It is hard to believe he has passed away. I keep hearing "A shot and a goal" whenever I see a hockey game and know that no annoucer will ever be like him. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. To me Lloyd's name belongs right up there with Mikita and Hull. He was one of a kind. I will never forget him.
I HAVE TO CORRECT MYSELF... ALL THE GAMES WERE ON WGN AM 720...SORRY
WGN TV USE TO CARRY SOME OF THE ROAD GAMES.. I AM GETTING CHILLS WHEN HEARING THE NAMES LIKE STAPLETON, HULL, AND MAKITA. I DIDN'T HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT THE MOVIE STAR ERIC NESTERENKO.
EVERY YOUNG CHICAGO KID REMEMBERS LLYOD. HE DID THE LEAD OFF MAN CUB PREGAME SHOW.. NOW YOU KNOW ALL OF THIS IS GREAT NHL HISTORY.. "A SHOT AND A GOAL"! AND REMBER THERE WERE A LOT OF HIGHLIGHTS BECAUSE THE RADIO COVERAGE DID NOT START UNTIL AFTER THE FIRST PERIOD OF PLAY!!
@DIGTV58 I remember that! The games on WMAQ didn't start until 8:15. And then we got highlights during that intermission, no thanks to Arthur Wirtz, the one who let Bobby Hull get away. No, it was not Bill Wirtz who did that. He didn't have control of the Hawks at that point.
EVERY YOUNG CHICAGO KID REMEMBERS LLYOD. HE DID THE LEAD OFF MAN CUB PREGAME SHOW.. NOW YOU KNOW ALL OF THIS IS GREAT NHL HISTORY.. "A SHOT AND A GOAL"!
"A right from Magnuson! A right from Hextall! Another right from Magnuson! Another right from Hextall! They're turning each other into a bloody pulp! Another right from Magnuson! Another right from Hextall!..."
The kids on our street all played ice and street hockey, and when any of us scored, we all imitated Lloyd Pettit! Those were some great times... spent lots of nights listening to him with my tiny transistor radio pressed against my ear. Man goodness, was Chicago Stadium loud or what? WOW!
Thank you so much for making this. I grew up listening to Lloyd on A.M. radio. He was the best and I melted when I hurd this video. I don't whats better. The Chicago Blackhawks, The pipe organ or Lloyd Pettit. They all worked together on giving memories beyond believe. When I try to explain this to someone, I can't stop talking about being in the Chicago Stadium and or listen to Lloyd on the piece of crap radio. Thank you, Thank You and Thank you. A SHOT AND A GOAL.
I'm a diehard Red Wings fan, so, naturally, I hate the Blackhawks...but Lloyd Pettit was the best hockey announcer EVER! I grew up listening to Ned Martyn and Bud Lynch call Wings games and they made a great announcing team. I hadn't listened to Hawks games until I went to Northwestern. The first time I heard Lloyd Pettit was a revelation. He was so good it was better listening to him on the radio than it was watching the game on TV...We will never see his like again!
This man painted a canvas of images with his words announcing hockey. His trade mark "a shot...and a GOAL!" separates him from all other hockey announcers who usually use "he shoots....he SCORES!".
@fjgindy True. CBS made the play by play offer to Lloyd first, but Brickhouse, who was sports director for WGN then and his boss, turned CBS down. Dan Kelly ended up with the job from 1968 on, don't know who did it in 1967
@Staszu13 I believe Stu Nahan did the weekend games of the 1967 and 1968 Finals for CBS.
Dan Kelly became the voice of the St. Louis Blues for CBS-owned KMOX Radio in St. Louis in the 1968/69 season (I think he also did games of the St. Louis Football Cardinals for them at the time), and since he already was on the network payroll, he replaced Nahan.
Had the Blackhawks been on CBS-owned WBBM Radio, Lloyd Pettit would've gotten the job.
@altfactor Kelly was the Football Cardinals voice but I'm not sure exactly when. Wasn't he on Hockey Night in Canada before getting the gig in St. Louis? Remember, HNIC was on the radio in those days too, I seem to remember games on Sunday nights. I lived near Lake Erie and at night I picked up the CBC station out of Toronto "clear as a bell" in those days. Also got Ch. 9 from Windsor when conditions were right. They started late just like the Hawks on radio due to the Red Wings.
@fjgindy dear fu or fj or whatever the hell it is: r u insane?? what could brickhouse have possibly had to do with it?? brickhouse wanted no part of hockey, he didnt know hockey and was deligthed with pettit's work. blame it all on wirtz. period. end of discussion. back up what u r saying b4 u print this kinda shit.
