  • Also, following from my previous remarks, although this music is strictly-speaking, "liturgical", it must be understood that the musical resources its demands are beyond those of any parish or cathedral (other than a well endowed pipe organ). At the local level, the talent and other requirements for this music are non-existent. This is music for a major Basilica such as St. Peter's, St. John Lateran, or a concert hall.

  • I have studied the Missa Solemnis for almost 40 years. Lots of folk try to read it into some insights into Beethoven's personal spirituality or relationship with God. I think that's ultimately impossible. What "is" possible is an understanding of how Beethoven understood music's capacity to affect the human psyche and spirit.

  • Incredible! Tears flowed from my eyes all the while I listened to this. This music and this performance are beautiful beyond imagining! Thank you for posting this, carosaxone, and happy Beethoven's birthday! No greater gift was ever given.

  • This is wonderful music. I like Beethoven's use of the Dorian mode at the beginning of the "et incarnatus est" and the symbolic use of the flute trills representing the Holy Spirit. For me there are moments in the Missa Solemnis which are transcendentally beautiful and greater than any music written before or after Beethoven. The Benedictus is particularly sublime. The long drawn out "passus" in the Credo- moving beyond words. Thank God for Beethoven!

  • Beethoven gregoriano o.o?......

  • Stunning performance.... great sound quality.........

  • This movement (if that's a proper term to call it) is incredibly beautiful...I'm weeping as I listen to it...words cannot describe it.

  • Thank you for uploading this GREAT masterpiece

I have been listening this work for years but it sounds so different now.

  • Marvelous.

It would be nice if one could petition YouTube to allow certain long movements of musical works to be uploaded as one file, such as the Credo here - this one would be just 20 minutes.

By the way, YT has expanded to allow 15 minute videos, recently, so there's hope.

  • @LDixon007 I think they will allow longer posts if you are a premium (I assume, paying) member. There are whole feature length films on this site unfragmented.
