  • My, a beautiful engine! A few nitpicks about it, however... that watertower 'Big Boy' passes at 1:40 is scarily close to the engine. And, although the engine seems a little... too polished for my liking (it's a working engine, after all) it's a lovely rendition of a powerful locomotive. Well done!

  • just missed some smoke at the weals, the preasure schould make the train explode now XD

  • Bloody fantastic model! Shame the animation seems too smooth. Remember a train will be vibrating much more. That smoke effect is amazing too; not quite believable, but adequate.

  • @sebcastilho Hi there - I was Teesside too hehe. Yeah it's not perfect but oh well... I only managed to solve first round of problems of how to animate it all, and didn't get time to go back and refine everything. This was my frist 3D animation in maya though so bound to be a little rough :P

  • @luckyday465768 yes, but it takes a long time to make new renders.

  • @kuwait891 no, this was one of 5 projects I did in my final year, i chose the subject, not the university.

  • Wow. That is a great animation. Nice work!

  • @kuwait891 No, not when I was there. there is no assigned topic for final year animations, students can do whatever they like as far as I know. I don't see why it should matter either way.

  • Well hey, with these talents you can get a very good job working at a company like aruan for those high quality models and animations.

But if that happens I dont think my pc dare stands a chance rendering the smoke alone XD

  • @omglolwtfmudkips hehe, i got a job in a movie studio after showing them this animation. I did almost go into games afterwards, but now I have my own company which is pretty fun :P

  • Wow, Im surprised it took you 7 weeks to make all of that, I thought it would take the experienced modeler 2 years to get the model done, but wow. All that in 1 3/4 months.

  • @omglolwtfmudkips Hehe, thanks, Although in movies, experienced modellers would be expected to work a lot faster than that on most projects... This model would be classed as a rough, low resolution pre-viz standard, with a bit of prettying up.

  • what programs did u use and have u got the files?

  • JESUS H CHRIST!!!! Thats AWESOME!!!

just a shame it has no sound

  • wow youre good.

  • i have just bookmarked this page, it's freaking awesome

i do some basic stuff like this. but nothing to this magnitude

nice work :), keep it up

  • The amazing thing is, it looks almost real!

    What program is this?

  • modelling, animation, dynamics and rendering was all done in maya. maya also handled the z-depth compositing. then there was a load of post-production and some compositing done in combustion and shake.

  • this is awesome :O

  • I must say, this is the BEST 3D animation I have EVER seen. I wish I could have talent and the ability to learn all of that stuff, you can do almost ANYTHING with those skills and by showing that as your piece of work. Truly AMAZING, highly artistic, realistic, supreme detail, this is what you can call hard work and art, real art. I wonder how long it took you to do the 3D and then the animation, and again truly great work nicely done! 5/5.

  • Many thanks for all your praise and kind words! To answer some of your questions: The model took about 7 weeks to construct. The reference was all photographs from the internet (I wasn't able to go and see one of the preserved engines). As this was a university project there were time constrains and sections I didn't understand so some corners were cut. The animation is mathematical, A week using basic expressions to create all the motion. Rendering took 2 weeks with 9 CPUs.

  • Darn good video. As a railfan i can say there are some missing and unprototypical parts. Other than that I like it. Try to make a short movie with this, please.

  • Double Negative visited my University (Bolton) last year and I think it was this video featured as a good example of 3D. Absolutely brilliant, well done.

  • Hi Northliam :) Yes it was this one... I remember them asking me if they could use it on their little tour. Glad you liked it... Im in the process of making a much better one at the moment. Will post it up when its done :)

  • This is awesome, man. The only problem I have with it is that you missed the fron numberboards ("eyebrows" if you will)

Sorry, but I'm a railfan, I have to nitpick;).

But that aside, this is one of the best 3D animations of this locomotive I have ever seen.

  • This is awesome you really captured the big boy
