  • i stopped watching at 1:00

  • regarding vitamin D dont you get that from sunlight, although you do have a risk of cancer.....

  • i might be wierd, but i went straight from being a meat eater for 18 years and i didnt feel very bad when i was getting used to the new diet, but i did eat vegan "junk food" for a long time.

  • I can tell you that me and my family are on a fruit veggie smoothie diet and i can tell you it is masocistic. It's easy if somone was born with a downgraded sence of taste, but for me who has tasted glorified mexican food, pizza, and simple roast beef sandiwiches it's pretty hard. Also i'm not gonna give up meat just because of the animals. Unless some catgirl bounces my bones off that aint hapening.

  • seriously you arent one to try disproving vegetarians and vegans you dont know proper english me talkie? how dumb can you get what people dont understand is vegetarians can eat a lot more then veggies and meat has very little protein and even meat eaters actually get a lot more from everything else we eat

  • You attract even MORE flies with manuer. >.<

  • That was very helpful. Thank you, kindly.

  • Wonderful parallel to my own experiences. Great job on reaching out.

  • I know what you mean, by the whole looking glass. I became vegetarian after watching the meet your meat video, and ended up sick for hours, because I had eaten steak earlier in the night. The whole damn house smelled like fried cow carcuss and it was hell. About a year later, I became vegan; After learning how unhealthy dairy was, and the cruelty behind the dairy and egg industry. Oh, to be ignorant again! I would never turn back time though, cause I'm at ease with how I live my life,& how I eat

  • I would just like to point out that on your video you put a little note saying, and B12. Basically B12 comes from dirt, not from meat, the only reason we do not get it in veggies is because they are so sanitised now, and back then they would have picked up plenty of B12 from plants picked fresh and raw from the ground.

  • More specifically the bacteria in the dirt. That is where the animals get it.

  • food chain baby

their is a reason why humans are at the top

  • I'm a vegan but I follow the plant-based diet because of health and vanity reasons

I do feel sympathy for the animals but it's not really the reason I'm a vegan.

  • really loved this vid as a new vegan talking about the emotional part was helpful

  • leap to veganism, I could end up not getting enough calcium! I hate taking a bunch of pills so I'd rather not have to take supplements if at all possible. Also, do you know of good yogurt substitutes? I'm a sucker for yogurts :-/

  • Non-biased nutritional information (i.e. not from a vegan org):

    w w w . eatright . org / ada / files / vegnp . pdf (remove spaces)

You can find reliable information in there regarding vitamin D, you may find that you have to suppliment...are you already doing this? You said you were deficient at the moment. Calcium is pretty easy to get, many vegetables contain it.

I eat soy yougurt, it comes in natural and flavoured forms. I hesitated in trying it because I thought it would be gross...

  • ...but I love it. I love the vanilla ones and the apricot and mango ones I get :-)

  • Thanks so much! I will definitely check both of those out :) I am taking vitamin d and b12 now just because I'm obviously not getting enough the way I was before. I don't like it, but I don't want to be unhealthy too.. that's no good! It's good to hear the soy yogurts are good, I would have expected them to be gross too, lol!

  • @TheVeganicWitch calcium and iron are hard to get from vegetables without the presence of acid, they are soluble in acid. This does not destroy them, it just dissolves them from hard mineral chunks to something you can digest. You can ferment vegetables, such as saurkraut or marinate in vinegar. Notice white powder in a pot when you boil water? It is calcium solidifying. In parts of the world where we have hard water (everyplace i have lived), we must clean things like kettles with vinegar.

  • I just randomly came across your video and I found it really interesting! I'm personally a vegetarian as a diet but not as a conviction about animal cruelty... although, I do find it a plus to be at least lowering the amount of animal products I eat! Anyways, I was curious about how you do get a lot of calcium as a vegan? I have a vitamin D deficiency (not due to diet, due to lack of sun exposure because of lupus) so I already have trouble absorbing calcium and I'm afraid that if I make the

  • Good video with a balanced perspective. I am trying to follow a pure vegetarian diet. I prefer not to call it "vegan" because of the way that term is perceived by some. I'm not militant or religious about it. All I know is that I feel better now that I have removed animal products from my diet. I save money and try new recipes too. I just had a nice dinner of homemade black bean tamales. Delicious!

  • Yeah, I can understand that. And I was tempted at the beginning to go the "pure vegetarian" route. What put me off is that in my experience no one really knows what vegetarianism is anyway, even the self proclaimed vegetarians in many cases. They never seem to check labels for gelatine or other stuff, they wear leather, some of them forget fish is an animal (I used to be one of them a long time ago), and sometimes they eat "some chicken, when I feel low in protein" etc etc...

