@mrshahkecoh There is nothing unsafe unless you either increase the voltage or you're using passive - basically fanless - cooling or a combination of the two. Crank it as far as it will go stable and if it gets unstable you just restart your computer.
@ipodhelpforsmurfs Because Windows 7 isn't much better than XP. It's the truth. They're identical in performance, and I already have 64-bit windows 7 installed on another hard drive, I just rarely ever use it.

@MaliMuki1996 Ideal FPS is 30. If it drops below 20, the gameplay becomes choppy. My FPS on NR2003 on a Mod that kills FPS is 6-11 and thats with 5 cars when they're close. With 1 car, its around 20. I rlly have a reason to OC the hell out of my Graphics Card.
@SmileStreetTutorials Of course. As far as you can go while it remains stable. If it renders artifacts, crashes/freezes games, or causes any other sort of instability, go down at least 10-15 megahertz and try more.
Make sure to test it for hours though, so that you will know the highest temperatures and the overall stability of the overclock.
@SmileStreetTutorials We have two completely different GPUs. You just have to see what yours can handle, because every processor has unique 'characteristics' and some are better 'quality' than others. Thats why some people can reach 1 ghz on an 8600GT's core with overvolts whereas other people can only reach 850 mhz.
@SmileStreetTutorials Try Rivatuner, and you might be able to go further. Also, I believe there is a setting in Rivatuner (I'll try to find it) within the power user tab for the registry settings that allows you to change the range for the allowable clock frequencies to set
it shouldnt show artifact because your CPU is overclocked, if that is the reason then you did your overclock wrong, i have my CPU stable at 4.0GHz and i have had no problem with my card or CPU. Artifact happens because the card is too overclocked and isnt getting enough voltages to support its overclock and when your CPU is OC'd wrong it will just restart your computer.,

