@Diloman64 Thanks! Actually he's pretty good. The video was for a class project to demonstrate different aspects of what they keyboard could do - not to play a single song.
@selfdstrukt Thanks for the positive thoughts. This was a school project made by a single person hardware AND software - a little more credit is due. It's nothing like the reactable - where do you see physical blocks or wave synthesis? Trust me, I know music very well. This video was put together quickly (a long time ago) to showcase basic functionality not to make it sound good. If I had a team of people with investment (like reactable does) maybe I'd have the time to do a proper demo. ;)
@selfdstrukt BTW, you're watching an old prototype video before things were more complete and you only highlighted one out of several applications that can be used simultaneously. If you want a better look /watch?v=8IPRES6WF50 although you probably wouldn't like that either since I'm not a company that can afford professional production. However, unlike the reactable - this isn't an instrument. It's a musical exploration tool; mostly for children.
@selfdstrukt What fucking dumb ass thing to say, this is an incredible project that you're trying to seriously talk shit about? Trolls will be trolls...
@FeeLtheHertZ I had to look up what trolls were because I have such a life, and enjoy myself so much away from my computer that I did not even know that I had so many replies to my comment. You know what most people do when they create something similar to other interfaces already available on the market? They make it superior to the products already out before publicly showcasing their idea.
@selfdstrukt Name an interface similar to this prior to 2007? 1) This isn't a product. This was a school project built by a single person and completely nonfunded. This video is an early prototype required to be posted and shown for the class. 2) Would you call every music touch application on the appstore a copy of the reactable? Music + touch doesn't = reactable. The reacable is a sound synthesis system that manipulates waveforms. The only thing in common is is music + touch.
@thehornypuppy Thanks, it's supposed to be 'big ass' so that it's multi-user and people can explore and collaborate on music at the same time. It's not just a step sequencer - each application can be used at the same time. It's not for making recorded music, but for music exploration and entertainment. Not all music is meant to be performed or recorded. ;)
@cerupcat I didn't said it was bad but i been thinking about this all day...and really the cube thing...could be used for making some great stuff. And i see it's editable on the go...i can really see myself using it as a plug in in FL Studio or Audition.
@cerupcat If for example...you could draw a line...in the squares stuff...you could probably make a section sound like a sequencer...and then use little squares to hit a bigger one in bassline fashion. A combination of the musical wong and squres...it would be awsome if you could load an audio sample on the squares, and since you can decide how fast it bounces you would only have to count how many measures you want that to be repeated.
umm wouldnt you rather just play a normal one... i mean thay can be cheaper and your finger is less likely to roll and hit another note cuz when u press down it uses the other notes next to it to for like a PHYSICAL barrier so your finger doesnt hut the next note when u move it... this is pointless
@Fugalmonkey Thank you for your positive comments. This is what you call a 'proof of concept'. You must of only watched the beginning since I assume you're talking about the keyboard? There's several other applications. With that said, what type of physical keyboard can manipulate the size of the keys to match the user? That, in itself does not make it pointless. I imagine all the 50+ iphone/ipad keyboards are also pointless? This is not meant for live performance by any means.
@Mikiztar Where? The keyboards have a ramp up so it may sound like a delay. The musical blocks are quantized and aren't supposed to play when pressed; they play on the next closest beat so they stay in time.
@Mikiztar I don't know where it seems slow unfortunately. You may be confusing something being slow for how it's meant to be. For example, the menu popups are triggered by a 'hold' gesture and therefore that could be perceived as being slow (it's not meant to respond right away).
@cerupcat I think what Mikiztar was getting at is that in the video there appears to be a significant amount of instrument latency - i.e. the note sounds a good 50 or 100 milliseconds after we see the finger hit the key. In any style of music where rhythmic accuracy matters, most musicians would find this very hard to play.
@spazdor Yeah, video is a bit misleading. For example, the violin has a high ramp time on it. So it actually starts soft and gets louder and thus sounds like extra lag. The latency is around 20-30ms in this video and lower in my newer ones. :)
@vincentizghra Only the keyboard is time sensitive and it's not meant for live performance. There's about 5 other applications and none rely on time as they're more generative and sequential. However, I can get it to around 10-12ms. Not all music is meant to be performed.
I looked at the site for the software for this (been doing my research) and im not quite sure if i like it does it have the capability to control windows itself? just a question since youve obviously used it
