You know with the power of the Dreamcast they should have at least up the graphics a little. I'm not o graphics whore, but being the Dreamcast was a 128 bit gaming system it could have made it a better seller. Still this game does look very fun to play though.
Doesnt look like a bad game. Unfortunately games that involve solving puzzles especially complex one never been my cup of tea. I never hear much about this game on the DC forums.
This game might have been more popular if it didn't have such an absurd title. Persia and Arabia are two separate entities, but I guess the developers saw them as interchangeable. Stupid Americans!
i'm not an expert in video games or anything and i know everone has different taste for video games as for everything else, but in my opinion this is one of the lamest(if not the lamest) version of prince of persia i've seen, guess i'm too young to "appreciate" old things like this xD
Playing both for the experience is recommended, but it appears that Prince of Persia 3D doesn't work with new computers. Add that to my list of PC games that won't play anymore because PCs suck for compatibility and glitchiness.
The Prince of Persia, quite ridiculously, was always Arabic up to the recreation of the Prince of Persia series on the Xbox360 and PS3. He was always portrayed as the son of a post-Islamic Arabian Sultan in Iraq. In the newest series, he's actually in ancient Palestine. The name "Prince of Persia" is just a western misnomer, back when no one knew there was a difference.
arabs have no fucking history whatsoever, and you are still kissing our asses and putting up our history as your own video games...
its bad that you can't find anything in your dumb history to be proud of. Prince of Persia belongs to Persia. If it was Prince of camels or sheikh of camel that would be more arabic
B) The game developers are French... And I pointed out an error they made.
C) The story of the game takes place in Iraq and Palestine, and the references are to Arabian Lore (Jinns, Solomon's temple, ext.)- the game has Arabic calligraphy in the Temples, and in the Sands of Time, you can see Muslim minarets with little moons
Wow, I was just trying to clarify, and you showed me how much of an idiot you are. I know not all Persians are as malicious as you.

