@jujucaster. Hi guy; don't worry about it! I only wish I could play like Hank - of his genre he is the best in the world - but don't let that persuade you that he is the best! There are so many genres of music and every genre has it's key exponents. Everybody will tell you that Jimi Hendrix was the world's greatest guitarist! Yes, BUT in his particular genre. Did you ever hear Jimi playing country & western; or shredding; or heavy metal - NO!! Each to his own and we shoiuld all realise that!!
@WetaGuy: If you like the remakes, why not seek out the original Santo and Johnny version from the 1950s, which is tough to surpass even today. Arlen Roth did a very nice version of the song a few years back, too. Santo and Johnny played steel guitars, not standard electrics.
This is a great Santo and Johnny song from an era before listeners all developed attention deficit syndrome. People just chillaxed and enjoyed the music. Sometimes less is more. Or as George Harrison said, It's just as important to know when not to play during a song.
Have you ever heard from Pete Korving, he is Dutch and a phenomenal guitar musician. He also plays many songs from The Shadows .....listen to it on you tube!
eeeeesh ...what a bore , he doesnt play the hell out anything he just puts everyone to sleep with this boring version of a lovely song.....gatton tears the ass out this song!!!!
@magmajet Try listening to the original 1959 version by Santo and Johnny. Their version doesn't 'tear the ass out it it' either. So what? Those versions of the instrumental that do tear the ass out of it end up ruining the whole atmosphere of it. Danny Gatton and Brian Setzer have both done 'tear ass' versions of it, yet they're not a patch on the original Santo and Johnny version (and they wrote it). The whole simplicity and atmosphere is lost.
i allways thought this song came from the movie sleepwalker(s) i admit i could be wrong, not as young as i was a lot of beer has flowed over the old brain since.
@jimbobmarley1 Actually it was originally a 1959 hit for Santo and Johnny (who also wrote it), so it's been around somewhat longer than 'La Bamba', the film about Ritchie Valens (not Valence).
Grew up Listening to Hank and the Shadows, had all the albums they produced. Moved on to Mark Knopfler then Stevie Ray Vaughan, all different in styles but all great!
Serioulsy, more people need to learn to play with both precision and feel just like this. And he does it with the whammy bar in his hand, which is even more difficult. Incredible playing.
Also in a movie called Sleepwalkers, about these sort of vampire people that were afraid of cats. Based on a Stephen King story if I remember correctly....
Kudos to Hank Marvin for playing a beautiful melodic line so well... but to be honest :D this sounds like something that could be fairly easily improvised by a guitar player that knows their way around a scale or two. The expression he puts into the song makes the difference...
thumbs up if you think the rhythm guitars tone is better :)
