I love the movie and I think it's one of the best movies of Tom Cruise. What makes the movie fascinating is not the story, but the exploration of the samurai culture.

All that's missing is the bit where they talk amongst the cherry blossoms, and Katsumoto hands him back the things he'd taken earlier and says, "When I took these you were... my enemy."
I love that scene.That sums up Katsumoto's intelligence right there. He doesn't say that Algren is no longer his enemy, or that Algren is his friend. All of that is in the way he says that when he took them, Algren had been his enemy.
I think the scene beginning at 4:18 where Tom Cruise rides back into town with the samurai, now his friends, and you see the expression of awe on the translator's face, is one of the best scenes in the movie. Thanks for including this!

It's crazy nowadays how many Asians worship Western beaty, have their eyelids operated and dye their hair to resemble White people. Look at the Japanese actors from this film and others. Nothing wrong with that kind of beauty, I say.

@RepDestroyer something tells me the samarai would easily cutt of all the fingers of the spartan. Mayber half of their head and take some flesh out of one of thier legs before the spartan found a way to end the samarai completely.

The scene where Algren defiantly fights Ujio with the wooden swords in the rain, no matter the result, never quitting. THAT is what the world doesnt realize about American might, spirit and resolve! It is not shameful to fail. It is shameful to stop trying untill you cannot move an inch!!

Yeah, some sources have proved at least 5 French military personnel took the side of Tokugawa ministration, refused to surrender, fought against the newly organized Japanese government backed by the British.
They finally surrendered in 1869.

I love old movies like this(this and Tora!Tora!Tora!, Platoon) and some new ones that uses very little effects like The Pacific and Band of Brothers, those people and explosions are not CG and that's what make a movie EPIC xD !!! (but ofcourse they ain't cheap lol)

I dont see why they had to take away the samurai and their way of life. They were the peacekeepers and upheld justice. This makes me wanna renew the old way of the samurai and hell, Im White! lol

@BigDunker1992 its like how we tool away the chivalry from knights its very similar well except that they were killed or forced to change where as the knights were just phased out but still and having the population the world has it would be too hard to bring those ways back youd need huge government initiatives and it would still take a while but it would be cool haha

For the real story, check Jules Brunet... He was a French officer and his story is much more amazing than the movie one... Of course, Hollywood couldn't made a movie with a French hero... ;-))

All that's missing is the bit where they talk amongst the cherry blossoms, and Katsumoto hands him back the things he'd taken earlier and says, "When I took these you were... my enemy."
I love that scene.That sums up Katsumoto's intelligence right there. He doesn't say that Algren is no longer his enemy, or that Algren is his friend. All of that is in the way he says that when he took them, Algren had been his enemy.

I think the scene beginning at 4:18 where Tom Cruise rides back into town with the samurai, now his friends, and you see the expression of awe on the translator's face, is one of the best scenes in the movie. Thanks for including this!

@shotb1963 lol no australian. its easy to be cruel to prisoners and criminals. its easy to train. but their beliefs can only be tested when they are about to die or kill themselves and if they were ever captured in a war i bet they would beg and be grateful to their captors making them and their "perfection" highly hypocritical. i highly doubt that there were many samurai's like this and if there were it would have been out of conditioning rather than bravery

@RepDestroyer Well the Spartans were the strongest soldiers of the old times, but the Samurai have more agility and their armour is easy to use and wear so its like a stalemate.
