They are tearing down and buying out all the "ghetto" areas by campus just like they did at UCLA and USC. I go to UCR and it is a bomb school. It's in the middle of everything, and the city itself has a low cost of living. It's still a UC so the education is amazing. Sure, there are good and bad teachers at UCR just like any other school you go to, but overall, UCR is the shiznat! :]
What UCR has going for it is relatively low cost of living. Every other UC is in very expensive neighborhoods which make it very hard on the average student. Riverside is very cheap compared to the other campuses. That's why I went there for awhile until we moved. And the campus has great places to study, which was perfect for me as an older student, my party days are pretty much done. But college may be a waste now. WAY too expensive and it'll be hard to pay back the 40k in student loans.
Im probably going there, mainly because of the medical school that will open in 2012. Its going to be good.. Its paired up with UCLA's medical school and we all know that its great.
Riverside is a safe and friendly city, haha. Very untrue. It gets pretty ghetto in some places. The Canyon Crest shopping center area right by campus is really nice though. I want to move over there for next year.
Its pretty easy, Riverside is safe as long as you stay out of the northside and CB other than that its pretty much just the ghetto ass apartments on olivewood. they need to shut down the low income programs and push that shit to mo val and back to LA. I would have to say Riverside is alot safer than LA, we dont have as many gangs or areas like south central.
@volcom4380 You forgot a few areas: arlanza, hill side and east downtown and downtown too and rubidoux. One of the best ways to tell is with a simple question: if you are a parent, which high school would you feel safe sending your teens to? They all have gangs, drugs and you name it. From Ramona to Poly to North to La Sierra and all the rest.
So i was really bummed out about going to UCR...but ever since i got here this September I have been having the best time of my life...there have been soo many parties...Princeton Review calls UCR 6th most boring school in the nations...but it's really not...UCR gives the most financial aid out of any UC...i'm paying $911 a quarter for everything and i'm having a great time...if you are debating between a cal state and UCR definately choose UCR...people talk a lot of crap but that's cause they
...Dude, UCR will skyrocket in the ranking system when the medical school is opened. people should reconsider this school from now on...it's not that lame anymore...
@hinduman123456789 im exactly in that situation, i dont know if i should transfer to UC Riverside or Fresno State. I have been to Fresno State many times and i kind of like the campus and the city, I havent been to Riverside so i have no idea how the campus might look like. is it a safe city? I'm interested in UCR because of the potential financial aid they can provie me there. is the weather extreme during the summer? how about winter? does it get cold? Please reply!
@norcaljorge Riverside and Fresno are pretty similar. Dry, dusty and hot, very hot! The problem is that the UC's are jacking up tuition over 30% this year and who knows how much in the near future. So are the CalState's. I'm not sure college is the way to go anymore, unless you get mega scholarships.
But as far as the city is concerned, it's not entirely safe. High drug usage, gangs and lots of crime. But if you stay close to campus, you should be okay. Downtown is cool, quiet. I liked it.
Hey, this is for the guy or gal who had messaged me and mentioned that s/he is coming for a visit in early april. I am so sorry that i have accidentally deleted you message so i can't reply u. could u pls send me the message again? I would love to get in touch with u.
p.s. good luck with Berkeley, they rejected me :(, i hope your luck is better than mine
Did he just say "safe and friendly city" when speaking about Riverside? *falls over laughing* NO! It's not friendly and definately not safe! Coming from someone who was born and raised in Riverside, this is not the truth.
I mean, there are BETTER parts... but safe? I don't think so. I'm in the Orangecrest area and I'm scared to walk out front after dark! In this area, my brother had his car broken into before it was finally stolen... about 6 times in a year. There have been home invasions too very recently (last year too). Don't get me wrong, I love Riverside... just make sure you never leave your house unarmed :p
Nah, it's really not that bad. The city has changed a lot over the years though. There are pros and cons, but as a school, UCR is great. The area has its good and bad. The street that runs by one side of it (University) is known for prostitution and drug deals. Would you be getting an apartment or living on campus? If you're serious about going, I can give you some details about places to rent, places to hang out, etc :D
hey, i will probably go there for grad school this year, sure love to hear some suggestions from you on places to rent and places to hang out. i am also really concerned about the saftey issues, is it really that bad?
There's a new apartment structure near the 215 freeway that looks great. There are actually many apartments within walking distance. In terms of hanging out, you have 2 Starbucks (yes 2) in the local University Village (right next to UCR). There are a few malls not too far away (like the Tyler and Moreno Valley) and a new (restored) area (Riverside Plaza) that has shopping, restaurants, and a movie theater.
Things do happen in and around the campus. Honestly, I don't think it's much worse than any other Universities though (UCLA is probably worse). As long as you use common sense, don't walk around alone (especially at night), be aware of your surroundings, then I think you'll be fine.
Also... it's honestly better in terms of living cost than a lot of other UC schools (like Irvine and such). They actually just built a new really nice apartment near the campus that seems like it would be affordable.
Sorry for the late reply. Thank you so much for the info., esp. the ones on housing. I wonder if you also know any local websites providing rental service for apartments. I am currently not in the States, and probably won't come until mid-August. Yet I would love to find an apartment right when i arrive so it would save me the trouble of moving around in mid. of the term. tks ^-^
Hey there, sorry for my late reply :( I've been working and going to school full time, haven't been online much. There are many websites that offer apartment leasing info: Apartments, Forrent, and Move (.com for all of them). I don't know if you're going to get a deal from the websites though. You should contact the school to see if they have a waiting list for the school apartments. :) Hope I could be of some help.