@JabbaFanzz There's no real risks unless you have seriously crappy cooling or your increasing the voltage a lot. Carry on with it until you find something fast yet stable.
I wish I knew what I was doing when it came to computers.... but I have no clue and I don't want to go blow hundreds of dollars and not know how to use the stuff.
oh okay thx for the reply i got one more noob question can i upgrade a ati radeon 4250 mobility to a 4860 and can i upgrade the cpu to like 3.0 gHz or more and any recomend would be nice
@ssdfhX111 If it's a laptop, then upgrading your CPU is nearly impossible or impractical and upgrading your GPU would be a hell of a task requiring an hour of your time to disassemble, install and then reassemble.
To be honest your best off overclocking your CPU and then finding some modded drivers if possible... or some other performance tweaks.
@LeonScottKiller Your not risking anything unless you increase the voltage. Most processors can easily handle 75-85 celsius and graphic processors can handle 90-150 C (192 to 302 F) without a problem. As long as you have stock cooling or better and you've got a decent amount of ventilation it will work.
My Pentium 4 has handled 4+ ghz for 3 years in a row and for about a year or so was running 60-75 C (140-168 F). Still going strong. I never overvolted though, only my RAM b4 and that's working.
@kaosknife123 Maybe you shouldn't use ATi Tool it hasn't really been much of a good program for Nvidia cards. Whether you have Nvidia or ATi you can always rely on Rivatuner.
@T69gio A tutorial on how to overclock your central processing unit and/or your graphics processing unit. They run at a certain clock speed measured in hertz (and computers used to be 1 khz over 60 years ago, now they're measured in millions and billions of hertz). To increase the speed of the chip, just increase the amount of clock cycles it performs per second. Clock cycles are the tick-tock of computing and instruction handling.
@DarkReaver91 Yes, I'm not really sure since it's a laptop but you don't have to worry about damaging anything. Try using the bios (if you start your computer and try pressing keys like enter, del, f1, f2, f10, f11, f12 and you get a bios menu you should be able to overclock like that. Otherwise you will need to use speedfan, clockgen or CPUcool... the difficulty in that is you have to find your PLL for your motherboard... Mine wasn't listed in any of these programs. I can't overclock in Windows
@W1zaRDxX Damage can only occur if you exceed the heat or voltage specifications for the processor. Heat and voltage both play a part in electromigration. Basically the stream of electrons occasionally will *pick up* and carry off bits of the metallic compounds in the processor and eventually will destroy the functioning of the processor as a whole. Heat causes this somewhat even with stock settings, but voltage has the most effect (because it's signal strength). Keep it cool and don't overvolt.
@1994yaksh Lol, I think it did everyone. Next time I make a cleaner, revised and shorter tutorial about there won't be any clicking sound. All the math will be left for the viewers to do themselves with only hints.
@Theunknownavenger100 That is an integrated GPU, most do not have the capability to overclock, they would likely burn themselves out anyways without adequate cooling, there is only a teeny little heatsink block over it without a fan.
@Theunknownavenger100 Clockgen or Bios/Cmos. When your computer starts hit f1, f2, enter, delete or f5, f11, f12 and if one of those keys works you will see a blue or black dos-style menu. Look around for any jumper settings or CPU/FSB frequency settings. If you see anything having to do with voltage in there your motherboard is gold! Just don't overvolt yet if you don't want to be replacing your CPU within a few months to a year. Wait until you can chill it down below 40-50 celsius on load.
@Theunknownavenger100 Then it's time to upgrade your motherboard. Get any board that is reviewed good for enthusiast settings like voltage and timings, you'll definitely be overclocking then. What CPU do you have?
@FrosDOwnz Is it bad if there are black squares and traingles appearing and dissapearing constantly? I was playing Bad company 2 on a Nvidia 9400 GT 1 gig at around 66c
@Ravagar Yes, that is artifacting, meaning your video card is unstable at the current core, shader or memory clock. Often times even though the GPU and VRAM fly through stress tests without a hitch, they can be inaccurate in real world performance.
I managed to overclock my low spec Gforce GT-220 and improve core clock by 115Mhz to 740, shader clock by 246 Mhz to 1606 and memory clock by 140Mhz to 930 using EVGA precision
Thank you!! I can play FSX on full settings now with good frame rates! Frame rates inpoved by 7 FPS! (50% improvement)
Fantastic tutorial, helped me alot, I was considering buying a new card but no need to now
@FrosDOwnz No, 7 to 14 FPS. I think I got my math wrong lol
The other thing is, at 740 Mhz core clock, my games crash after about 1 minute of play, but everything else works perfectly. The screen just goes black, then it comes back on but the clock speed wont exceed 420 Mhz after that, and I have to restart to make it back to normal.
Is there any way to make it not crash, I checked the temperature and it is fine (68 degrees) I dont get any anomilies or artifacts either, just screen goes blank
Shit everytime I try to overclock my nvidia card when I press apply (on Rivatuner AND EVGA)it resets back to where it was!what's the problem?plz help..my graphics card is nvidia 9600gt 512mb
@GeorgeAson u see where the floppy disk thingy is on the bottom where the trashcan is right near it click on that floppy looking thing and make a saved folder named 1 .
@NERDYBOY1664 If the card is passively cooled (I.E. Heatsink) or is an older card or uses older drivers, you will not be able to change fan settings until you change the cooling, card or drivers. I recommend you update to the latest drivers, if you've already done that just tell me which card you have and which sub-vendor it's from (like eVGA or XFX).
ur a fuckin retard , how the fuck is this a tutorial ???? all u did was go threw the things u have u didnt show how to use the or what the settings do, fuckin pointless waist of 10 minutes of my life, u should drink some draino