  • ...Also, once I knew about milk and eggs and the amount of suffering they cause I really didn't feel there was much of a real difference between that and omnivorism.

Soooo in the end I decided I would rather be associated with militancy if it also had the connotation of ethical consistency, which is much more important to me then having my choices be considered moderate.

You are completely right though, you can easily argue for veganism from a *completely* human centred perspective :-)

  • Very intelligent and reasonable point of view. Definitely worth the time if you consider becoming a vegan (as I am - already being a vegetarian).

  • Thank you :-)

  • i agree good video i do eat meat tho i am more in the eastern style which is ALOT less meat than the western world eats i eat about 2 oz of meat a day cant give it up i have tried but still i respect you how u feel and your ideas if all vegans could think like you we would have a happier world i am just sick of people like ecloveanimals saying "meat stays in your body 3 days" when scientifically thats not possible

  • i have no problem if u want 2 explain if more people ate veg or vegan ways that we could feed more people because we would not have 2 feed as many animals and the fields that the grain that is used to feed them could be used to feed people instead but no they cant tell you the positives of being a veg or vegan (sorry about saying veg just cant spell it) just the negatives of eating meat which is sick if u cant stand in your ideals and not harm anyone else's ideals then don't speak

  • because your doing harm to your self and others and your views because all i want is for you to be honest and open and not lie about how "horrible" meat is its all lies and you know what i am sick of it i can be honest why cant everyone else i will be making videos for eating meat and for not eating meat i have had it

  • I understand your view on more "militant" or "hardcore" vegans, but I also believe that such vegans are necessary - while groups like the Animal Liberation Front and whoever else do the gritty work, the mainstream, everyday vegans can do their part. It's a team effort! :)

  • I do see your point definately, I'm not against most ALF actions. If I felt I'd be good at I'd definately do liberations, I cannot fault that kind of behaviour in the slightest.

I agree everyone should contribute according to their talents but *in my opinion* it isn't healthy or productive to be completely seperated from and atagonistic to the larger community. Sorry if i'm not being too clear, its late and I'm tired :-)

  • It's all so true, I relate to everything in this video and you sum it all up so well!

  • your video is completely right.

  • Well I don't think they would have had much success against large animals or anything fast until they had more sophisticated tools BUT once I was playing in the sand dunes as a child and I caught a lizard with my bare hands (it was pretty small though, it wouldn't have made much of a meal. So if clumsy old me with no experience can catch a lizard I'm pretty sure desperate 'cave men' could do it too. In tribal societies the majority of food consumed is that gathered by the women usually (70-80%).

  • We must all start from our selves and its good to avoid "meet eathing habbit" and I find "digestive value of food" as very interesting subejct to learn for our selves

  • Well, regardless. Those who seek to abstain from animal-by products to their "best," uncertainty is everyone's most difficult opponent to..uhh...counteract? Yeah.

Even with all sorts of info out there, and the "society" that we're stuck in..with common "conformities," it's handy to educate folks.

Ok, I'm on another roll again, with so much to say, and their connections. But I'll stop here..hahah

But yeah, regardless, I won't stand down, nor should anyone else...as we seek the peace. Cheers!

  • But yeah, the uncertainty of "nutrition" and all that, would also keep people at such mercy of difficulty; even when they hafta put up with so much slander and having barely any support.

Well, as one who seeks to stick with fruits, just as you said "we all have our own different paths" or something like that; I sure am stubborn and solitary, which made it no problem for me..hahah (even when it meant facing people head on and trash talking them for discouraging me,...hahah)

  • Aye, 10 mins, and worded with public waryness. =p

Aye, when it comes to mood swings and stuff like that for "new vegans," I recall it being the body's detoxification. The cleansing of meat-based foods out of the system, where cravings of meat will skyrocket.

But also note: at such time of detox...moods go wild, SEVERAL thoughts jump over the place, uncertainty also jumps in. This is what I notice as I made my transition, going cold turkey of course. HAH!

  • sounds similar to the detox raw foodists go thru =)

  • Hi Veganicwitch.

I have been watching your videos for a while now and this is my first comment. I am a vegeterian, but have totaly cut down on all animal products and have a family of meat eaters. I tune in to your videos as you inspire me with your peaceful nature. So you have touched someone. I am from Adelaide and run a fairtrade clothing & giftware store.

    Keep up the good work.

  • Hello, I just moved from Adelaide to Hobart after living in Adelaide for all my life, i've probably been to your store if its in the CBD...its great to hear from someone from my home town :-)

Good on you for selling fairtrade items, I really think you are making a huge contribution to human rights, seeing as most of the stuff people buy is made by people living in extreme poverty. And congratulations on cutting down your animal products, every little bit does help :-)

  • Personally, if you are making a concerted effort to eliminate the use of animal products in your life, I believe you can call yourself vegan.