Since Persia use to be predominant and most powerful empire.. so every single nation wishes to have a great prince like Prince of Persia. And i know that not all irish are as retarded as you. 1. Jinns: look up "Jaini" and "Jahi" in avestan language. Avestan "Jaini" would phonetically become Pahlavik "Jen".
2. Calligraphy: by calligraphy you must mean script. PoP settled in medieval persia (iran), and therefore will have kufic (arabic) script ornamenting mosques.Mosque by the way is Pahlavik (middle persian) word: mazgad (from earlier mazdakata), meaning house/building of mazda.
Being a convert to Islam, and having 2 degrees in near eastern Studies, I can confirm that your etymology for "Masjid" is incorrect. "Ma" is a possessive prefix in Arabic. "Sujood" means prostrating. Ma'sjid literally means "place of kneeling" and the word is found in much older Semitic Languages, outdating the first appearance of the Iranic language family (which is from the indo-European branch)
The moons weren't ever implemented in post Islamic Persia, only in Ottoman Iraq (1450's)
@LuckyDukeSeven I know enough (not all, just enough) about semitic grammar to already know what you wrote about the prefix Ma-. There are quite many words in Arabic that are not only from Iranian, but other language groups. Unsurprisingly these arabized words will have forms also with "ma-" for obvious grammatical reasons. For example look up Muhandis: "engineer", (from hindisa, from persian (h)andaza, that word even screams non-arabic origin (4 consonants for the root: "h", "n", "d", "s").
I was actually under the impression that "Hnds" was a Hindi loanword to Arabic. Well, guess you learn something new everyday. It might have gone Hindi to Iranic to Arabic.
Arabic has relatively few loanwords compared to the languages surrounding it (and has given far more than it has received), but it does have many. And indeed, the languages it borrows from have been Hindi, Turkic and Iranic in nature- the general neighbors of the land. Even Greek words(the word Sufi perhaps)
I meant as a grandiose symbol, not a decorative one. But good eye Persian. My people used crescents in some of our old artwork too, but it was never atop our castles or homes. So did our Nordic neighbors. For the Persians, it was the image of the winged Ahura-Mazda. For the Arabs, it was a dome with a pointy end. For the Turks, it was a Crescent based on some dream some Osman I apparently had.
Whatever the context, I lost interest. Ciao amigo.
@LuckyDukeSeven The moon ATOP the kings crown is indeed a "grandiose" symbol, and not a silly decoration.
post-Islamic Iranian architecture (mosques and what not, including domes) is based on that of the Sasanians and has nothing to do with Arab architecture.
@LuckyDukeSeven It's irrelevant whether moons were implemented in post islamic Iran or not. But as I described the "Hazar Afsanak" (> "1001 Nights") is where Mechner incorporated many things.
One last thing (I posted to other responses)- unless you provide an academic source, from a university for your hypothesis of the words "Jaini" and the Arabic "Jinn" (which is once again, a word that comes from an intricate etymology present in other Semitic languages, I have no reason to believe you.
No that this is that important. We're watching a video game clip, right?
@LuckyDukeSeven And where are your sources ? ("younger") Avestan is a language spoken by some ancient Iranians, "Hazar Afsanak" "Thousand legends" was a story collection gathered during the Sasanians, and which Arabs turned into "Alf Laila Wa Laila" ("Thousand and One Night(s)"). Not the other way around, right ?
Where are my sources? Burden of proof is on you. I'm not making any outlandish claims about two unrelated words (Jin and Jaini) being related.
"Hazar Afsana" or a thousand legends, or nights, or whatever, was indeed a largely Persian work. However, the stories in it were about lands from Morocco, to Egypt, to China. And the book itself was a malleable one, with various versions of each story. There's a lot to talk about if you want to get into the nitty gritty- no time for me.
1) Moons were implemented by Ottomans. When did Sassanian kings ever use the symbol of the moon? As far as I know, neither Arabs nor Persians used it. Only Turks. Ultimately, it was adopted by their Arab constituents.
2)When I say "younger" or "newer" I don't mean that the Avestan language(s) are not old. I mean that their Semitic counterparts, from a different language tree, are much, much older.
@LuckyDukeSeven Arabs called it Masjid due to phonetic reasons (among other things, Arabic lacks the the consonant "g", at least in classic, and and up to this, in modern east Arabic).
3. Minarets: Those moons are recorded in historical artifacts, from Sasanian kings crowns all the way back to earliest mesopotamian civilizations.
... So right, I've got no idea where you got the nothing that the word "Masjid" is related to Ahura Mazda, but I've never read a single paper, study or thesis that ever said that. As I said, two different languages, two different ways of speaking.
Minarets as stylized in this game were exclusive to the Muslims, and pushed by the Ottomans later on. Persians (under the Safavid Empire) developed a varying style.
Anyways, this is just a highly inaccurate game I remember playing long ago.
@LuckyDukeSeven 4. Mechner called it "Prince of Persia" because unlike most in the west (you included) he knew his history, and knew the origin of the bulk of the "1001 nights" (from Pavlavik, "Hazar Afasanak": "The thousand legends"), you know "Sheherazade", "Shahriar" and other clear Iranian names and titles...
I hope I made some clarification, if still in doubt you can easily browse Google.
On "Prince of Persia"- no. You don't seem to comprehend that there are different games in the series. The first game takes place in Iran. The subsequent games have levels everywhere from Iraq to Egypt. The last Prince of Persia game made takes place in ancient Palestine/Israel, has a completely Semitic story line (Unlike the prince of Persia before it, which had no Semitic influence and was totally Iranic), and has nothing to do with Persia itself.
I remember seeing this game in a GameStop store so many years ago. I didn't have a Dreamcast, but I would've loved it seeing how it's similar to the early Tomb Raider games.

Nope, it wasn't very popular. It's a great game, but it's the black sheep of the series since it was very similar to Tomb Raider (which everyone was sick of by then). Plus the company that made it (Red Orb) was bought out by Mattel who don't handle their games or distribution very well. Plus it's on only the PC and Dreamcast, which a lot of console gamers didn't have at the time.
@elbryan42 Try. But none the less, awesome game! Still having trouble today with the last lvl's. Long time i couldnt just not find the way through the game.
And it is everything but easy, but very long same pieces of actions though.
Unfortunately no. I checked the credits and it's Jan Lindner who voices Assan. Although Roger Jackson (the Cheshire Cat) is in the credits, they don't specify which character he voices.
I bought it, and it has music. Most DC games when you download them has stuff stripped out to fit a 1 gig GD-ROM game onto a 800 meg CD-ROM. It's always better to buy.
There is nothing ripped, i checked out the disc it has the audio file. Also, yes, it is way better to buy, but i bought my dreamcast last week, and there is no way i can buy a dreamcast game. 1 store had very few dreamcast games, but they only had sports crap and cannon spike for $25...anyways, i cant buy from online, so sadly burning is my only option.
Ah yes, the much beloved game icon, the magical death sensing door...always knows to open once all the enemies are dead. Its like it can sense that you've just massacred a horde of armed villains and you've passed some secret door ''macho'' test XD
i know u would say this looks like tomb raider .... but actually the first POP game on dos came b4 tomb raider ... and it actually had the first cool jumping ... avoiding blades .... and dueling with swords .... and of curse the secret doors and the bottoms .... so this is wt the 3d will look like ... even if there werent tomb raider
Combat looks slightly faster in this port, but they were mor dramatical in the original with the zoom and all. But is better this way, because sometimes was boring fighting in the original =P
Heheheheheh. I made a few walkthroughs for the PC version of this game. Floating Ruins is such a glitchy pain in the neck, I'll probably never record it.
I have a few problems with this game, it's not that it's terrible, but I do have a few issues with it, and I think the worst thing is the music.
Makes everything seem so... repetitive, and makes the game seem like more of a chore than it actually is. And there's no triumphant music when getting your sword or finishing the level. =(
The Dreamcast version's MUCH easier to play. The engine on the PC is much glitcher. Plus on the PC, if you have a newer version of Quicktime than the game needs (it came out in 1999 I believe) the game crashes before it even starts.
Basically the PC version had a ton of problems gameplaywise, and the DC version pretty much fixes them all. But the PC has a couple more levels, some more music and voices, and some different weapons.
So it's a toss up. But gameplaywise, go with the Dreamcast.
Too bad they took out the combat music for the Dreamcast port. Not just since combats are silent in this port, but because the combat music from the PC version was so fucking good and epic.
Yeah, unfortunately the game is censored. Not by much (finishing moves gone, no beheading in slicer traps), but nonetheless. I DO like the combat better than the PC version, as it's much more stable.
Overall I love it better. Just after making my vids I checked out vids of the PC version (since it doesn't work on my puter anymore) and I cringed at seeing how the Prince moved. Too many bad memories with the uneven, glitchy movement on the PC.
Speed run. :P :D

