  • how much did carrier iq pay you to glorify their spying software? you promote carrier iq to be "benign" but in all fairness... the one's that say it is benign have ties to the intelligence community. The fact remains that the carries and the carrier iq company have integrated the firmware of phones with this "spyware", which it is, and they have done it in a clandestine manner, never notifying you with a warning of it or an opt-out of the service, and also, made it next to impossible to remove

  • They only "experts" who have said Carrier IQ does not or cannot do what Trevor has proven have ties to the US intelligence community, in particular the NSA. One of them was an NSA spook for Christ sake! This is the same NSA that has been spying on the American people for decades illegally so I am really going to trust these supposed experts. Ever hear of Echelon or the Patriot Act? Echelon as a program was proven NSA spying on us illegally. The Patriot Act just made it supposedly legal to do so.

  • Why do companies who have this power get away with doing these things and not get in serious trouble for invasion of privacy and potential security threats?

  • Good job on being up CIQ's ass

  • You suck

  • ... the same old difference between "security tool" and "hacking tool"

  • My only concern, benign or not, is that owners are not asked to opt-in for this, we are not able to turn it off...unless we root of course.

  • also i live in canada we would have to sign a 3 year contract for iphone or android to get it cheap, so you have it better then i do already :)

  • So, I need to sign two years of my life to a cell phone plan, after I sign a document a mile long. Just to find out I'm being tracked and my information being sold for a service I have to pay for. After I find something shady like CarrierIQ my provider will point out one line in my agreement that lets them do it. The line reads “We can do whatever we want including and not limited to selling your soul for a Smartphone plan you will pay a premium for, solely for our unadulterated profit.“

  • @Samsung19852011 oh come on, when you say you sign your life away for 2 years, i call BS, you could have any phone, you dont have to sign up for a contract. they dont hold a gun to your head and say you have to, if you still want a iphone, or android phone you can purchase it outright. you would be using the cell phone for the 2 years with or without a contract so to get a cheap phone u sign a contract. yes carrier iq sucks but im glad i dont have it on my iphone 4s/ios5. :)

  • Chris, you hit the nail on the head. Full transparency from the carriers and the device manufactures about how data is being collected and used is needed and should be demanded by all users.

  • If you are the least bit interesting to an agency. I promise they are seeing everything you are doing. Not sure if that's a bad thing but that's what things like this are for. The select few, but how select is it really?

  • Dogs are man's best friends as spellcheckers are geek's best friend.

  • Ha! Fissixuss, no wait, Phisicus,,, Wasn't that a type of soup that Alfred gave to Bruce Wayne in one of the movies???

    PS: "Vichisua"... Thanx Google!

  • Patriot Act anyone? That means "big brother" can gain access to this information and track your every move, every keyboard stroke, everywhere you go. Benign my ass...

  • Glad you are all over this whether it is or isn't spyware that is bigbrother it is good to know there are people like you and Eckhart. That DO something, not just sit back and talk shit in the comments section like they did the legwork

  • You are the dumbest, quite possibly retarded, person I have ever heard speak....Ever.

  • does tablets that run android have it?

  • @bossman12334

yes. i just checked, and my galaxy tab has CIQ.

and that's why presently i'm looking for a CIQ-free rom for my tab...

  • Won't be long before all the angry apple fanboys start trolling all the Android users by saying: "Carrier IQ runs BETTER on iOS because Carrier IQ is more stable when running in iOS!"

  • big brothers watching us

  • what is a good anti virus for mac os x 10.6

  • @faizanjoyia Mac OS X itself is the best virus protector.

  • Chris, I remember watching the video of you showing the apple log yesterday, and called it 'jargon.' Far from it. The information isn't read by humans (that would be tedious!). It's processed by algorithms which are capable of extracting specific parts of the jargon into a nice readable format; this is done within milliseconds.

Hence to call thousands (even millions) of lines of data 'jargon,' is seriously missing the point.

  • You know what.... I really don't care if they are looking at what I'm doing on my phone.... I really don't.

  • It's weird what info people are worried about. Key logger? Really? Upon sign up you give these companies your ssn your bank info your address. But they get your Facebook password and everyone freaks out.

  • Thumbs up if you tried spelling facetious....

  • Chris needs to point out, it's ONLY A PROBLEM FOR PEOPLE IN THE US! Anywhere else in the world... this software doesn't exit on your phone!

  • So its Android and Windows Phone 7 thats this crap is on?

  • Even if this is the case, i still don't like the fact that they COULD do that, because this software is installed. I don't want it.

  • WP7 FTW!!!

  • I have a windows phone Bitches at Carrier IQ!!

  • I wonder if ppl are not going to figure out how to hack the Carrier IQ software. That's the scary part.

  • This is going to be around until there is a GNU phone OS.

  • The problem is, there is proof that they have the ABILITY to collect this information. The whole reason awareness is being raised is because the customers do not have the ability to opt out of this. Irregardless of who is to blame, this needs to be addressed. An opt out option is a MUST that should be provided by carriers. You say it yourself... MIGHT not. Nobody knows. I'm very glad it is becoming an issue with customers and I'm glad you yourself are raising awareness.

  • @qbking77 True, who knows what happens with it and how the data is encrypted when its sent. If it is in fact data that is not personalized to the user (i.e. contacts, sms, mms) It should still have decent encryption. There should be imposed limits to the software as well instead of it having access to everything as it seems on android.

  • @ACSMezz101 Something else not being addressed by these "independent security experts" or the iPhone guy in this video is that the level of access accorded to Carrier IQ is extremely unusual for a third-party app. I don't know if any of these people have done any programming, but third-party apps almost never interface with the OS the way Carrier IQ does. Moreover, the complete lack of any benefit offered by this software makes its presence worthless. So, why do we need it?

  • @radiosant Report crashes during a call to the provider.

  • @qbking77 Any program that you type text into logs your keystrokes. Uninstall those. Your web browser knows what urls you visit and the data it, uninstall that. They're always going to have the ability to collect information. It's an input device. HOw about you just cancel your contract, change your name to plays with squirrels, move out into the wilderness and marry a moose.

  • @qbking77 If you don't want something with the ABILITY to collect this information, go to Home Depot, buy yourself a nice red brick and just send me your phone. I'll take care of it for you. "Ability" crap you speak of is nonsense. It's what data is actually being recorded and/or transmitted that matters. Mr. Echkart does not even know how SSL works. I knew he was full of shit 3 minutes into his video.

  • Call it what you want. The OWNER of the phone should have to OPT in by default. Not opt out. Secondly, if the default is the user having to opt out, why don't users have the choice to opt out? Why force carrier IQ on your customers? Makes no sense really. Aleast when you buy an HTC phone, they give you the option to send HTC error reports. You choose weather you want to to this or not right on the first boot up. Why isn't carrier IQ this way?

  • AND I DONT CARE!

  • AND IM SECOND BITCHES!

  • IM FIRST BITCHES
