I know he can't hit the high notes anymore, but I'd rather hear him sing it, even if without the high notes. It's kinda cool that he lets the crowd take part in it, but still... He could've sung the chorus himself at least once.

Well, age can affect your voice, but That's not the main factor. It's, indeed, because of the smoking, but he's also had vocal nodules, because of poor vocal technique. His voice is great, but he sung from his throat, which is apparently not good for the voice. His technique has improved though. That aside, he might still be able to hit the notes, it just won't sound as good as before, and it would potentionally damage his voice again.

i know this is old but not sure if you ever got answered, but here it goes. lol it could be a number of things. like i know he stretched his voice out alot bak in the day which could've killed his voice wen he sings higher. the smoking thing is really minor unless you over smoke or get throught cancer.
