One the first bands I ever heard on record. I was 6 when The Nice were in their pomp. My brother had "NIce Enough To Eat". They were mindblowing. After "How MUch Is That Doggy IN THe Window". Bands like this were mindblowing..The sixties was a musical and cultural revolution. I went on to follow The Punk movement. Nothing after these type of bands made me me take notice
Always loved this song, since I first heard it from Ellen McIlwaine & Jack Bruce, I never knew till today that The Nice played it, or who wrote it (Tim Hardin), even though I'm a fan of Keith Emerson & The Nice, actually have Emerlist DaveJack on vinyl, love Rondo, 5 Bridges, etc, Still I think Ellen & Jack version defines this beautiful song.
I saw them a lot at this time. it was bad seeing their fairfield hall croydon concert march 22nd 1970 which I believe was their last london performance before they split up in april.
harsh words radical systems from your yank friend from the states. I love this song and I love Keith still to this day after 40 years of listening to him
hat can I say, she's walking away From what we've seen What can I do, still loving you It's all a dream How can we hang on to a dream How can it ever be the way it seems What can I do, she's saying we're through With how it was What will I try, I still don't see why She says what she does
Lee Jackson & Brian Davison, best bass & drum pairing ever! What a trajedy Refugee never got chance to realise their potential, they should have been Huge!!
Jazz interpretation? Sorry but not really...clearly fine chops but Emerson's soloing has no narrative to it - it lurches from one explosive set-piece to another. Like a bad action movie.
Its interesting to note that during their final tour of America they were playing on a double bill with King Crimson and that's how Emerson and Lake met. I can definitely hear the foundation that was laid for ELP in the Nice.
saw these guys play this in a tiny club in Toronto in 69. all of us sitting crossed legged on the floor. Imagine our amazement, despite having two Nice albums at home.
I like this version better than the album version. The base has a stronger presence, and it has the passion that only comes from their live performances.
Jackson's vocal is effectively plaintive here, and Emerson's sharp left turn into jazz territory for his piano solo is a brilliant bit of late 60s pop inventiveness. Always thought that this was the most adventurous version of a classic that has been covered by a multitude of artists.
Wow! And please don't get angry with me for my own personal opinion but to me, compared to Tim Hardin's original, I really, really dislike this! I think it's awful! Although Tim's is one of the most beautiful, heartfelt and painful recordings ever.
@AllMalt711 although tim hardin wrote the original,,i like this due to keiths piano and improvisation...its not meant to replace tims..but another take on it..and i like the way it builds...
saying that this is awful is not the right word, you are free dislike somthing but this is great musicians!! its like saying that Monk was a retard just couse you don't like jazz.
@AllMalt711 Different mood. Only thing I would critique is the bass player's vocals on it. You don't hear the words or singing per se. I never really cared for the vocals by him in the band.
Other than that, a very good jazz interpretation. Can't beat Keith Emerson.
As this great drummer said the rythym flows from the feet, who needs drumsticks....great keybords..great base and vocals a masterpiece that will live forever..BBC John Peel and over 7mins long...
Emerson , lake and palmer recorded Hang onto a dream in 1993 for the return of the manticore with 21st century schizoid man (king crimson) and Fire from Arthur Brown, These version and other rare material are only in this box set.
This box set is DELETED , I think , years ago. I Like specially ELP´S perfomance of ``hang onto a dreamo´´I think this answer resolves this question.
I saw the Nice in 1968 this is thier song they were so much better and fresher then ELP also Rondo was thier recording K Emerson was so much better with the nice
I like both Elp and the nice , but I agree with you , especially in Rondo because Lee does a terrific bass guitar figure that Greg never could do . Your were a Lucky man and could see the nice Live . They disbanded when I was six.
I was going to Art School in NYC 1967-1971 and saw all the great British bands in small venues i.e. Savoy brown (with Chris Youlden ) the Nice Cream Fleetwood Mac with Peter Greene Traffic with Dave Mason and Steve Winwood my friend worked as an usher @ the Filmore East and it was great
Sorry this song was never part of an ELP set that I have ever heard of. It was a song that the Nice did. ELP was famous for reproducing Rondo by the Nice, I do not believe that ELP ever did Hang on to a Dream?? Comments on this, from any ELP fan that may know more than myself??
I discovered ELP in 1990 and went to the subsequent concert where it was played live so I just assumed it was on the alums somewhere.. That was their Hot Seat concert in Dallas, TX.