A tutorial shows you essentially how to USE something. There is no specific manner or steps or anything that have to be included. This is roughly the information that you could use for overclocking.
If I just went through with a rigid set of steps I couldn't quite explain SHIT.
Every GPU and the video RAM chips on the card have their own unique tolerances, you don't have to worry about the card breaking unless operating temperatures exceed 200 - 230 F/95-110 C or you increase the amount of voltage.
Use ATiTool, increase the clocks in small increments and scan for artifacts for at least a minute each time. Start with core, then do memory, then combine the clocks and test with games or 3DMark06 for hours.
Hi. You seem to be an expert on this stuff. A question for you. I am using ATI tool for my 9800 Pro. How do you keep the overclock setting at boot up? Every time I start up the machine, the setting goes to default and have to select my saved profile. any help is appreciated.
Ah, the 9800 pro, I wish I had a chance to overclock mine but it was overheating, but I have the 8600 GT now which is quite a lot faster...
The clocks for the card are saved in the bios, if you flash a custom bios onto the card (which can be risky and render it unusable if done improperly) then you can even change voltage, memory timings, 2D and 3D clocks as well as transition clocks.
Use a program called Rivatuner, you can save your overclock to a profile that will be set at windows start.
The firmware and bios are the most basic hardware-level software, and are responsible for the performance, stability and function.
You used to be able to make a card better just by flashing a more powerful cards bios or by unlocking pixel shader or vertex pipelines, but now the only way you can increase performance is to overclock, and for OpenGL applications you can softmod many Gefprce cards to their Quadro counterparts which perform up to twice as good.
well i have a Vista 32bit i think. But im trying to underclock and its really hard for me. IDK how to get to BiOS even if i do i dunno what to do in there. But i want to use like ATI Tool or something. can u pm like easiest way to underclock?
POST comes up every time you start your computer, it should say the key that you press to access the bios, but you only have between 3-10 seconds to do this every time you boot.
In the bios just look for jumper or frequency settings and decrease the clock multiplier for the FSB (Front Side Bus)
That's an HP motherboard, it's a stripped down version of the regular mainstream and enthusiast motherboards. You won't be able to overclock unless you changed your motherboard, and for the money it's best just to switch out your CPU instead.
Yes, that motherboard has overclocking options within it's bios, restart your computer and press F1, Del, Enter or whatever key is needed to enter the bios and change the FSB multiplier.
You'll just get instability until you revert to stock clocks, the only way it could get damaged is if it seriously overheats or is overvolted and still gets too hot.
Nevermind, the VRAM never got damaged, I found this out when I started overvolting it that it was okay, it was probably just Direct X, the slot, drivers or something... even CPU/RAM instability.
There is a general rule that every stepping, revision, and even individual chips have their own specific limits, the only way for you to find it is to test, everyone will only get so far, and temperature is somewhat variable too. All chips cannot reach the same frequencies though upwards. Try OCing a 5200 FX PCI, you'll have fun if you can push it very high,
My 8600GT -720 core from 540 and shader can be bumped from 1188 to 1620. Memory would go up to 870 mhz (1740 mhz effective)
Hey dude, ive got a GTX260 by XFX, i wanted to use the precision toolm but i cant hit "test" button, its already pushed in...how come i cant click on it ?
I'm guessing thats driver-related because it works on and off for me. Problem is it's inaccurate because it only does a split second stress test to make sure its basically accurate, really you should do a 5-10 minute stress test by running FurMark GL or a game w/ maxed AA and settings to see thorough results and improvements of the overclock.
i have a 8400M GS card on my laptop. it's 256 dedicated mem and up to 1 gig shared i think. for some reason rivatuner doesn't recognize the driver at all. any suggestions?
hOLY SHIT DUDE my 8500 GT REGULAR TEMPERATURE IS 59 c. When I overckock my card it get to like 76ºC. That means that it will not live a long time, rite?
My 8600GT gets the same temps, except it'll rise into the high 80s and low 90s, anything under 95-100C is fine for our cards, they won't even start throttling until 115C. 76C is nothing, unless it was your CPU getting that warm while idle.
Well, my card does not have a fan. Oh btw, what is the maximum Core - Mem speed you can get with your OCed 8600GT without finding artifacts? Mine is 690-485 respectively.
I've had the same issue lately with the newer builds and even older, honestly I don't know what it is but I suspect it has something to do with the Nvidia forceware driver version... it's using the driver to test your card and if it doesn't quite recognize it or something then... well lets just say you should test using: 1. ATITool 2. OpenGL Fur Rendering Benchmark (Note: RECOMMENDED! You can find the exact differences in framerate and find when the performance no longer increases.) 3. Games.
If the cooling is better than the standard stock cooling or if the temps are normal or below normal range then I'd say go for it, but every card even same chipsets clock differently and you might hit a wall between performance/stability either soon or late.
Take it slow and test throughly and you'll be good. I never damaged my card or CPU from overclocking :P.
256MB Video RAM is built onto the card and 700 MB of RAM thats installed is being shared for textures and other info to be stored from your GPU and VRAM but writing to and reading from this extra storage is much slower than the VRAM itself.
Which card is it? (as in series and model) and how much RAM do you have installed on your motherboard?
can you tell me what is the average safe limit for no-fan graphic card?
i have gforce 9500 gt.

