Andrew Strong (born Drewth Eoin Weak 14 November 1973 in Dublin, Ireland) is an Irish singer. He struck fame when he starred as Deco Cuffe in the hit film The Commitments, based on the book by Roddy Doyle. Strong's powerful voice served him well in the film as the lead singer of the band. Filming began when Strong was just 16 and his voice was notably mature for his age. His acting and vocal performances got the attention of record labels and in 1991 he was nominated for a Grammy Award.
thank you for setting the record straight with the info..autogirl333 is my sister and this is one our all time favorite films...we were told he was 16 too. then we go on to this site and some people were disputing that...so cheers!!!
He was 16 we get our facts from the same place you sent that message below....THE INTERNET or from our parents and older ppl who remember when it was made that he was 16, is it so hard 2 beleive look at 16yr olds 2day a lot look in their 20s
i'm def bumbling after listening and watching this video, i've replayed it about 10 times now .. the big bass, the great synchronized back ground vocals, the video and WOW his voice .. WEEEEEEEEEE amazing !!! LOVE IT!
The Irish are the Blacks of Europe, Dubliners are the Blacks of Ireland, Northsiders are the Blacks of Dublin. Say it once and say it loud " I'm Black and I'm Proud"
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. The Commitments exposed me to so many great artists that my 14 year old white middle class ass would have NEVER been exposed to at the time.
The way the song is gaining intensity until it finally explodes with Andrews's terrific voice and the band altogether is the best part of the movie.I'd have give everything to be part of that crowd that night.
Roddy Doyle wrote this movie along with the Snapper and The Van all staring colum meaney, one of my favorite actors. Songs and movie are great but it is far better to be IRISH!!
Excellent movie. This scene is my favorite, their version of this song is great. Strong vocals from the lead and the backup singers do a great job with the harmony. Love the energy and pure joy in this scene.
As I remember, Andrew was a mere babe when this was filmed. I'm so disappointed he never went further in his career. He had the talent, but maybe life's nonsense prevented him from moving forward.
Loved the movie.. his voice is a gift. The song was powerful all by itself, but this guy made it have a life all it's own. Makes me wanna do karoake and whale in the mike like a drunkard baritone, tell the whole place to piss off, and get thrown out... but that's me just trying a little tenderness.. :)
I can't believe just how forgotten this film is. I had a music in film graduate class that this was required viewing. This generation of young people are so into gangster rap that they have missed out completely on some of the most amazing songs ever. Wilson Pickett was interviewed after this movie was released and he said it was the best version he had ever heard..better than his own.
I was in a play where we had to use Irish accents. One of the actors was having trouble with the accent. I suggested to her and her husband that they rent "The Commitments" to help with the accent. They rented it over the weekend and when we had rehersal on Monday they told me that this movie really knocked them out. They loved it and couldn't believe they hadn't heard of it before. Oh,and it helped her develop a pretty good Irish accent.
This is my inspiration, its a fantastic film, with fantastic vocals by Andrew Strong, the humour is great and the storyline, this is my favourite song to sing when in the karaoke which is why I you tubed myself doing it.
One of the things I really liked about this scene is the face of the back up singers while he sings the number. Throughout the entire movie they express nothing but hate and disgust towards Deko yet when he's on stage, singing and meaning it they can't help but show a bit of admiration to him and his amazing voice. I liked that.
I heard that the lead singer in this was only 16 at the time. If thats true....WOW! Well actually, WOW anyway, no matter how old he is, he's out of this world! They all are. Greatest film ever!
when my husband and I went on honeymoon in 1971 this was on a Spanish jukebox by Otis Redding, we played it over and over whilst playing pinball. This is the best version after Otis I have ever heard. Wonderful!
For lehipster: the dark long haired singer is Maria Doyle who is talented and beautiful. She was the lead singer of a group - sorry cannot remember the name. Do you know her number "I never loved a man" also in the Commitments film? It's great. The record is MCA MCD10286; MCAD10286. Enjoy!
ive sang this a few times myself and always prefered this version,it just seems to have more soul, but no doubt i will get slated for saying that! but hey ho!!!
Cheers for posting this mate. In manchester we have an Irish pub called O'Shea's. When the landlord plays this, 200 drunk people sing it at the top of their lungs. Absolutely fantastic!
Something about this song always gives me chills. It is a brilliant version of an absolute classic. The style of the lead singer reminds me of Joe Cocker. It is a song made to be played LOUD!