Ah, mystery solved. Actually, that was the good thing about ELP, their live shows included songs not necessarily recorded in the studio. Or, songs that were recorded but for live albums. Oh, if you're familiar with Pictures at an Exhibition but not the first release they did (back in 1971), check it out as it includes a song (The Gnome by Greg Lake, classical guitar solo from him on it) not featured in other Pictures versions including the one on Hot Seat.
Ah! I found it. Not only did I enoy it live but I taped it and it was also released exclusively on their box set. I will post it here in a few days when I have time. It's the "Old" Greg lake but very appropriate.
Me bad, the song is The Sage, written by Lake but if you found it, great.
Actually, it;'s part of the first performance by ELP of Pictures as recorded live and released as their 3rd album (after ELP and Tarkus) called "Pictures at an Exhibition). It's probably the best and rockiest and bluesiest of all the versions they did later. Anyway, pick it up for the complete concert. It also featured their encore The Nutrocker.
This was the way live recordings should be,unedited with roaring crowd.
angelicb4me - Nice to see a female who likes prog; used to see ELP on tv around the time they did Knife Edge in the 70's - Emerson is brilliant. Wish I met a girl that liked prog back then (or even now).
I love Lee Jackson's bass playing.. especially when the violin bow comes out! A Vox teardrop bass, nobody else really played them as extensively as good old Lee, and what a sound!
chetlamm-i am female-yes prog rock seems to be a male domain, but there are some of us still with you guys. saw crimson, elp when i was 16/17 before they went BIG-still saw EMO climb up into the hammond, stick the knives etc. i,v always loved them. girlfriend got me into nice but i'v 4gotten, who SANG this originally? or the well-known version.
It was while listening to music such as this when I realized that I'd never, ever be as good a musician as I wished to be. So I put away my guitar and became a computer programmer.
Such a conservative brashly Comment! Dont waste ur time spending it on good music and musicians videos like this!!! You probably listen to techno and think your a fair minded fan of good music... Ridiculous!
please god of you tube dont let stupid 15 year old yanks on pages like this with theor 'faggot' ,lame, gay, sucks, bollox...and usa rules..let me have at least one yt page thats free from idiot twats...and please no more 'these fguys ripped off xxxx (some shit band who came out 20 years later!!)
My thoughts are that this song is beautiful - I really like it. I also listen to a world of other music. Everything from The Smiths to Moonspell and so on...
- and yet, I'm only a kid, just 15 years old. Don't let people down because of their age... at least, not all the time. I understand you in some way. Mostly, we're just messing with the world until we grow out some realistic, more wise-full eyes.
I'm a 56 Year Old Yank who has been enjoying Keith Emerson Keyboard Wizardry for over 40 Years since I first heard Him played on Progressive WNEW FM 102.7 Mhz Radio in New York City with legendary DJ's Scott Muni, Jonathan Scharwtz, Dennis Elsas, Pete Fornatale, and Allison Steele the Night Bird.. Thanks to whoever for posting this.
@radicalsystems ahh i agree you im 13 and all my classmates are listening to shit rap, pop, hiphop and other shit.im fan of 70th rock and love progressive rock very much.i play on keyboards my favorite keyboardist is keith emerson i love ray manzarek and jon lord too but keith is genious
All you have to do is be able to feel." quote from Art Blakey, Brian's hero. Blinky" passed away on April 15th.A major talent, an unsung innovator, and a spectacular (and tasteful) percussionist. He will always be remembered by those he has touched through his music and personality. Rest in peace, Brian "Blakey" Davison.
yes it is, true emerson had gotten back together with the nice for some concerts in recent years since elp dont get along and each guy has his own group
I'm looking for a clean, maybe digitally remastered recording of "Five Bridges" or "Flower King of Flies". My original LP is so scratched up. Anyone have a clue? Appreciate it!! This is great to listen to again! Thanks
Im not saying elp were a bad group or produced nothing good, as I saw them a lot when they began. its a subjective thing and hard to define, but the change in direction of elp seemed to symbolise the changing musical zeitgeist of the 70s, eg. pink floyd going from whimsical pschedelic optimism to concept albums and paranoia. Its probably because I so enjoyed the way the nice interacted in a smaller scale intimate way that I was a bit disappointed with elp, but maybe Ive put this too harshly.
was a huge fan of ELP/Nice still am if I am honest I look back on the output of ELP and I feel self indulgent overlong solos reduced the appeal of the band. Zeitgeist god knows I have enough dated concept albums lurking which in the light of day dated and are not making trip across into the car I now agree with John Peel a waste of talent and electricity they had the ability to be so much more. have you heard the band from the ashes of the Nice Refugee- Ritt Mickley now thats conceptual
Isn't it a shame that the bass player and drummer had their bands end on two occasions (ELP, Refugee) because their keyboard player left? Seems like wasted talent to me :(