Wonderful! Thank you. Grew up on the southwest side in the late 50's and early 60's . Always been a Hawks fan and grew up with Lloyd Pettit, Brickhouse, Vince Lloyd etc. Saw a number of Hawks games at the old Chicago Stadium. Though I have lived in the state of PA for almost 30 years, to this day it is always "a shot and a goal" in my mind when the Hawks score! Best hockey announcer I have ever heard! Thanks again for these great memories.
Oh wow. Thank you very much for this addition. He was my idol as a broadcaster and a primary reason why In went into that business for more than 30 years. I tremember so many nights listening on WMAQ 670. May he rest, with our thanks and gratitude.
Loved this ! I grew up in the north 'burbs of St. Louis. Before the 1967 expansion, used to see the St. Louis Braves, a Hawk farm club, at the old StL Arena. After expansion and the Blues, I was so hockey mad, that after Blues games, I'd get WMAQ and listen to Hawks games and hear Lloyd Pettit extol the virtues of the restaurant Su Casa on Ontario ! Years later I moved up to Naperville, and got season tix to Chicago Stadium, and must admit, became a convert to Blackhawk Nation !
Thank you so much, I was 'nt born yet, but now it's easy to imagen beeing there. And part dedicated to the MPH line, Pit Martin was my fathers older brother. Thank you..
Thank you for posting this, what memories, the most exciting radio announcer ever!! The great old Chicago stadium. This tape brought tears to my eyes.Thank you
The Golden Age of hockey to go along with the Golden Jet! I never thought I'd ever hear Lloyd Petit's voice again. Thank you to whomever has done this!
@Yestrooper1 I was happy to find this on youtube. In the 50's we had season tickets and my dad ran a bar on West Madison St where the players used to stop after the games and as a kid they use to leave me pucks and sticks. I still have the Blackhawk emblem off Bill Mosienkos jersey when he scored a hat trick in 21 seconds. Love the Hawks Bob
I grew up in NY listening to hockey on the radio with Marv Albert. There were some classic games between Chicago and NY back in the 70's. Never got to hear Lloyd Petit. Thanks for posting.
Gives me goosepumps and tears to my eyes listening to Mr. Pettit. I grew up with him with his play by play. Very true. I may be at home, school, where ever, Lloyd Pettit took me to the Chicago Stadium. God Bless him and your family for providing such a tribute to a legacy that many just don't know about. Tears in my eyes, Thank you. Raul X
Grew up with my ear glued to the radio listening to Lloyd. Fantastic compilation. Glad I thought to look for Pettit on youtube. Thank you...thank you...thank you...
I can do nothing more then echo all of the preceding comments. This is THE BEST. Also a diehard back to 71 (born 2 months after the '61 cup), the memories you brought back are incredible. Third period was past bedtime, I would hide the transistor radio under the pillow and listen to the end of the game. A shame you dont have Bobby's game 5 OT winner - that Ranger series was also great. Nobody has or will ever be better than Lloyd.
Lloyd Pettit was THE VOICE of the Hawks and was, in my opinion, the greatest ice hockey announcer of all time. He painted a word picture that was immaculate, accurate, and exciting. Frankly, letting one's mind become actively engaged in the game abd allowing THE VOICE to frame the game was ll one needed.
I bet he's looking down now and mighty happy the Hawks are #1 again!
GREAT!!! Lloyd was the first person that I thought of when the CUP was hoisted. My brother too hooked me onto Lloyd in the early seventies. I believe that he still has a couple of recordings from a game vs. Philly in Feb 74. We would listen from our home in NJ on WMAQ. What a voice. When I got an XM, I was turned onto the Cubs 'cause I heard a little of Lloyd in Pat Hughes. I've been playing "Here Come the Hawks" for two days and its ringing in my head as the euphoria of the win remains!
now ii only someone would embed a Pettit Blackhawk scoring play into a recording of "Here Come the 'Hawks" that would make it perfect. Somewhere Llod is smiling the 'Hawks won the cup again, the new UC is rocking with happy Balckhawk fans, and, his minor league Admirals are surving 90 miles North.
Great Post. This brings back such good memories. Lloyd's calls of the games were the best, second to none. I was a grade schooler up in northeastern Minnesota (and a hockey fanatic, who loved the Hawks) and we could pick up the Hawks games on the radio. My brother and I would go crazy when they scored. I was in tears when the Candiens won the cup that year. Still hate Montreal to this day.
