I'd assume it's a custom rangefinder so that the weapon system can determine the target's range and alter the projectile velocity accordingly (Which, I'm going to guess, is done by changing just how much gas is vented when a shot is fired).

@ForFREEDOM13 There is nothing to suggest in the video that it's accelerating in mid air. If you have compressed air you can control the velocity when it's fired by controlling the pressure. If your range finder can alter the amount of pressure used to fire the slug, it would compensate for that by increasing the muzzle velocity for more distant targets. It did slow down by the time it reached it's target. It just needed to be moving faster when it left the barrel.

@Chilimustard I will admit I know little about guns, but not about simple physics. Unless the bullet overcomes friction of the atmosphere then kinetic energy is intrinsically lost. Doing a simple (google) search on the model gives results on the "dialing in the sights" as being designed for the gun and/or used in the range finding of the gun and even an article on the patent.

@BinarySpike I know little about physics, and it sounds like jibberish to me, but there were no adjustments made to the gun itself. In fact, there are really no adjustments that could be made the the shotgun itself to adjust the speed of the projectile, and adding more grains to the load would have made it inaccurate. I can only assume that he did the range finder, and redialed because it is actually quite a feet to shoot an inaccurate gun at that range and hit your target.

@Chilimustard Eh? Venting the air in front of the bullet would increase it's speed. Patent #6065384 is based on that principle. Bullets cannot have a constant kinetic energy. The sights were specially designed for this gun, I don't see how else the gun could perform.

They do not test things like this on humans because the danger of serious injury or death is real. However at the end of the day, most less than lethal weapons will cause nothing more than superficial damage, and that is the point. A regular slug will kill you. A less than lethal round *probably* won't.