I have to say that this clip reminds me of the magical creative and powerful experience it was seeing the nice. I was watching elp s early performances waiting for that inspiration to happen, which it never did for me. elp symbolised the increasing brashness and commercialisation of the 70 s and became an easy target for the know it all buzzcoks stereotypers and denigraters where prog is the pigeonholling putdown term thrown at you by people who never experienced the creative days of the nice .
Actually ELP were a good group if you give them a chance, they have some good songs and it isn't commercial compared to a lot of what other bands were doing at the time. So they deserve some credit fan or not.
I saw The Nice several times through 68/69 at the Marquee Club in Wardour St. and I wouldn't hesitate to say that after Dave O' List left the band they were never the same.(i.e. as good.) Musically they needed a guitarist to flesh out the sound. Check out their one and only hit single "America" to see what I mean.
I just dicovered YouTube and there are so many great artists on here. I've always considered Keith Emerson to be one of the most innovative and accomplished keyboard artists of all time. This was exciting and enjoyable to see and listen to..
Had a chat with Lee today! His very cut up about Brian! Lee went to see Brian just before he died But brian didnt recognise him, he was too ill........
I've never been a big fan of The Nice - ELP were the first for me, and The Nice wasn't sonething new or unexpected. Bu I always liked their music. The first thing of them I heard was The Five Bridges Suite...
I knew that Brian was very unwell during the last time, but I didn't want believe that he was SO unwell... really sad news! :(((((
I also hadn't heard about Brian's passing...if true, I am at least glad he had a chance to do the reunion concerts a few years ago..The Nice were my favorite band of all time.
Being 25, i discovered ELP 1st, then the Nice. Only have the 1st Nice album vs. 4 ELP albums. Just ordered Elgy from Amazon. Looking forward to hear it. BTW, Brian Davidson you will be missed
I see Lee Jackson nearly every day! he delivers to my firm! He still performs and is a really nice guy! I always tease him, saying that Lemmy from Motorhead made it bigger than him! Lemmy used to be Lee Jacksons Roadie with the Nice Before the Motorhead Days....
Lemmy isn't even on the same level of musicianship. He couldn't play this if he tried. Its sad all the shitty musicians seem to make it big anymore. :(
And don't miss REFUGEE 'Refugee'(1974).It has been recorded by Lee Jackson and Brian Davison of The Nice plus Patric Moraz on kybds.Truely FENOMENAL!!!
(Hope this isn't a pickup line). Don't know how they effect roaches, but they certainly don't repel me. Emerson's music with ELP is an effective merger of Apollo and Dionysus, intelligence and instinct, with an underlying sensitivity and a healthy dose of evil humor, a most thrilling musical roller coaster ride, anything BUT repelling.
Lee Jackson one of a few left handed base players who also does vocals along with the likes of Paul Mccartney,Brian(Blinky)Davison(the percusion of the soul)Keith Emerson keyboard wizard and composer. This trio should have been the first super group
Lovely chords on the basic song. The Jazz solo was a bit long and the singer, well, too low!! Kith`s tinkering with the piano strings didn`t work nor did Jackson`s violin bass....but full credit for the experimentation. Was someone called O`list with the Nice? Did they have a lead guitarist?
Davey O'List was lead guitarist and back up vocalist until 1989. He was fired from the band because of his increasing drug habit. He was out of it, much like Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd. Iga, Thanks for posting this... I'd not seen a performance by The Nice before this,
you wont hear this stuff on TV/RADIO anymore - BUT thanks to youtube it gets re-aired so thank new technology for this at least and put two fingers up for what we what to really hear
In thirty years, I've heard The Nice on the radio twice. They don't play the good stuff on the radio. Just the same tired crap you hear all the time. This is where you can hear the good stuff.
Maybe we should just keep plugging sites such as this, and, purely on a music basis to be able to broadcast without constraint. I've merely skimmed the surface of this site but I've seen good postings of stuff that never gets broadcasted elsewhere removed for no reason at all, because maybe someone suddenly wants to make an extra buck from a 40 year old recording. That's all rather sad really.
There is this little copyrights issue :-). BTW, the only Keith Emerson related videos I've seen removed from Youtube were from TV shows - the TV companies removed them, not the artists. The Internet is great for music, for anything that doesn't get exposure elsewhere. It revived prog. Emerson Band's new album should be released in July or August. Hope he returned to prog and that maybe some justice is done.
When I was a boy I would read about my heroes previous adventures (in this case, the fact-not more than that was available-that Emerson had played with agroup called The Nice). 30 years later, YouTube allows me to learn what Nice was actually about!
10 years ago I playes this song with my band. Stil the hardest Piano-Solo I ever did :-) Great Memories, great tune!

