In the 1977 film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" this synthesizer was played by the character of Claude Lacombe (Francois Truffaut), and he whistles along with the notes.
I have one. I use it with a Yamaha YC-20 combo organ in my band. Old Yamaha's one some the cheesiest sounding keyboards I've ever heard, but I love them! There isn't a better monophonic/monotimbral synth out there. This kicks the ARP Pro-Soloist in the ass!
I have one its built so dam tuff but is quite limited in tonality. I also have an Octave Cat which is infinitely more versatile but horrendously constructed. The Sy2 is not the synth for noise making
The filters are almost the same and set up in the same way LP -> HP (CS80 had HP -> LP). The SY-1 and SY-2 definitely share sound character with the mighty GX-1. :)

Kerry Minnear of Gentle Giant used one of these. You can see it in their BBC "Sight and sound" concert from '78.

Got an SY-2 myself. Probably the most fun you can ever have is just messing around with one of them

secret hint: the "presets" are just rows of resistors...... say hello extra functionality.

pity the video sound isn't great. Sounds rather tinny through a tinny mic ;)

Is one of the synths in the gx-1 the same as this synth? Same filters etc? It sounds similar.

My analog gland is moist in response to this twiddling. Computers can make all these noises, but look at those swithces! faders!
I have synth envy.
