As big a fan of James Brown that I am, I never ever liked her voice. It's way to shrilly to enjoy it. I read that Mr. Brown wanted her to sing that way and she hated it. Whatever the reason, I simply cannot enjoy anything she sings and every James Brown fan I know in my personal life seems to think the same way.
@PaulDA2000, I have to agree with you. He did like them shrill. As much as I love JB's music, IMHO, he had a very strange taste in female vocalists. Even when Tammi Terrell sang a song that he wrote (I Cried) , I would not have bought her record. However, when she started singing with Marvin Gaye, she was alright (I think that I concentrated on MG's voice).
@mjjcng8958 bobby womack wrote and sang it first, chaka sang it next then vickie...she even sings towards the end of the song that she's not chaka khan she's vickie anderson.
no im 17 yrs old and excuse my langauge but this is my shiddddd!! this is vici anderson not CHAKA sh sung back up for james rown for those who dnt know!! 72 is the yr itcam out I think. May not been bron in that time but GOOD MUSIC S GOOD MUSIC !!
@shelovesrb7777 I appreciate this one as well ... I like Rufus' and this one. This one has a different texture to it .... rougher.... Rufus' is Jazzier.... and Both of them i enjoy better than Womack's. Chaka's version is effortless as this is her own restyling. Vicki had to reach on a few notes but she got there .. LOL
Um....Of course! I am Chaka's BIGGEST fan, but UM! Who in the HELL! Would compare THIS version to THAT ONE!?!?!? Just BE REAL???I don't liek the off beatness they have going on and it sounds like it's rushed and was not well organized...No good! COMPARED! To Rufus's version...sorry
Ya'll CrAzY!!......You know dog-on well NOBODY....and I mean nobody can do it like Rufus! Chaka's vocals are not to be reckoned with!......stop playin'.
I have Message to the Soul Sisters and as soon as I gat my shit together I'll puttin it on here along with alot of other classics that aint here either...
In his autobio (I think) James Brown said that Vicki was the best singer (in comparison to Aretha and others) I love Aretha, so I have to listen to Vicki's voice a little longer . She is great though.
Interesting to see the love for my relative... Perhaps it will inspire her to do new things! Yes, she does have an amazing voice and she is completely under-rated...
Chaka took it from Bobby womack and owned it, then Vickie snatched it from Chaka and owned it ! lol ... I like this one and chakas. Who's the male on this track?
Chaka borrowed it from Bobby she will never own anything Bobby wrote lol. Bobby's was gritter, Chaka had a feminine funk. Both versions have their own audience. That's like saying Newbirth took "I can't understand it". Though they really took it to another level. Bobby had the lowdown soulful sound that noone can take.
Your difference of opinion has been noted. i've always appreciated bobby's songwriting over his vocals. I'm sure his voice appeals to many. I only like certain songs of his. Where do we go from here, if you think youre lonely, harry hippie, woman's gotta have it. Another instance of someone covering his song successfully is Millie Jackson's I'm through trying to prove my love to you.

The male background vocalist sounds like Bobby Byrd. Does anyone know for
Sure? Marva Whitney was my favorite female vocalist that performed with
James Brown.
