  • @audesemusic Exactly. And I'm sure that Bowie was flattered as were the AWB. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

  • its bobby byrd, im pretty sure...he always did a big intro for the godfather of soul...

  • Eric B & Rakim: I Aint No Joke

  • esse som é d+.no quarentão! DEUS nem pode imaginar o que se passava, quando tocava isso naquele lugar!pena que virou restaurante comunitario.

  • @karcaradf , ,,, eu dessa época do 40tão... era muito bom!!!

  • pass me some peas, grits and ham hock!

  • WHOA!!!! Shits amazin, wish I was ther

  • This maan will amake you straAAight,

  • the big payback yheaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • i love james brown

  • In the dictionary, there should be a picture of JB next to the word "tight"!!! The most exciting shows I've ever seen were his!!!

  • Pass the peas like they used to say.

  • This was what influenced Fela Kuti and started Afro Funk!

  • Everybody talks about the Ali Foreman fight. You hear a lot less about the music festival. I often wondered, who all payed, how long it was, & what the budget/band salaries were. BTW , in order to "make a point" to anybody that even though about "stepping out of line" Mobutu slaughtered an estimated 1,000 ("criminals") people in the same arena where the festival & fight took place. B4 hand obviously.

  • is this on a cd or a bootleg?

  • Such a shame that Mr. Brown felt threatened by AWB...nobody owns a sound...

  • @nobodyownsthesound - Mr. Briwn didn't feel threatened by anyone. He knew he was the original and the best. He just didn't like it when bands tried to copy his sound, especially when they didn't admit they got it from James Brown.

  • @PaupDA2000-Get over yourself pal; EVERYBODY knew/knows Mr. Brown was the first and the best. However, I don't recall Mr. Brown going to such lengths to try and discredit Sly, Bootsy, Fred Wesley, Maceo, George Clinton et al's music. Notice the pattern? There wasn't any real difference between AWB's music and the music of the men mentioned above; only their skin color. Like anybody has to "admit" to James Brown or anybody else where their music comes from. Take your reverse racism outta here.

  • Actually, these riffs had been used in gospel and R&B since the 60's. But Brown added the "star/sex appeal" element which was taboo before him because of racism. Then Mick Jagger counterfeited it and many others, even Iggy.

  • @clarkewi - That is completely untrue! Mr. brown singlehandedly incevented funk and took music from '2 and 4' and went to '1 and 3'. No one did this before him. R&B and gospel had some good stuff but they never had riffs like that until Mr. Brown invented them.

  • Check out Ike and Tina Turner's "I think its gonna work out fine" circa 1961 - accents the beats in a "funk" style used in gospel "reviews" on the "chitlin circuit" too. But you are right - there can be no doubt that Brown took it to an entirely new level (blasted it into outer space!) even spread it to Africa and Fela (have you checked Fela Kuti out? He's the "Godfather" of Afro funk taking Broadway by storm now in the Big Apple. And all us Americans are proud of JB for "doing it" God love him!

  • Great song!.

  • He said, "Get yourself & your soul together!" - Classic

  • I would like the name of that announcer. He said that James could make my liver quiver. LOL I love it!

  • Comment removed

  • The announcer is Danny Ray

  • Comment removed

  • @mkeym That would be Danny Ray (I believe)

  • This is SO filthy. I can't wait to get the DVD.

  • wow! i never knew james brown went to africa! :D thanks for posting! :)

  • Yes! Both James Brown and B.B. King went to Zaire and performed. It was during the week of the fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. They released a DVD about the entire event.

  • What year was this? Was this the year that Ali fought George Foreman? I believe it could have been he was in the documentary that Spike Lee did on Ali. I really would like to know when this was taken. It's great!! Sounds good & LIVE!!

  • Just Seen Soul Power Its an Ace Film!!

  • i was at the premiere in NYC. Very good documentary!

  • You gay Jason.

  • you gay willie. 88 was a bad year anyway lol

  • There can only be one Soul Brother #1. If you saw him in the 60s you witnessed adrenalin in the making. He will never be equaled. I studied his music for years. There isn't a song on the radio today that I can't trace to a JB lick. RIP Mr. Brown.

  • James Brown was everything you said because he wasn't an old fogey who thought that all the best stuff had been done.

  • He was a great bandleader and Singer on top of being a fine entertainer. Never afraid to move the bar up, consistent with the bonus surprise that he was an active Republican. Nothing not to love here.

  • ok seriously.. I am really going to have to have Danny Ray do an intro for me, I mean even if I'm doing yard work I will be the coolest mother out there pulling weeds lo.l... long live JB

  • pure james brown i love this song

  • i just saw fred wesley last week perform too....these fellas know how to get down

  • i saw james brown twice live (and im only 26)...i cant forget the introduction..its something that cant be done by anyone else....the build up...only he could pull it off

  • you were lucky. i'll never get thee chance 2 his great performances

  • They should release this live album... what a great version of Pass the Peas !!!

  • There are 19 tracks for this concert, believe it or not I found it but I had to do a few things to but I have them on my hard drive, and believe me there are some funky, funky, sharp licks on it.

  • email me please , where i can get some leads .

  • WHAT A BIG PAYBACK

  • what a big PAYBACK

  • "This man will make your bladder splatter."

  • great story behind this song... Average White Band ripped off the bass line and horn arrangement for "Pick Up the Pieces". James got pissed and released a rip-off of their rip-off called "Pick Up the Pieces One By One".

  • cool story, didnt know that

  • I've never heard that story...and since the bass and horn parts for "The Payback" and "Pick Up The Pieces" are not the same - they're not even similar - I'm inclined to think it isn't true. I've heard never heard of a JB track called "Pick Up The Pieces One By One", either (source?).

However, James did intentionally copy David Bowie's song "Fame" with his track "Hot (I Need To Be Loved, Loved, Loved)". James felt Bowie was ripping off his style, so he recorded the song as...well, payback!

  • Pick Up The Pieces One By One IS a rare JB track. It's been out for years, but not by his major label and he didn't used his name or The JB's.

I believe the band is called AAWB which means ABOVE Average White Band. JB wasn't 2 happy with them using his sound.....

  • Thanks for that, Gooner...now I know why I've never heard of it before!

So, what album does Pick Up...One By One appear on? How might I track it down to hear it?

  • @garethac81 - It's not on any album. It was released as a single.

  • @DaGoonerFunky it's AABB - above average black band - and I believe James was tipping his hat.

  • @DaGoonerFunky - No it was the 'AABB' 'Above Average Black Band;

  • @djbirdflu Yeah, but they did a pretty damn good job for some Scotsmen. It definitely had the funk beat.

  • The intro is called Pass the peas, written by the JB's

  • ur right, it is

  • Smoking!! One of the best versions live.