Oh man this is great! I grew up listening to Lloyd and and watching Stan and Bobby & Pierre and Glenn Hall when ever I could. Congrats to the Blackhawks on winning the 2010 Cup!!! Thanks for putting these clips up!
@stucknda60s same here, i was only 8 when the Hawks last won cup so don't remember it real well, but this was sweet, washed away the memories of cming up short in 71,73 and 92
Thanks for this. Petit was tremendous, he could really paint a picture. One more winHawks, and a lot of long time demons will vanish! Thanks so much for this!
This is simply fantastic. Please NEVER remove this piece of history. The only suggestion I have is to get rid of the Henri Richard goal (who needs sad reminders?) and replace it with Bobby Hull's OT winner in game 5 of the '71' semis vs the Rangers. It is without a doubt one of Lloyd's finest calls.
Great Stuff! Spent 4th grade living in Chicago and we spent the entire winter around the radio listening to the Hawks games. When we moved back to Pittsburgh I can remember tuning in, what was it WLS? Moving the radio around every which way but, loose to Listen to Hawks games. This would be a cd worth purchasing. Great work.
Wow, this is incredible stuff, and such good quality. Just like the new Hawks commericial, I was the little kid with the transistor radio listening to the golden tones of Lloyd Pettit. Thanks for sharing. Is there any more?
Thanks for posting. I live in Philadelphia now and they just won the conference playoffs. Reminds me of watching the Blackhawks with my dad when I was a kid living in Park Forest, a suburb of Chicago. Nice memories listening to Lloyd Pettit. Now the Flyers will be playing the Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup.
This is fantastic! Thanks for posting. I used to listen to this announcer with a crackly weak signal in Hamilton, Ontario when I was a little kid, but a big Blackhawks fan (still am today). Bobby Hull was my childhood idol. It was always unusual to hear "A shot, and a goal!" rather than "He shoots, he scores!" I loved listening to this - thanks again!
Thank you for posting this! You truly have a YouTube gem here. I remember listening to that 1971 Stanley Cup final game on the radio as a kid. Heartbreaking as a Blackhawaks fan. Lloyd was absolutely the best.
bobking, man this is awesome!!!!! PLEASE post more of these. Me and my buddy were just talking about how great Lloyd Pettit was and so I decided to search for clips.....this took us both back to our childhoods. THANKS!!!!!
The all time greatest hockey announcer and I should know. Living in the Detroit area we have seen and heard the likes of the accepted best hockey announcers, Danny Gallivan, Bill Hewitt and Foster Hewitt. Lloyd was definitely number one. This video is an absolute treasure. May it live forever on YouTube.
In 1973, myself and 2 friends convinced the Hawks we had a radio station in our school. Lloyd Pettit offered words of encouragement. Later in life, Jack Brickhouse told me how much he enjoyed having Lloyd as a partner on WGN doing Cubs and Sox games. After Lloyd retired to Milwaukee, he was involved with the Milwaukee Open -- and did a sponsors announcement. He was older, grayer, but still had those 'pipes.' If the CD's are for sale, I'll buy them. Lloyd Pettit, great broadcaster, great man
Although I've been a Rangers fan since 1965, I never missed a chance to tune into WMAQ 670 to see if the reception was good enough that I could catch Lloyd Pettit calling a Hawks game. He ranks up there with the legendary hockey voices of all time. This video is a keeper. Thanks for putting it out there.
LLOYD PETTIT WAS THE GREATEST HOCKEY ANNOUNCER THAT EVER LIVED. BAR NONE. anyone that eve listened to him knew how exciting he made the game. his only weakness is that he only broadcast the hawks for 14 yrs and wasnt even the play by play man for all those yrs. but he was just the greatest. ask anyone who remembers him. too bad that few do.
I watched the Hawks in 1973 on Channel 9 while living in Holland Michigan. A roof antenna with a rotor along with good celestial conditions where necessary. At times I couldn't see the puck because of all o the snow, but could always hear BP. Anyone under the age of 30 doesn't understand a word of this.
