@mnpd007 I own a squier too and I can get great sounds out of it. With a great amplifier I don't really see why I should pay ten times the price I paid.
@kleinebudde Squiers are much better built now than in the past but next time you stop by your local music store, try out the American stuff and you'll see the difference. The Squier classic vibes are killer for the money too if you want a great guitar for less. But try the higher end stuff for fun and you'll find they just have a warmer, more open sound and and a more solid feel. The hardware is better too. They also make for a better recording sound if you do any professional recording.
I'm self-taught, I don't know shit about scales. If I want to use a note, I don't worry what scale it is or isn't from, I just drop it in. If it sounds good, it is good.
Alright, but after finding out that e.g. the Eb note "sounds good" over an A chord, you might find out that you need an Ab over a D chord to have the same good sound, and that is just what we are talking about here.
True, I have found such, but only by extrapolating from one chord shape to another, not by knowing sharps and flats and all that stuff. I know how an E chord looks like if you shift it a string over ( down physically, up in frequency) , it miraculously becomes an A, and you can drop in a similar fret placement to achieve the same effect.
Does mean your playing is handicapped by needing to see the fretboard tho. :-)
Ok scratch that. Can't really tell what's going on with his fingers. Too blurry. Now I'm thinking he's just silky smoothe with the thumb work. And good god that dude's thumb is John Holmes-esque. Keep that thing away from my girl!
Knopler himself describes his sound as fingers on a strat. I think in this vid the guy is wearing finger picks though. Interesting, never seen that on an electric. Probably just don't pay enough attention though. Sweet sound.
I'm really interested in his right hand finger picking...does anyone know of any vids about right hand lead picking...is there a name for this style or technique?
Proof positive that artistry is in the artist not the guitar. I love your right hand technique? Where the heck did you develop that picking style. I love it!
This is not my main guitar, so it does not bother me that much, but you are right, the finish is poly and a bit sticky, but generally I like those JV Squiers and especially this guitar. I have two other red MK Strat clones - one also based on a JV Squier - with a nitro neck refinish, it is much nicer.
is that a jap strat? im sure it is...you can tell by the neck finish....sounds great..ive got one...1989 lefty f serial...just wish i could play it like this dude..
That's a 1983 vintage Squier JV with the standard PUs (the US made Fender vintage PUs - the same as in the first vintage reissues from the early 80ies). I don't think you need any spacial PUs for the Knopfler sound, just the technique and wood that matters IMHO.
hmm, I feel myself that I do not sound totally relaxed on this video. I admit sitting in front of a camera and explaining things in a non-native language still feels a bit strange to me. Not sure about the Berlin philharmonic. Anyway, most people seem to like it :)
Hey I would not be concerned...no orchestra on the planet can play Strauss like they do on New Years Day in Vienna. To me, MK is a contemporary Strauss..brave of you to try this in public view.
This video is grate ! I have always wondered how he did that ^^ and witch scale he used. :D
