This bald guy is doing his best considering that when the camera is off those kids act like spoiled shits and that co-teacher probably sits in the back of the class checking her text messages. Yeah, this guy is a dork, but that is what the Koreans want.
Hey you back-seat drivers, can you tell me when it was fun back in your junior/senior high when the teacher was seriously lecturing the full period? Since they can't understand his jokes, this is the only way to entertain. I've seen even more exaggerated cases than this. Foreigners are hired because they are more outgoing so the kids can get excited about English. Notice how he is NOT lecturing to rocket scientists. Try to teach at Harvard and see how they grade your serious teaching style
Keep in mind he could be putting on a show only because of the camera. I've had to do that a few times with open classes - just project an image that Everything Is Ok and the Kids Are Learning Something and the curriculum is Just Super.
This guy represents everything that's wrong with the education system in Korea. Please, please do not emulate this. This guy is nothing more than a performing monkey. If you want to be a clown, put on a red nose and join the circus. Tossers like this mean when we turn up at a school we are expected to jump about entertaining the little princes rather than actually teach them something. This guy must be a frustrated comedian or something.
Most schools WANT us to act like monkeys and be entertaining. They want us to inject some fun into it. They honestly don't want us to be serious teachers. That's just the truth. Ddong face!
This is the sort of classroom set up that intimidates me. I don't really want to go anywhere unless it's less than 12 students and taught in a comfy room, or at least in a circle rather than facing a desk.
Korean teachers teach the grammar and prepare most of the lessons. Native English speakers are there to communicate with the kids, read from text/story books and help with pronunciation and conversational English.
You gotta have a degree to teach in Korea!!! They dont play. Ive been all over Asia and I cant teach in Korea.
Which is bullshit actually because when you meet these fuckin teachers and talk to them you'll see that they dont have a fuckin degree in what they are teaching!!!
I'm 90% ready to apply to teach in South Korea, but there'es one thing I just dont get, and that the websites tend not to clarify.
How exactly do you communicate with the little korean kids when they dont know English and you dont know Korean? How do you talk? How do you teach? I just dont get it.
Honestly its a bit intimidating at first but you define things ostensively at first, introduce a few key phrases (translated to Korean) and start to build. Young kids minds are sponges and if you're creative and ethusiastic they will learn a lot very quickly. And its incredibly rewarding. If you need any tips - just drop me a line!
@StarKrazzo hello, i know you posted from over a year ago, but did you ever succeed in getting a teaching job in korea? would you tell me a little about your experiences? i have the exact same concerns as you did, and would like to know how you overcame them!

@raydeen1 actually, when the person who is supposed to be teaching you is acting that way, its very distracting and takes away from learning.

Note: He just gave prizes. This wasn't an actual lesson. Dear god...what would it have been like?

Oh my goat. Is he trying to be Jim Carey or something? How embarrasing if Korean people think every English person is like that.
