He's as tall as the conductor standing on that podium. I have to say though that this performance is not as good as Colm Wilkinson's, or Alfie Boe's even. Sorry Dave.
Les Miserable is my all time favourite Musical seen several times, David does this justice, I saw Il Divo last night at London Colleseum and they were magnificent as always! thank you for this footage of David, he truly is gifted x
He is ok in this. He is trying to sing it too much though instead of spinning it and acting it. There are no subtleties for instance in the phrases - distinguishing one thought from another vocally. It's too robotic. He has a tendency to sing under the note as well, especially the longer he holds it. I think his vibrato needs to tighten up. If it does, that should fix the issue. He also changed the color of his natural timbre on the high note word "let" at the end and in turn ruined the climax
I like very mush your rendition of Bring Him Home, it is not an easy song to sing, I know, I sing it.... I like the way you slide smoothly from your head voice to your thorax voice with a nice feeling on top of that . Bravo.
This is one song that I love and hearing David singing it brings tears to my eyes.Colm Wilkinson is a great Valjean but I think David's version has more power and emotion.
To cocopianoboy. I listened to David Phelps. I found his voice quite pleasant for the genre he sings. I prefer David Miller's classical operatic performances. Both Davids have the ability to convey emotional responses through their artistry, something rare from most singers these days. Heck, most singers these days are created by electronic mixing and don't really sing.
david miller is a natural.... a handsome charismatic voice machine. alternating with high c's, head tones and lyrical tenor which involves difficult maneuvers, i find him simply magnificent. he sang this song differently from the rest of the other singers but it turned out extremely beautiful. he fits in il divo but he should adorn the great stages of opera or even broadway and london with his astonishing talent. divinissimo!
OMG how beautiful is this, I was tearing up within the first 2 bars... David is stunning in Il Divo, but to hear his wonderful voice by himself is fabulous.. Definitely added to my favorites... Wonderful, simply wonderful... :0)x
I am a trained singer and have performed Les Miserables professionally, so please don't accuse me of having a lack of appreciation. Maybe my comment should have been, "I hate when singers have such a heavy vibrato that it sounds like they are being shaken." For instance, Colm Wilkinson was the original singer of this song. He uses vibrato and it sounds wonderful and etherial. All I meant by my comment was that I prefer a light sound with THIS song. Sheesh.
@luixander19 Υου are wrong. a light tenor is a leggero (check your dictionary) wheras lyric is a heavier voice. The repertory for each voice is different although there is some common ground between the two voices. Check out wikipedia
for me, the song sounds best when it is sung with little or no vibrato. Miller's vibrato is very strong and makes it too heavy for me. It's just my personal taste.
@siroakleigh98 What most people including you, fail to appreciate is that vibrato is a natural occurence when the air hits the vocal chords and they vibrate. The lack of vibrato suggests that the voice is strained and the sound is not natural. Particularly, high notes cannot be sung properly or at all without vibrato.
@AnastasioFranco I am a trained singer and have performed Les Miserables professionally, so please don't accuse me of having a lack of appreciation. Maybe my comment should have been, "I hate when singers have such a heavy vibrato that it sounds like they are being shaken." For instance, Colm Wilkinson was the original singer of this song. I'm sorry for all his fans but this is awful singing! In the beginning the 'falsetto' voice is toneless and without support would never be heard without a microphone. When he goes into full voice the sound is artificial & ugly. The ending is painful - sorry fans of this madness they call singing :(
@CelesteVoce first, do you really think that colm wilkinson's version would be heard at all without a microphone? second, have you ever even seen Les Miserables? You seem to lack the context in which this song is normally performed.
This song is really not opera , it's broadway and it can be sung differently . Also there is something called head voice that even opera singers use for dynamics . But to tell you the truth , I like Colm Wilkinson and Owen Jones versions better than Miller's .
Here is 3x3 great singers - Beniamino Gigli, Tito Schipa, Giacomo Lauri Volpi, Aureliamo Pertile, Bonci, Francesco Merli, Galiano Masini, Enrico Caruso and me!
well I actually agree with all of those... so I'm surprised you don't like Miller. Well, I agree with all of those, except for yourself of course, considering I've never heard you sing. But the confidence is admirable. :)
@CelesteVoce tbh i really dont think he cares. Because he probs makes alot of money from doing his bad singing as you call it. But i think hes Brillant!!!! If he is that bad surely he would have not made it this far in opera and the crossover music. So i guess hes doing something rite.
He'd make a great Siegmund or Tristan. His voice sounds like it's getting richer and richer, but without losing any brightness. I remember seeing him in Pearl Fishers (Nadir) in 2000 at Opera Australia (Sydney). He's still young, but in about 10 years I hope he considers Wagner. His voice reminds me somewhat of Peter Hoffman.
I think it might be down the road. He starts off very light, but when you get to 1:50 it's as if his larynx drops another three feet, and you hear this richness that I didn't hear in his 2000 Nadir or his 2002 Werther. If he can sustain that for 4 hours I don't know, but it'd be nice to hear. I'm not normally a fan of tenors who sing Wagner...I like to hear baritones work up to it (a la Claude Heater), but I think Miller has potential to go in that direction. No rush though...he's only 35ish
Just saw him and the rest of Il Divo on 7/20/09 and David is just fantastic - his masters degree in opera performance is showing in this song. So very well done!!! Great talent! When he is tired of Il Divo, (if ever) he can fill up an opera house very well! Getting married in Aug. to Joy. Best wishes to two beautiful, talented singers!!!
Truly wonderful performance. David Miller's vocal range is perfect for this song (very difficult one to sing). His breathing and phrasing are perfect. The roundness of his tones and the extrordinary vocal control he has makes this a great pleasure to listen to This is just so emotional and beautiful! Love it! Bravo!
Saw IL Divo a few nights ago and it was the most wonderfull night of my life. The show was absolutely perfect and the guys fantastic. I got David's autograph!!!
Oh, God, I loved this... I´m crying. I´ve allways loved music, I´ve allways felt it so very personal, but long ago I stoped from crying, it moved me no more, and now I´m crying again... This goes beyond everything I´ve heard up until now, it might sound exaggerate but OMFG, this was heavenly.
i wouldn't say Colm is technically better, just different and yes, more appropriate for Valjean. However, this song is a wonderful standalone song and as a standalone performance, I think this blows Colm Wilkinson out of the water.
Thanks Laurene. This is simply wonderful. Its lovely to see David without his ID hat on. Its nice to see him with it but its good to see his talent outside of it.
Well sorry folks...i have heard his voice live...it is an operatic voice...it does not do this sensitive song justice...as he is much too much force...this is a sensitive, deep song...forceful...no...powerful in emotion but not in bellowing..it is the wrong type of song for him...his amazing voice is better in a Wagnerian Opera...thanks
I saw them at the O2 recently. Everybody was taking pictures, they have no problem with it. Some venues have their own policy but The O2 and Wembley in the UK, you can take cameras.