What a waste of great talent by using the fine jazz chops of Brian 'Blinky'

It was while listening to music such as this when I realized that I'd never, ever be as good a musician as I wished to be. So I put away my guitar and became a computer programmer.

well if you think this is good music then i think it was a good decision to abandon your plans of becoming a musician yourself

I heard somewhere that Brian Davison died recently. Can somebody tell me if that's true or not?

Im not saying elp were a bad group or produced nothing good, as I saw them a lot when they began. its a subjective thing and hard to define, but the change in direction of elp seemed to symbolise the changing musical zeitgeist of the 70s, eg. pink floyd going from whimsical pschedelic optimism to concept albums and paranoia. Its probably because I so enjoyed the way the nice interacted in a smaller scale intimate way that I was a bit disappointed with elp, but maybe Ive put this too harshly.
puddypuss 3 years ago
was a huge fan of ELP/Nice still am if I am honest I look back on the output of ELP and I feel self indulgent overlong solos reduced the appeal of the band. Zeitgeist god knows I have enough dated concept albums lurking which in the light of day dated and are not making trip across into the car I now agree with John Peel a waste of talent and electricity they had the ability to be so much more. have you heard the band from the ashes of the Nice Refugee- Ritt Mickley now thats conceptual
delwatts 3 years ago 2
Isn't it a shame that the bass player and drummer had their bands end on two occasions (ELP, Refugee) because their keyboard player left? Seems like wasted talent to me :(
rezlax31 3 years ago 3
I have to say that this clip reminds me of the magical creative and powerful experience it was seeing the nice. I was watching elp s early performances waiting for that inspiration to happen, which it never did for me. elp symbolised the increasing brashness and commercialisation of the 70 s and became an easy target for the know it all buzzcoks stereotypers and denigraters where prog is the pigeonholling putdown term thrown at you by people who never experienced the creative days of the nice .
puddypuss 3 years ago
Actually ELP were a good group if you give them a chance, they have some good songs and it isn't commercial compared to a lot of what other bands were doing at the time. So they deserve some credit fan or not.

