@violenceteacher6669 because it was 4th down and they wanted to make sure they get the first. Running place are much less riskier than passing plays. If they get the first down, then they only lose 10 seconds or so off of the clock because of the spike, then they have time to run 3 pass plays.

There is such a thing as a dumb question, and this proves that. If, and with Lewis in the backfield this is a big if, they get the two yards the needed they could kneel on the ball with at least 20 seconds left on the clock and have a first down. Then would then have 4 downs to take passing shots at the end-zone (e.g. win the game). Smart call, but bad blocking, or, rather, damn good penetration on Ray Lewis' part.
