FYI, the composer is actually Geminiano Giacomelli. It was attributed to Vivaldi for some time because he used it in 'Bajazet' - which was a pasticcio - but it was actually written by Giacomelli.
What a wonderful voice! If I had to describe my vision of being on a cloud, I would say that it is listening to Cecilia's' interpretation of this equal work of Art that is Vivaldi - Bajazets'- Sposa son disprezzata. It brings tears of joy everytime!
Her voice is flawless here. Such beauty, clarity...and a somber subtleness of tone, that really makes this piece heart-wrenching. It's not in anger, or hatred...it's just lament. Her pianissimo phrasing, is so clear and controlled, and it greatly heightens the air of sadness that this piece brings. Such crystalline lament, can only be produced by musicians of the highest quality, truly this an incredible rendition. Brings tears to my eyes, and shivers down my spine. Perfection!
What an amazingly beautiful rendition of this song! I've been going back and forth between her performance and one by Montserrat Caballe. I don't see how anyone could possibly say one is "better" than the other, just different and a matter of personal preference. Both are incredibly talented singers with beautiful voices.
@thomastmwc If your a Sopranos Fan from the HBO series there is a line in the show where this dialogue is spoken between Tony Soprano and Paulie. It is in a episode called "Pine Barrens" they used this song Sposa son disprezzata throughout the show it was tastefully done. Check it out Season 3 Sopranos Episode 11 "Pine Barrens" its kinda of gory but one of the highest rated shows in the series. Hope this helps.
I studied this aria long time ago, at the beginning i didn't like it. I was to young to understand. But now, thanks to Cecilia, i love this music. Very sad. She can act and sign so well.... I love her! And being italian helps a lot in studying music, expecially opera music ahahah i'm lucky ;)) Cecilia i love you <3
Wayne McGregor has created a very beautiful dance duet on this aria at the beginning of his latest choreography named 'FAR'. Movements are sweet and delicate.
After hearing this for the first time on "Arie Antiche" I was fortunate to see Cecilia perform this live with Il Giardino Armonico and was breathless throughout. Now, having seen her sing this song with four different piano accompanists, I can't pick a favorite. No matter, in my 61+ years on this planet, this still resides at the very top of performances I have ever heard, by any singer. Ms. Bartoli is a gift from God.
The music for this aria was not composed by Vivaldi. The aria, originally called Sposa, non mi conosci, was taken from the Geminiano Giacomelli's opera Merope (1734), composed before Vivaldi's pasticcio Bajazet. It was a common practice during Vivaldi's time to compile arias from other composers with one own's work for an opera.
Phis piece of music is absolutely stunning! it is the most beautiful and moving sound I've ever heard. full of emotion and performed in my opinion flawlessly. i love it! Life is good :)
An incredibly beautiful performance by this beautiful artist. I love how deeply emotional her coloratura passages are - not only a showcase of techqnue, but also well integrated and stop your breath with the emotion.
I am a 26 year old male. I'm into drum n bass and dubstep. I play piano, and as such have a broad range of musical interests, but my entire life I have sworn that there are only 2 genres that I don't like - country music...and opera.
Then, I heard this.
It was at the end of a Sopranos episode, and I sat transfixed through the closing credits. By the time it finished, I was crying. Actually crying! Despite what you might think, I'm mentally stable. No music has ever done that to me before. Ever.
@superzoli I know the exact episode, it is the episode called "Pine Barrens" Christopher and Pauly take out the russian to kill him. This episode stuck with me because of this song. It brought me to tears too. Goosebumps and shivers down my spine. This is a powerful piece of music sang so beautifully that I can listen to it over and over again. She makes the vocal trills seem effortless, absolutely flawless!
@Jholanaar Yep, that's the one, the Sopranos has an awesome soundtrack in places. I'm so glad I came across this, and even more so that I have found Bartoli singing it!
Could someone please translate this into English... This is such a Beautiful song, I would really love to know what it means.... Please post the lyrics.
@greatgreatgrandma Wife, I am despised. Faithful, I am outraged. Skies, what have I done? And still he's my heart, my man, my hope. (here she doesn't sing the following part) I love him, but he's unfaithful, I'm hoping, but he's cruel, will you let me die? Oh God, I'm lacking of strength and courage. (literally "there is no strength and constancy")
I love every performance of her.To me she has a natural voice, that is splendid as NIAGARA FALLS,of course on CANADA side!!! She is incomparable with any Divas.
Please, no more intellectual comments on this video and her... and Her VOICE... You don't even know how to feel... shut up about the technique, the voice, the pianist, the piano and anything else. This is a wonderfull and beautiful song. When you hear Cecilia Bartoli singing Vivaldi Sposa son disprezzata you soul is at peace. Listning to this song on mp3 closes the world to you, when you feel and hear the beauty and sadness this song possess.
I also heard this song the first time on the sopranos. But since then its just so much more than a simple sopranos song.
There are many wonderful renditions, but Cecilia's rich mezzo and thoughful dynamics, her "baroque sensibilities" here, make this, for me, the best and
most beloved of any version I have ever heard (and there are many wonderful
Cecilia's continuity from beginning to end is extraordinary. She shows up flaws in every other singer that dares to attempt this piece. None of the others can touch her subtle phrasing and the emotion that tears at the heart. This girl is so sensual! Her sex appeal is off the chart. I wish she had stayed exclusively in the lieder field. The tradeoff of vocal volume in lieu of minute detail was not for her. A crystalline whisper of a note from her is all it takes to make a wall crumble.
@shvartze Bartoli is good here....and I agree her Coluratura is just good enough enough to do this....Her Legato phasing is really good....She should just stay away from anything with demanding Coluratura....
Vivica Genaux's version of this is also excellente.(see the civileso posting here with the score)
Sumi Jo's breathing control is better; yet Bartoli's rich voice and everything else tips the scale with this piece in my opinion. Both ladies touches my heart with their angelic voices, and the words they sung that came alive with full of emotions.

It would be fun to go back in Vivaldi's time.......impress them with some cell phones, I-pods and .......Cecilia Bartoli.

So this was on the Sopranos soundtrack, the second one right?

@Nganguen pity he didn't write this one!
Il n'a pas écris cet air.

Absolutely stunning, one of Bartoli's most memorable arias. Lovely, gorgeous and haunting.

interpretazione orripilante
montale64 2 years ago
newhotmailit 2 years ago
I problemi semmai li aveva lei all' epoca.
