I know you were trying to be helpful, and maybe you've heard this before (but not in a nice way, which i will try to do) but you cant not have cats on a vegan diet. They are carnivores only and like others have said, can get many problems if they don't get animal meat in their diet. It is fine for you to be vegan, but it is not whats best for cats, so I please hope you give meat diet to your other cats.

p.s. i hope Alera is happy in heaven, he will be missed by all <3

If you choose to feed vegan remember to supplement Alera's diet with extra vitamins and minerals. Without taurine, that naturally occurs in meat, his organs can actually shut down, he can become blind, etc.

I know the "taurine" story that cats need; but therefore it is good to seek out the truth about vegetarian diet possibility that contains supplements (already in the vegetarian catfood) and find people with cats in good health on vega food and find out thorough scientific research made by someone who loves animals and life and decide, search the Internet for specific information. We must question the economic system we are trapped in. We must 'think' different, completely change, LOVE creation.

I had read cats can do well on vegetarian food but need supplements which must be in the vegetarian food; it is not only "no meat" but special designed vegetarian food for cats and it is said it contains all they need. There are very good stories about cats, even who were ill when on meat diet but cured once on vegetarian diet and live up a high age in good health. But vegetarian catfood is still expensive..., yet in this era of animal overproduction hence abuse, we must find ways to change.

I love what you did with Alera but cats need meat. Dogs on the otherhand can eat both, but cats require meat to stay healthy. I understand your concerns with cruelty, but you have to understand that they are carnivores. Maybe find a place where you can get cruelty free meat? Farmers markets where they arent crammed up in cages and injected with hormones/steroids?

Cats need meat. Fortified or not nothing will fully replace meat. Plus its healthier just giving her some meat than stuffing her with supplements. Not only do they need it, but giving raw meat(on bones) will also keep their teeth healthy and clean as well. The best bet is finding cruelty free meat (not mass produced) and giving it to the animals. And yes, he has a heart of gold.

It's wonderful that you have cared for this cat so much. However, I wouldn't feed a cat a vegetarian/vegan diet - cats are carnivores, and they need certain nutrients to survive - a cat that does not get any taurine (a nutrient that's only found in meat, and only in the bones) can suffer blindness and other health conditions. Cat's nutritional requirements also mean that they shouldn't eat human or dog food. Even if cats don't hunt, they are meant to eat animal protein.

but when i think of the chickens and the rest lower sentient being SUFFERED and BRUTALLY killed. I will reduce killing as much as possibe doing my part. Alera is not changing to veganism fully just yet but once I got money I will buy more and more vegan food to feed the rest of my cats and cats I meet in future.

I just wanted to point out that a vegan diet is not always the best choice for a cat, even if it is more humane. Cats have very specific nutritional requirements, and a vegan diet must be supplemented with special nutrients for a cat.

not just cats.. humans needs nutrients from meat, but with a good knowledge of nutrition, we can completely substitute meat with vegs. for example protein and taurine comes in soybean. i dont see a reason why cats cant do that change

I am deeply concern on imposing a vegan diet on a cat - mostly because they are obligate carnivores. I do think that people get carried away sometimes, imposing their own personal lifestyle onto companion animals. Dogs can do well on a vegan diet because they are omnivores. Cats, on the other hand, being a true meat eater, shouldn't be on a strict vegan diet. The way I see it, vegan and vegetarian food appeal to the human, and not the cat.

Great! Very happy to see how well Alera has recovered! Now about vegan cat food. Interesting , I am strict vegetarian, but still give meat based food to my cat. Is vegan food really ok for carnivorous animals like cats? They need special amino acids and proteins etc... Please let me know your thoughts, will you only feed Alera vegan now?