What to do?
win779 1 year ago
@NERDYBOY1664 If the card is passively cooled (I.E. Heatsink) or is an older card or uses older drivers, you will not be able to change fan settings until you change the cooling, card or drivers. I recommend you update to the latest drivers, if you've already done that just tell me which card you have and which sub-vendor it's from (like eVGA or XFX).

goddamn i just wanna know how to bump up the voltage on a pcix geforce
x73rm 1 year ago
Pencil mod it. Just take a pencil and shade in the resistor a bit to raise the voltage, take the card out first so you don't short circuit it.
FrosDOwnz 1 year ago
@x73rm Look up a mod guide for your card model.

ur a fuckin retard , how the fuck is this a tutorial ???? all u did was go threw the things u have u didnt show how to use the or what the settings do, fuckin pointless waist of 10 minutes of my life, u should drink some draino
camar044 1 year ago
A tutorial shows you essentially how to USE something. There is no specific manner or steps or anything that have to be included. This is roughly the information that you could use for overclocking.
If I just went through with a rigid set of steps I couldn't quite explain SHIT.

can I overclock an ATI Radeon HD 4530 and if so what do I set it to so it doesnt break?
joblessalex 2 years ago
Every GPU and the video RAM chips on the card have their own unique tolerances, you don't have to worry about the card breaking unless operating temperatures exceed 200 - 230 F/95-110 C or you increase the amount of voltage.
Use ATiTool, increase the clocks in small increments and scan for artifacts for at least a minute each time. Start with core, then do memory, then combine the clocks and test with games or 3DMark06 for hours.
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
Hi. You seem to be an expert on this stuff. A question for you. I am using ATI tool for my 9800 Pro. How do you keep the overclock setting at boot up? Every time I start up the machine, the setting goes to default and have to select my saved profile. any help is appreciated.
doct0rthrill 2 years ago 2
Ah, the 9800 pro, I wish I had a chance to overclock mine but it was overheating, but I have the 8600 GT now which is quite a lot faster...
The clocks for the card are saved in the bios, if you flash a custom bios onto the card (which can be risky and render it unusable if done improperly) then you can even change voltage, memory timings, 2D and 3D clocks as well as transition clocks.
Use a program called Rivatuner, you can save your overclock to a profile that will be set at windows start.
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago

PoofSmoof 2 years ago
POST comes up every time you start your computer, it should say the key that you press to access the bios, but you only have between 3-10 seconds to do this every time you boot.
In the bios just look for jumper or frequency settings and decrease the clock multiplier for the FSB (Front Side Bus)

set073june172 2 years ago
What motherboard do you have exactly? Some motherboards do not support overclocking, you may need to update the bios or change some other setting.
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
I have a MS 6577
(I know its pretty old so ima blow up that PC so that i can get my new one quickly :D)
set073june172 2 years ago
That's an HP motherboard, it's a stripped down version of the regular mainstream and enthusiast motherboards. You won't be able to overclock unless you changed your motherboard, and for the money it's best just to switch out your CPU instead.
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
I have a Pentium 4 cpu 2.6 ghz speed and an px865pe lite/pro motherboard. Is it possible to overclock?
2FAT4Y 2 years ago
Yes, that motherboard has overclocking options within it's bios, restart your computer and press F1, Del, Enter or whatever key is needed to enter the bios and change the FSB multiplier.

does anyone know how to fix, if you umm... over did it...
SLaggaBoY82 2 years ago
@SLaggaBoY82
You'll just get instability until you revert to stock clocks, the only way it could get damaged is if it seriously overheats or is overvolted and still gets too hot.
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
Nevermind, the VRAM never got damaged, I found this out when I started overvolting it that it was okay, it was probably just Direct X, the slot, drivers or something... even CPU/RAM instability.

do u know where can i find limits of any cards?
XBurimX 2 years ago
There is a general rule that every stepping, revision, and even individual chips have their own specific limits, the only way for you to find it is to test, everyone will only get so far, and temperature is somewhat variable too. All chips cannot reach the same frequencies though upwards. Try OCing a 5200 FX PCI, you'll have fun if you can push it very high,
My 8600GT -720 core from 540 and shader can be bumped from 1188 to 1620. Memory would go up to 870 mhz (1740 mhz effective)

PLZ HELP?????
destokilli8 2 years ago
It depends on your CPU, RAM and video card.
The first two can bottleneck your video card, whereas the last could bottleneck the first two.
Specs? If you don't have the requirements for your GPU then the best bet is to buy a newer, better card.