FuckedYourDad 1 year ago
I bought it, and it has music. Most DC games when you download them has stuff stripped out to fit a 1 gig GD-ROM game onto a 800 meg CD-ROM. It's always better to buy.

@elbryan42

It looks like the people who did "Soul Reaver:Legacy of Kain" Did this and it even sounds like it too X3

I understand this is a dreamcast game but it seems to be a mockup of the new pops
KewlImp 2 years ago
i know u would say this looks like tomb raider .... but actually the first POP game on dos came b4 tomb raider ... and it actually had the first cool jumping ... avoiding blades .... and dueling with swords .... and of curse the secret doors and the bottoms .... so this is wt the 3d will look like ... even if there werent tomb raider

Combat looks slightly faster in this port, but they were mor dramatical in the original with the zoom and all. But is better this way, because sometimes was boring fighting in the original =P

ah "arabian nights" a timeless classic. =)

which version is easier to play? cus i dont have a dreamcast so im getting it for PC or should i buy a dreamcast and then play it?
calypso694 2 years ago
The Dreamcast version's MUCH easier to play. The engine on the PC is much glitcher. Plus on the PC, if you have a newer version of Quicktime than the game needs (it came out in 1999 I believe) the game crashes before it even starts.
Basically the PC version had a ton of problems gameplaywise, and the DC version pretty much fixes them all. But the PC has a couple more levels, some more music and voices, and some different weapons.
So it's a toss up. But gameplaywise, go with the Dreamcast.

thanks a ton

Too bad they took out the combat music for the Dreamcast port. Not just since combats are silent in this port, but because the combat music from the PC version was so fucking good and epic.

lol when i see this gameplay it is too much stolen from tomb raider :( The first Tomb Raider game came out three years before this.
STEAMflipp25 3 years ago
Ah, this will be fun to watch through.
For some reason, I kept thinking "Tomb Raider" when I saw the gameplay. lol

Indeed...
STEAMflipp25 3 years ago
is this the game that was ported to the PC as 'Prince of Persia 3D'?
Bananas1000 3 years ago
Actually this is a port of POP3D for the PC. But yeah, in essence the same game.
elbryan42 3 years ago
Yeah, I posted this before reading the description. hehe
The control and graphics look better, though I think the combat looks bad, as in wooden and stiff, and no finishing moves :(
Bananas1000 3 years ago
Yeah, unfortunately the game is censored. Not by much (finishing moves gone, no beheading in slicer traps), but nonetheless. I DO like the combat better than the PC version, as it's much more stable.
Overall I love it better. Just after making my vids I checked out vids of the PC version (since it doesn't work on my puter anymore) and I cringed at seeing how the Prince moved. Too many bad memories with the uneven, glitchy movement on the PC.

2D games seem to age better than 3D ones. I'm sure the game is good but these graphics are almost painful to look at.

Ignorant me thinking the sands of time was the original.....
Now I know prince of persia has as much history as mortal kombat or any other long time spanning game...
And of course, nice vid Rob. =]
RaionBot 3 years ago
Thanks. SOT is actually the fourth game in the series. :)
Every POP game is excellent.

This game is create before the Prince of persia the Sand of Time !!!
