what are you using for an arresting cable- i designed a system similar to a real arresting cable for a friends school project- it was able applied force equal to that of the planes energy on landing. in other words- a light small plane would be "grabbed"with less force than a heavy fast one- and it didn't recoil until it was activated to recoil- it was a damper/ recoil system that cost about $25 to make and it fit flush under 3/4" plywood used for deck- i'm not an rc guy but email 4 info
I tried a rubber cord first, but it causes the plane to get jerked backwards. Check out my video called "Parkzone T-28 Trojan Carrier Trap Ground" to see what I mean.
Yeah i have been following all your hook vids but still compared to the suddened stop you have now, i think a small recoil will be better and by controling the throttle, i think that recoil can be eliminated.
Do it man! I'd love to see what you've got in mind. I'm working on the hook setup for my T-45 EDF jet. My main focus has been better landing gear, but an improved trap wouldn't hurt. Show me what you mean and you never know I might try it. Someone suggested trying to land on a 4x8 piece of plywood once and I gave it a shot. Didn't really work, but I tried :o) I'm not really sure how to eliminate the recoil of rubber. Full scale uses steel cables. What's you idea for no recoil?
hahah we have a similar cause, im flying a f 15 jet that weight 2 lbs coming at around 60mph and needs to stop in less then 75 ft.
What i mean was on the full scale, the pilot tags the hook and then goes almost WOT because if he misses, he can just take off again. With our scale, im thinking that we come in "slow, hit the line and as soon as the rubber line pulls taunt and starts to recoil, put the motor on and slowly ease is off.
There is no recoil full scale. I can't explain the physics in the 500 words YouTube allows, but trust me that after you hit a rubber cord the recoil is more than what WOT will be able to compensate. It's all about the laws of momentum. Honestly I would be very surprised if your 2 lb F-15 is going 60 mph during landing. My jet tops out just over 60 mph. When hooking I try to fly just above stall speed. It should be easy to stop your plane in 75'. You could stop it in 10' at that weight.
Are you sure because almost every vid i see, the plane rolls a foot back after hitting the hook. Ahh good old physics with momentum and impulse. Yes but by my calculations it makes sense that there is recoil unless there is a factor i forgot.
The only reason mine will come in around that speed is extremely high wing loading and an extremely far back cg.
@Berzert Could you explain to me the whole system of your arresting gear and your tail hook? I have a Trojan also and I'm very interested in doing this.
This is freaking annoying! Every time I look at T-28's, it shows freaking RC planes and sims. WTF

It'll be cool if you could do a chase plane cam on another rc plane in the air!

What kind of onboard camera are you using? I want to put one on my plane too, but haven't got a clue what to use?

have you thought about using surgical tubing??? It more elastic and thicker for smoother deceleration and easier catch.

Even full scale have recoil and is it really bad?

I've started a thread on RC Groups titled "Carrier Landings with EDF's" if you want to chip in. Easier to discuss there.

I dont see a antenna wire hanging from the back of your plane. I hate seeing that on an RC. What do you with it?
tkrahlin 2 years ago
I use a Spektrum DX6i, 2.4 GHz radio, so there isn't a long wire. The antennas are about an inch long.
