don't listen to these guys, its easy to conclude that defenders will never win anything after watching this video...but people forget that speed glue has been used against defenders until recently. It is not so easy to smack away at Joo's under spin chops anymore, which gives defenders a fighting chance!

Joo's "modern" chopper style is nothing new, young man! He's just a Korean re-invention of the famous Chinese chopper Ting Song in 1990's. Like Joo, Ting Song beat some of the world's top players of his time including Jan-Ove Waldner & Jörgen Persson, and yet didn't win any gold medal from any event in WTTC. After 4 decades of international TT experience, the Chinese realize that a defensive chopper style of any kind simply doesn't work a fool's game. No more chopper to present China!

Defensive table tennis is a fool's game. It may make you look unusual, but it is not practical. Sun Tzu's The Art of War says, "Frequent defense leads one to a loss..... When you defend everywhere, you are weak everywhere..... The best defense is offense."

the goal is to get the opponent to hit a bad shot, or miss the ball. you can do that either with strong, fast topspin or with slow, very spinny backspin. don't think of it in terms of "attack" or "defense".

yeah i love his style of play and i agree but he needs to produce some top spins at least...you can't be defensive all the time because the game is changing and players are developing new skills quickly just my opinion :)

well, not true...you always have a chance to attack and some instances in the video you can see he doesn't attach when he can...point is he needs to learn to attack some returns :)

@stevema2 Joo Se Hyuk actually has a very respectable topspin loop attack and he uses it at times. You see him use it a lot more against only slightly weaker players than Wang Liqin. Look for him playing Samsonov, for example. But he uses it now and then even against the likes of Ma Long.