I'm sad to report that "Blinky" has passed away on April 15th. Rest in peace, Brian.
3bar 3 years ago
I saw The Nice several times through 68/69 at the Marquee Club in Wardour St. and I wouldn't hesitate to say that after Dave O' List left the band they were never the same.(i.e. as good.) Musically they needed a guitarist to flesh out the sound. Check out their one and only hit single "America" to see what I mean.

I just dicovered YouTube and there are so many great artists on here. I've always considered Keith Emerson to be one of the most innovative and accomplished keyboard artists of all time. This was exciting and enjoyable to see and listen to..

Being 25, i discovered ELP 1st, then the Nice. Only have the 1st Nice album vs. 4 ELP albums. Just ordered Elgy from Amazon. Looking forward to hear it. BTW, Brian Davidson you will be missed

I am always happy to see younger listeners who have an 'open' mind. I think you will enjoy The Nice...they were truly ahead of their time...

I see Lee Jackson nearly every day! he delivers to my firm! He still performs and is a really nice guy! I always tease him, saying that Lemmy from Motorhead made it bigger than him! Lemmy used to be Lee Jacksons Roadie with the Nice Before the Motorhead Days....
muddyfox4x4 3 years ago
Lemmy isn't even on the same level of musicianship. He couldn't play this if he tried. Its sad all the shitty musicians seem to make it big anymore. :(

Are there any females on this thread?
Some girl once said that ELP sounded "like a flopping fish in a bad nightmare".
Is she right ladies? Do women think that ELP and The Nice are an effective sonic roach repellant?
chetlamm 3 years ago
(Hope this isn't a pickup line). Don't know how they effect roaches, but they certainly don't repel me. Emerson's music with ELP is an effective merger of Apollo and Dionysus, intelligence and instinct, with an underlying sensitivity and a healthy dose of evil humor, a most thrilling musical roller coaster ride, anything BUT repelling.
steindard 3 years ago
The ladies song Greg Lake's acoustic ballads the he wrote for ELP. Or try Works Vol1, which has short songs. Which, in my opinion, are very good
JIF882 3 years ago
Wonderful. I am a 35-year fan and have never seen the Nice perform before. Not polished in parts, true, but stunning nevertheless.

Lee Jackson one of a few left handed base players who also does vocals along with the likes of Paul Mccartney,Brian(Blinky)Davison(the percusion of the soul)Keith Emerson keyboard wizard and composer. This trio should have been the first super group
okseagull83 3 years ago
Lovely chords on the basic song. The Jazz solo was a bit long and the singer, well, too low!! Kith`s tinkering with the piano strings didn`t work nor did Jackson`s violin bass....but full credit for the experimentation. Was someone called O`list with the Nice? Did they have a lead guitarist?
naychud 3 years ago
Davey O'List was lead guitarist and back up vocalist until 1989. He was fired from the band because of his increasing drug habit. He was out of it, much like Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd. Iga, Thanks for posting this... I'd not seen a performance by The Nice before this,

Oh my God How come I have never heard this band on the radio before? Even college stations dont play stuff this great!
ThemanfromZambodia 3 years ago
you wont hear this stuff on TV/RADIO anymore - BUT thanks to youtube it gets re-aired so thank new technology for this at least and put two fingers up for what we what to really hear
hambuns 3 years ago
In thirty years, I've heard The Nice on the radio twice. They don't play the good stuff on the radio. Just the same tired crap you hear all the time. This is where you can hear the good stuff.
3bar 3 years ago
Maybe we should just keep plugging sites such as this, and, purely on a music basis to be able to broadcast without constraint. I've merely skimmed the surface of this site but I've seen good postings of stuff that never gets broadcasted elsewhere removed for no reason at all, because maybe someone suddenly wants to make an extra buck from a 40 year old recording. That's all rather sad really.
hambuns 3 years ago
There is this little copyrights issue :-). BTW, the only Keith Emerson related videos I've seen removed from Youtube were from TV shows - the TV companies removed them, not the artists. The Internet is great for music, for anything that doesn't get exposure elsewhere. It revived prog. Emerson Band's new album should be released in July or August. Hope he returned to prog and that maybe some justice is done.
