  • that behaviour where you see that salamander bend its head up is called

the unken reflex. its the salamanders attempt to scare you into leaving him alone by displaying the coloration on his belly. the coloration is said to convey how toxic it is. Other amphibians such as fire bellied toads are known to also use it.

  • The Salamanders you saw were in the Ambystoma famil and they are fossorial creatures so they are only above ground one night a year to breed. Every year after the first long spring Rain you can usually go out and see them

  • what do salamanders in washington eat

  • Worms

    mmmhhmmmm :)

  • do you no salimaders are rare

  • not really man, i dont know about anywhere else, but in illinois salamanders are very common. you just gotta know where to look.

  • do mole salamanders have lungs or do they breathe through their skin like lungless salamanders do??

  • I am curious as to wether its a queen though.. Do you remember what it looked like exactly?

PLEASE ID FOR ME, it was hard to tell from the vid.. PLEASE GET BACK TO ME, much is unknown about their range, and existing numbers...

  • Quen snakes are VERY common here in PA, and a very doclie species. To my knowledge however, they're numbers arent too good in your area. Its a species I've personally been very interested in, and have studied in the field for years..

And remember too, that the northern water snake ussually has a very vibrant color when born compared to that of the adult northern water snakes..

  • dude queen snakes are totally not common. Check that fied guide again

  • Actually, they are. What state are you located in. Queens are very shy nervous snakes that are mostly never seen by people just walking by the water. I am speaking on behalf of their numbers in PA, and I assure you THEY AE JUST AS OR MORE COMMON THAN GARTERS. Maybe you should check YOUR field guide, but in Pennsylvania this is the only snake I can count on catching EVERYTIME I decide to look. Anywhere near water, youll find them...

  • More common than the Northern Watersnake and they are also very abundant in many states.

  • Overall Queens are very uncommon in PA but they may be locally common, meaning in one county they just may be exploding in numbers.

  • Yes, that snake was most defenietly a watersnake... Looked to me like a queen snake. These are a HIGHLY aquatic snake ussually thriving near streams and in moving water...

  • You really should be on tv:)

  • Totally agree on this, nice voice to keep listening to and nice face, should apply for Animal Planet or so :D

  • witch citie do you live in

  • I live near Belleville, IL

  • where is that from chicago? i live in Zion about 45 min. from chicago wating for some rain fall to go out.

  • If someone tried killing a snake or a salamander near me i'd knock em out. Thats a sick thing to do to an innocent creature.

  • what road are you on? Levee rd.?

  • Marbled salamanders breed on land in areas that normally flood. The eggs hatch when it floods. You can't find 'egg masses' of them in the water because the female lays the eggs under cover.

    Nice video.

  • i thought you werent supposed to pick them up like that cause it damages their mucus layer. im no expert or anything, thats just what i heard. plus the slime is really hard to get off!

  • sucks most of the cool animals are on the road

  • damn yur smart keep on herping i love your vids

  • I wish there was a way for drivers to know if there were small animals like that in the road. But the snak could have been there since a day when it wasn't cold.

  • sadly, I have seen a lot of occasions where people swerved out of their way to hit a snake on the road.

It is really a shame people have to act like that.

  • yeah i know a lot of kids at school like to kill the poor guys.

  • I also actually want a spotted salamander to keep because they are my favorite salamander. My brother likes the red spotted newt.

  • Reebbo -sadly, I have seen a lot of occasions where people swerved out of their way to hit a snake on the road.

It is really a shame people have to act like that

    -------------------------------------------

I take it you have been to Florida

  • nice work. the marbleds breed in the fall... different strategy. get ahead of the other ambystomatids so you'll be large enough to feed on them come spring thaw!

i'm so sick of seeing african lions, elephants, etc... its nice to see more people that are interested in whats in their "backyards."

  • i kwnow u probably won't look this, but any way...verry good videos, i've spent a good time on it...but, where can i get one salamander for me???pritty strange question ok... but i love those animals...