The definition of vegan says that we "seek to exclude — as far as is possible and practical — all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose."

Remember that its not about being 100% perfect all the time.. Its about the EFFORT you're making & the motivation behind it! :)

  • I think as long as you stop intentionally consuming animal products, yes. I mean I have a jacket with wool fibres woven into it I bought years ago, I think its ok for me to keep it until it wears out (getting rid of it wont change the fact that I consumed this product) but if I just went and bought a new one also made of wool because I wanted to, I don't think I'd still be vegan. Veganism to me is a commitment to STOP, you have to stop doing what you were doing before to be vegan...

  • ...From my perspective the "as far as possible and practical" is there for the things we cannot control i.e. the fact there is animal products in car tires and the very road you drive on. I don't think it covers someone who still eats the occasional egg or peice of cheese, although they may well be transitioning towards veganism but not yet ready to make that commitment.

We can't afford to water down the definition, look what's happened to vegetarianism (i.e. eating gelatin and sometimes fish)

  • Its a tough line to toe... for example, the other day I joined & left a vegan forum within hours.

I had posted about the fact that I feed meat-based cat food to my cats. I certainly don't like it, but I'm not convinced by what I've read about vegan cat foods & what I know of cats' nutritional needs.

Some ass told me I might as well be eating meat myself then & that I was not vegan.

I feel that such a situation falls directly under "possible & practical".

  • Hmmmmmm...personally I think that person is a bastard. Some cats do well on a vegan diet but definately not all and it can be very dangerous especially for male cats, it can kill them! Cats are obligate carnivores, which is something this person doesn't seem to want to understand :-(

I'd say most vegans feed their cats a meat based diet, I don't think it negates veganism at all. I am uncomfortable with it personally though, which is why I'll probably only get dogs because they are omni.

  • I had my cats before I was vegan, but I haven't closed off to the idea of having more in the future. Whether they live with me, or in someone else's home or a shelter, they'll be eating meat-based catfood BECAUSE they're obligate carnivores. The only other alternative is on the street...

Also my male cat is a feline leukemia virus carrier - an infection could put him in a viral state. Vegan cat foods often cause urinary infections, particularly in males, as you said.

  • I think someone who says you should ONLY feed cats vegan foods and if you don't you're a bad person is advocating animal abuse through neglect really. If you have problems with feeding cats meat (which I do understand) you most probably shouldn't keep them. I mean, what's next, vegan food for pet snakes? Dogs have proven to be able to be vegan just as easily as people but the same is definately not true of cats.

  • The thing I don't get about that philosophy on cats is what's the difference? I mean, if a human decides to stop eating meat, then a dent is made (however small) in the machine. If a cat is alive, it must eat meat, it doesn't have that same choice that humans have. It'll eat meat no matter where it lives, so why shouldn't I open my home to an animal in need?

I also keep a dish of food & water on my porch for feral cats in the neighborhood who otherwise might not have much to eat.

  • I think that's AWESOME! :-) Its just hard for me personally to imagine buying or handling meat again. That being said someone gave me some tips which would be helpful for me, e.g. they get free meat scraps from the local butcher and mostly feed their cats that. Using free or almost free meat would make me feel better about it. All that said, I would like to rescue some cats one day :-)

  • Haha, actually we had a snake until about a month ago. Like our cats, he was a rescue, and came into our lives before we were vegan (or even vegetarian).

We ended up giving him to a captive-born reptile sanctuary where he will have a lifelong home. We tried to find a way to put him back in the wild, but I don't think you can (short of flying to Burma). He just outgrew the level of care we could provide. We just couldn't do the live feedings anymore, & that's all he would eat.

  • I agree that there's a danger to diluting the definition though.

For example, a few months ago I saw a girl about my age in a restaurant wearing a tshirt that said "VEGAN". I held up a forkful of my salad & pointed to same location on my chest & then *thumbs up*. She smiled, & when I was walking to the restroom, she stopped me. We chatted a moment about veganism, & I noticed she was eating a veggie burger w/ cheese on it. I said "I didn't realize they had a vegan cheese here, is it good?"

  • She said "Oh no, this is... er... actually"

Not knowing what to say, I just kinda shrugged & said "What can ya do?" I was horrified that she was wearing a vegan shirt & eating a big ol' piece of cheese, but I want to cause an awkward thing with a stranger either.

Now if we were in the desert @ the only restaurant for 100 miles & she said "Oh, my car broke down & I've been walking for 2 days looking for a phone" -- I would've bought that cheese FOR her...

I don't know if that makes sense...