Oh and BTW I got a better headset than before and all my new tutorials will just be short and sweet, direct to the point.

Okay, all the newer videos won't have that. Most of the information except for Rivatuner you'll probably find out just trying out the programs.

Hey dude, ive got a GTX260 by XFX, i wanted to use the precision toolm but i cant hit "test" button, its already pushed in...how come i cant click on it ?
4nubiS 2 years ago
I'm guessing thats driver-related because it works on and off for me. Problem is it's inaccurate because it only does a split second stress test to make sure its basically accurate, really you should do a 5-10 minute stress test by running FurMark GL or a game w/ maxed AA and settings to see thorough results and improvements of the overclock.

Yes, it's integrated if it's sharing memory. Integrated GPUs are not overclockable.

Radeon X1650 Series
Approx. Total Memory 512.0 MB
miro995 2 years ago
Well you should be able to clock your P4 to at least 3.5-3.6 Ghz.
Unsure about your card.
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
When you OC you want to always stay below 65 C (149 F). This way your CPU will still live a decently long life.
Use Speedfan to monitor temps.
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
hOLY SHIT DUDE my 8500 GT REGULAR TEMPERATURE IS 59 c. When I overckock my card it get to like 76ºC. That means that it will not live a long time, rite?
thenightfirekilla 2 years ago
My 8600GT gets the same temps, except it'll rise into the high 80s and low 90s, anything under 95-100C is fine for our cards, they won't even start throttling until 115C. 76C is nothing, unless it was your CPU getting that warm while idle.
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
When I don't OC, it just gets into the mid to upper 70s, sometimes 80s if its as stressful as Crysis.
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
If your really all that worried just crank up your fan speed using rivatuner or something.
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
Well, my card does not have a fan. Oh btw, what is the maximum Core - Mem speed you can get with your OCed 8600GT without finding artifacts? Mine is 690-485 respectively.
thenightfirekilla 2 years ago
725-870 :P
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
I have the 256MB GDDR3 version though, not the 512-1GB GDDR2
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
Worry not... there is a program called RivaTuner that works with ALL Nvidia cards and now even ATi.
If not then there is still a variety of programs you could still use for overclocking. I'll get back to you when I find something.
ATiTool doesn't work with the newer drivers except for testing and temperature monitoring.
Perhaps it wasn't eVGA?
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
with the EVGA precision tool, it wont let me test?? why??
GUITARPLAYAx93x 2 years ago
I've had the same issue lately with the newer builds and even older, honestly I don't know what it is but I suspect it has something to do with the Nvidia forceware driver version... it's using the driver to test your card and if it doesn't quite recognize it or something then... well lets just say you should test using: 1. ATITool 2. OpenGL Fur Rendering Benchmark (Note: RECOMMENDED! You can find the exact differences in framerate and find when the performance no longer increases.) 3. Games.
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
thanks so much. i tried in arma 2 but i think i went too far lol. the game just went to a black screen so i had to end the process :P
GUITARPLAYAx93x 2 years ago
hey i have 4870 ati radeon it says its factory overclocked can i still overclock more thanks
nigeemac999 2 years ago
If the cooling is better than the standard stock cooling or if the temps are normal or below normal range then I'd say go for it, but every card even same chipsets clock differently and you might hit a wall between performance/stability either soon or late.
Take it slow and test throughly and you'll be good. I never damaged my card or CPU from overclocking :P.
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
i have ati radeon hd 3470
monkeyphilip321 2 years ago
kk lol nice it has 256MB VRAM built in and all its doing is just sharing from your main RAM in case the built in VRAM runs short.
Either your ATI card is sharing memory or your integrated card is which is integrated into the motherboard and shares main RAM anyways.
I think you have about 1 GB RAM right?
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
how do i know my limits i have ati 256mb vram and it says 1000mb on the windows and 700 shared
monkeyphilip321 2 years ago
256MB Video RAM is built onto the card and 700 MB of RAM thats installed is being shared for textures and other info to be stored from your GPU and VRAM but writing to and reading from this extra storage is much slower than the VRAM itself.
Which card is it? (as in series and model) and how much RAM do you have installed on your motherboard?
FrosDOwnz 2 years ago
