This is amazing. I have the original 1923 acoustic recording on CD but have never heard the 1926 electrical remake until now. I'm going to have to track this version down. Thanks for sharing. This is great stuff from the baton of a great composer. Bravo!!!
1926.....just in time for hollywood sound movies,...i can hear some of the great warner bros. korngold stuff in it etc....DODGE CITY TRACK!......the music dept. did their homework!
The 78 RPM recording limitations frustrated composers/conductors. Chopping the piece up, dealing with about a 4 1/2 min. limit per side, etc. I don't know if Holst was able to perform it the way he really wanted.
It's amazing to hear how HE wanted it to be played and how he would have it performed. This cover is so much better than alot of the recent ones I've been hearing. I love this. 5 stars
I just had to come back and listen again, I am twenty seven years old, the last time I heard or even saw a record was probably twenty years ago. I feel blessed to have the oportunity to listen to such wonderful music on such an important medium, the music reminds me and hopefully all of us that the record was a very important part of music history.
Additionally if you listen closely to the last 40 seconds of the piece you will notice that its played in perfect time scale, the entire piece is at the exact time scale as the piece was originally written.
wow...i'm so use to hearing this song a bit slower...with this recording it seems like moe of a disney theme then a melody for the universe...still...it has a nice novelty to it...
How wonderful to have one of these old recordings! I've only heard contemporary versions. It must be quite rare....

How wonderful it is to hear the master at work.

Quite amazing sound for 1926, especially as UK Columbia had only very recently embraced electrical recording technology.

Sounds very much how I believe the composer Gustav Holst probably wanted it to be played. Most of us are use to hearing it an eight slower.

I just checked it again - exactly 78.26 with no wavering. Some Columbias of this period were recorded at 80 rpm.

Actually it may be a bit too slow. I use a strobe.

i think this may be too fast?? does that record player have a speed control?

It was never considered the definitive recording. Composers are often not the best conductors of their own works. And some were willing to admit it.

Although McMillan's Toronto recording is more refined, of course it's unique to hear Holst conducting his own work

Yes, I have the Toronto recording as well. Thanks.