  • Well you know it is possible to ask for the burger minus cheese LOL XD

I don't know what I would have said in this situation, no idea at all. She sounds like she must be one of those 'trying to be cool' vegans; wearing the shirt, talking about it and all the while eating cheese (and if she was eating cheese she prolly didn't check if the burgers had egg or whatever).

    What an uncomfortable situation :-(

I'm not prejudiced towards non-vegans, I just think we need to preserve the word meaning.

  • Yeah, I didn't want to be rude so I just said the first thing I thought of.

  • Love you honey. :) There are lots of pitfalls to any diet, I think.

  • now now, temper temper, don't kill meat eaters.

  • Killing meat eaters would definately not be vegan LOL

  • No but the instinct could take over while you where sleepwalking and you become like a vampire and the villagers would go after the witch and all hell would break loose.

  • Oh yeah totally, like the lack of B12 (even tho I suppliment LOL) could make me into a homicidal maniac but because I think I am a good person I would not be able to express this in a conscious state. I would be the sleepwalking omnivore murderess mwahahahahah LOL

  • :( take it easy now.

  • Don't worry, I'd only eat the unfriendly omnivores, the ones who leave "mmmmmm meat!" comments on vegan videos ;-P

  • My brother is dying from his bad brains, nothing wrong with the body though, do you want the "leftovers"?

  • Dying from his bad brains? I hope you don't mean literally :-/

  • He thinks it is cloven hoof disease. But I reckon it's merely the last stages of his psychopathological schizofreniac evil man disease.

  • Oh ok, yeah in that case I'll make an exception LOL

  • whats your opinion of fruitarianism?

  • I think its totally cool, however, I don't actually like fruit very much :-(

  • You express exactly what I feel.

But talking about only eating fresh or even raw vegetables, I think this is even better. I only managed to reach a 30% part raw food (I´m working on it :) ), but there are a lot of people who eat 100% vegetables or even 100% fruit and feel great. Perhaps it´s the amount of food they eat :).

It´s always a pleasure to hear you talking about veganism.

  • I think she meant eating ONLY vegetables and NOTHING else... No seeds, no nuts, etc etc.

  • What? Seeds and nuts are cool with me :-)

  • Great perspective

  • You so much speak the truth in that video. Two months ago, i was eating meat and now i avoid the stuff. And in my mind, everybody should do the same, but i try to remember that it took me years of trials and errors before getting finaly ready to take the plunge and i know that most people i know would have to take several years to make that decision as well. And it is true that we need to work for ourselves and not try to change others cuz only they can do that job. Great video gorgeous! MMMWWAA

  • Stuffing envelopes @ break-neck speed? Does this mean you found a ... dare I say it?

  • Temp job. Thank the gods its only temp tho, I really couldn't deal with doing that all day every day :-(

  • You attract more flies with agave nectar than vinegar. hehe

    5* and favourited :o)

  • I was going to say that but mid sentence I wondered if people would understand what agave nectar was and ended up just saying honey anyway LOL

    Thanks!! :-)

  • What IS agave nectar?

I read somewhere that its a good sub for honey and that when mixed with apple-cider vinegar & flaxseed oil, it's the best salad dressing ever...

  • @CatCommunication: Agave nectar is a plant based, vegan sweetener derived from a cactus-like plant.

Maybe you could find some at a health foods store?

  • Does it taste like Maple Honey?

  • it tastes better than sugar, a little sweeter, but doesn't hurt your teeth or have a bad aftertaste. it doesn't taste like maple syrup either, not as dark tasting, though there are some darker agave's that almost taste like maple syrup. it's low glycemic and tastes really yummy!

there is also a honey alternative that mixes chicory, rice syrup & maple syrup. 'just like honey'. food fight grocery sells it online.

  • It looked like there were "light" and "dark" varieties of agave at the store I went to.

Do you know which is which and which is better?

  • i think it's just a different process. the dark is good for a cheap replacement for maple syrup, the light is a good replacer for honey.

i personally like the dark more because it isn't as sweet but has more of a richer or bold flavor. i alway tend to use more of the light (which is a mistake) the flavor is lighter but sweeter(which makes it go quicker compared to the dark). so depending on how sweet you like things or how rich of flavor you want the sweetness to be. (if that makes sense)

  • the dark is better for baking since you have to use 1/4 less than sugar, cut other liquids in the recipe and perhaps lower temperature 25 degrees

i can hardly eat cane/beet sugar anymore. there is a vegan bakery down the street which is the only place i eat granulated sugar. but i find the things i use agave in are far better tasting- and i haven't tried making donuts or danishes with agave yet(which are the things i get). but when i do try that, i'll make sure i make a video!

  • it is made from cactus. same plant tequila is made from.

  • SOLD! LOL :)

  • I've actually seen it at Whole Foods (a health-food chain store) but I wasn't sure what it was.
