i love her "geisya dance",but concept of geisha appeared at reast 200 years after this movies background age"japanese civil war"sengokujidai in japanese history. pardon my english.
"The finest silk/ Of choicest hue/ May change and fade away/As would my life, My beloved/If thou shouldst prove untrue./Our vow to love for a thousand years Is sealed with this cup"
Can't vouch for its accuracy as I don't know Japanese. But it would seem to fit the scene.
Kyo Machiko is a magnificent actress. I saw this movie in an art house in New Orleans and asked my Japanese American friend what she had been singing; he said the subtitiles were correct, more or less-I went "what subtitles?" I had been so hypnotized by Lady Wakasa that i hadn't even seen the subtitles. That has NEVER happened before or since and I see a lot of foreign films. I hope Japan appreciated her.
Kyo Machiko isn't just beautiful, she's positively hypnotic. When I saw this in an art house cinema in New Orleans, I loved the movie, of course, one of the best ever made, but I remember asking my Japanese American friend what Lady Wakasa had been singing. He said, well, the subtitles are correct, more or less.
I went "what subtitles?" I was so hypnoed by Machiko I didn't even see the subtitles! I see many foreign films and that has NEVER happened before or since. Kyo is a treasure.

I saw this as a kid back in the 70s. KPBS was having some sort of Japanese film festival. Very haunting and sad movie.

@FadedSilkandGhosts I think the person should be called a shirabyousi. And her movement in here is so perfect as shimai.
