Ivan Rebroff sang it (he was German, by the way --I. Rebroff is a stage name). That song, of course, inspired Charles AZNAVOUR to write one his greatest masterpieces (Les Deux Guitares).

I love the Wolga Ensemble's version better, it's the best version l ever did hear. A bit rare to find it these days though.

Gypsy music sounds pretty much the same -- from France to Spain to Russia.

No, Gypsy music is different in each country. the harmonies are different, the guitars, the guitar playing style, the singing, even the melodies are completely different, not even close to similar in most cases, you havent heard enough Gypsy songs. this particular song is played in both Russian and France so is not a good example of the differences.
