I'm not sure if people had started saying it yet by the early 90s, but Charles could have as well said, "I've worked for Mark Goodson for 30 years and all I got was this lousy sweatshirt", or something like that.
As some know Bert Convy hosted the pilot and would've ended up hosting the series, but he collapsed and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. I think Bert would've definitely added a Rayburn-esque flavor to the show, if you watch any of the later Super Password eps. where there was a lot of schtick and banter between Bert and the celebs. Ross does a decent job but isn't a manic, spontaneous guy like Gene was.
@Kate8790 You're absolutely right in this case, but I wouldn't express that as a general rule. The Match Game that was reborn in 1973 was head-over-heels better than the original Match Game of the 60's.
MetalPharoah: I verified at IMDB.com that Gene was still alive when this version of Match Game aired.(and, might have still been when the Micheal Burger version came on.) But somebody supposedly leaked his real age, and, allegedly either ABC, or, MG Productions rejected him as host of this version because of his age.
I always thought the problem was that Schafer wasn't given enough time to get comfortable being the successor to Gene Rayburn. But if what happened at the beginning of of the clip happened often, it obvious that Schafer lost control of the game.
I remember seeing Susan Hoffman in two movies a long time ago. The first was in Clint Eastwood's 1993 thriller "In the Line of Fire", playing a woman in a bank; and the other was the 1995 thriller "Outbreak" with Dustin Hoffman. To my understanding, I can't help but think that Susan and Dustin Hoffman are somehow related to each other, seeing as how they were in the movie "Outbreak" together...
With Seattle's own Ross Shaefer; he worked in both radio and television in the Emerald City in the late 80's; in radio for KJR 950 AM and I believe in television for KING 5.
Ah, I remember when this was on all the time on GSN. (When we still called Game Show Network) Couldn't understand it due to age, but the music was catchy.
Concidering this was from the welfare prizes network (ABC) this was a good show.
@gamshwfan I remember one contestant on TPIR who came on down wearing an "American Idol" t-shirt...which is ironic that both shows are Fremantle properties and they happen to tape at CBS!!!

I'm sorry but remakes can not stand up against the originals! Match Game in the 70s was better, will always be THE best game show.
