It has a distinctive flavor because it's produced by people from another culture, not because it's a foreign form. I hear, 4/4 drums, bass, guitar riffs, and leads!!! When you speak of good ol' anime, it conjures to the mind of Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, and Vampire Hunter D. As far as I know, the noses have always been very small throughout anime. Notable exceptions are abundant, but they are usually reserved for men. Different hair color is a very easy and effective means of keeping characters well recognizable. I am still trying to guess as to what anime you would consider "good ol". Perhaps you can enlighten me?
