Critical commentators should also consider that at the time of competition "Real" Bo were used in competition, not the Super Lightweight Bo used in the present. A Great Performance. Oneigashimasu.
'Too stiff'? It's not right. People, who saw only Yamanni-ryu and trust only Yamanni-ryu told that. Katherine has great strength, speed, dynamics. Judges of World Tournament were right. But Yamanni - NOT 'one and only true kobudo'.
Technical advices so fun ;) Yes, Inoe-ha uses shomen-uche from above the head. Probably, it's after kenjutsu etc influence. Other okinawan kobudo school use from above sholder. And it's more realistic from human body composition.
I noticed there is alot of critique on this page; I find the anonymous critiques that are ever-too-present on Youtube are unbecoming of a humble martial artist, and thus I will avoid making such narrow minded comments. I do have a question that is a reflection of my relative ignorance. I noticed Suki thrusts and her hooking blocks contain alot of hip gyration. I am unfamiliar with this style, and I am curious as to whether this is a personal interpretation of style. Inspiring performance! Osu.
Nice kata lady!! Don't listen to morons, there are several below starting with uminchu7th what ever the f.... that means. guarantee he/she is under 35.
well, she is strong as well as her techniques. i wonder why the jodan uchi is hit above the (right ) shoulder in this style. try it above yr head, it is much more difficult to execute with power. I like her and her performance as well. it is soooooo easy to critisize.
She is stiff and robotic, her Passai is good, at least it was a decade or two ago. As far as her being a sensei, I don't call anyone sensei, unless they can apply the technique.
Teaching technique is an imposters game, the ability to use your techniques against unexpected attack in a real environment is the real test, a test that about 95% of karate blackbelts never realized.. Know a technician and know a fighter.
This is a top clean and sober interpretation of a Ryukyu Kobudo Kata. Undifferentiated comparisons with Yamanni-ryu just show ignorance and lack of appreciation.
Johann-Sebastian Bach is played traditional by many. Yngwie Malmsteen, on the other hand, plays it way cooler, but not more traditional.
You're shanghai-ing of "Classic Okinawan Kobudo" in Yamanni's favour is a fallacy of logic.
I think practiconers of Yamani Ryu are insulting their own teachers by saying, 'this is not good, watch Nishime or Oshiro Sensei for real kobudo'.. Oshiro and Nishime sensei is very good. But, people must know the difference between Yamani Ryu's fluidity and other kobudo styles. Just commenting without knowledge is showing their stupidness only.. U mean Akamine or Matayoshi Kobudo is not good? Katherine Sensei may be little stiff.. But she has not to be fluid like Yamani Ryu at her school. tq
I don't see anyone stating that this isn't good. I just see people saying that this isn't a good demonstration of "Classic Okinawan Kobudo at it's best." Personally, I think it's ok. However, it isn't anything amazing. I would actually rather watch the Yamani guys.
I'm not refering just this video... In many videos Yamani Ryu guys commented in that way.. In what sense, this is not a Classic Okinawan Kobudo at its best? Yamani Ryu is another tradition... But, u telling Taira > Akamne Kobudo or Matayoshi Kobudo is not Classic Okinawan Kobudo at its best?
Katherine may look a bit "stiff" to some, but let me assure you, she is a dedicated and very solid karate-ka. She has good power and knows here stuff.
Excellent. Not stiff at all. Look at how she brings the power from the ground, thru her hips and into the weapon. That's great technique and clean all the way thru. This is classic okinawan kobudo at it's best, with circular movements yet powerful.
This is not classic Okinawan Kobudo at its best...watch Oshiro Toshihiro doing Shirataru on youtube...this is pretty much second rate as far as I'm concerned
I have seen him, he is one of the best ever. He is "masterful". She is not masterful and may not be as fluid as him, but to say this is second rate and stiff is an overstatement. Katas performed for tournament scoring typically are much less fluid than how they should be practiced because the performer "frames" the positions instead of flowing with the kata the way you are supposed to. For a tournament kata, this is very good. Watch the top WKF performers and you will see what I mean.
I see your point in regards to Tournaments however your original comment "Classic Okinawan Kobudo at it's best" does not describe this kata. For modern tournaments..bravo. For true classical Okinawan Kobudo, Nishime Sensei and Oshiro Sensei have the best Okinawan BO technique I have EVER witnessed. Both have videos on youtube last time I checked..take a look for a true glimpse of speed, fluidity, and power.
It doesn't have to be the best EVER to be classic okinawan kobudo. I stand by my original opinion and disagree with the categorization of "second rate". Obviously, all the judges that have scored her would also disagree with that categorization because of her successes. I have trained for over 30 years and I have also trained under and seen a lot of Okinawan Masters, and have a very vast frame of reference to make these comments. Well, we must agree to disagree but you can't argue with results.

Nice video, but what's up with all the cheering and yelling in the crowd? :S Isn't that a bit inappropriate when someone's performing a kata?