Arthur Wirtz was a big jerk for letting Bobby Hull leave. They were too cheap back then. One of the biggest jokes is when the old WHA was formed. It's great to see the hawks playing well. They do have a shot at winning the Stanley Cup.
Lloyd Petit influenced an entire generation of Sports Broadcasters who grew up in Chicago, Along with the likes of Jack Brickhouse, Bob Elson and Jim Durham. Besides Hockey, he also did Chicago Cubs Baseball, and could describe the blow by blow of a Hockey Fight like no other!
I Covered Blackhawks Hockey for a Chicago radio station (WTAQ) from 1981-85. I was able to broadcast my Sunday Night program (SportsJournal) live from the Chicago Stadium prior to the Blackhawks games. I was honored to be on the night they retired Bobny Hull's #9 and featured an interview with Bobby taped the day before.
The thing I remember about the blackhawk games were that the first period was never broadcast. The radio program came on at 8:15. It was always a disappointment when Lloyd would say that the Hawks were behind.
My brother and I were at the ols madhouse for th 50 goal game. I can still see the Bruins shking Bobby's hand. Lloyd was absolutely the best, and is yet to be matched. These are great memories. And 2010 may bring another Cup. I hope.
I grew up with Lloyd doing the games on both radio and WGN TV. I remember when Hamms beer was the sponsor. I too remember the heartbreak of the '71 Cup in game 7..I still can't believe Lemaire's shot beat Tony-O...Pat Foley was a great choice to replace Lloyd Pettit. I'm so glad he came back after what old man Bill Wirtz did to him...things are so good now, but this is nice to listen to and remember the good old days of Blackhawks hockey..."A shot...AND A GOAL!"
Good ol Lloyd. Emmy award winner.. I recall the scooter line.. Mohns. Mikita, Warrem... and many a day at the old Stadium.. Tony the Cop out side.. a good pal.. always took care of parking for us back in the day..
Would appreciate if you had more.. to upload.. I looked on my old reel to reel tapes.. we did that off the radio.. but most are all gone.. had a few Franklin McCormacks left from the Meister Brau Showcase.. my fav beer back then
This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen on Youtube. I'm from the Hawks fan generation after this, the one that grew up listening to Foley instead of Pettit and hating the North Stars, Blues, Red Wings and Oilers instead of the Habs. But I always heard how great Lloyd was, and now I think I have an idea why.
Thank you for allowing us all to time -travel back to those magical days of Blackhawk hockey. What a gift, lets get a copy of this to all the modern play-by-play jockeys who have lost their mojo. I can remember going nuts in my living room back when I was 10 years old. When they lost in game 7 of the cup was the first time I realized hearts are breakable because mine was shattered.
Thank you for providing the play-by-play audio. I recorded Lloyd Pettit Blackhawk games on reel-to-reel and the tapes deteriorated over the last 40 years. He made the games more interesting on the radio than they could ever be on TV. I was beginning to think that I'd never be able to hear him again.

Oh man this is great! I grew up listening to Lloyd and and watching Stan and Bobby & Pierre and Glenn Hall when ever I could. Congrats to the Blackhawks on winning the 2010 Cup!!! Thanks for putting these clips up!

If only Lloyd Pettit were still around, he would have enjoyed this season (2009/2010), especially if they win the Stanley Cup.
Did he call the 1961 championship team??

Thanks for posting. I live in Philadelphia now and they just won the conference playoffs. Reminds me of watching the Blackhawks with my dad when I was a kid living in Park Forest, a suburb of Chicago. Nice memories listening to Lloyd Pettit. Now the Flyers will be playing the Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup.

The bonus of this was hearing the organ at Chicago Stadium. Listen again, they play the Easter Parade song after Hull's hat trick. Great stuff.

Thanks. This is great. I listened to Lloyd when I was a kid. He was the best! Go Hawks!

Again, thank you for sharing this with us!

When the crowd got going you could not hear yourself talk. It was unbelievable

I went to my first Hawks game in the 1940's.
While I like Pat Foley a lot, the very best hockey announcer I ever heard was Lloyd Petit.
He was an artist and announcing Hawks games.
