My taste for music is very eclectical, I like nearly everything, but these 2 ladies did something magical, one of the greatest duets I´ve ever seen. Something really HEAVENLY, as some of you said.
I felt I had the moral obligation to preserve it at all costs.
I couldn't believe my good fortune when I came across this! Ella(the greatest of them all) singing with Karen(the most beautiful voice of them all). Doesn't get any better.
Undoubtedly one of the greatest voices in pop music (Karen) coupled with one the three great jazz singers of the 20th Cent. Karen was a kick-ass drummer as well.
Comments that mean to put down Karen show the lack of knowledge that Karen had a perfect pitch which was legendary confirmed by musicians and record producers. If any miming at all, it was for the high-quality audio which Richard was very meticulous about. And miming for TV shows was very common in the 70s into the 80s. It didn't mean singers or musicians didn't have the real talent. Those lucky enough to see the carpenters LIVE would recognize the genius of this wonderful brother-sister team.
whan karen sings someone to watch over me she is constantly smiling. but this doesnt match the sound she is making in her delivery. definately miming.
@ivh1968 look at the out takes available of this, no "miming" If I had the opportunity to sing with the greatest singer of our time, I would be smiling all the time, regardless the lyrics.
Thanks for posting this treasure. Karen Carpenter probably didn't get the critical respect she deserved because she didn't do many of the classics from the American songbook.... but listen here to some of those classics here ... she really had it. What a treat to see her with Lady Ella... May they both rest in peace.
it saddens me to know that my generation doesn't exactly have this...and by this i mean music from the heart (not criticizing musicians nowadays...but damn...this video is BEAUTIFUL).
Karen didn't have to rely on Mariah Carey/ Beyonce style vocal warbling to impress an audience. The perfect clarity of her voice was enough. Timeless.
These 2 singers seem to be listening to each other, putting it out there in their own ways, loving & feeling the words & the music, such a blend, even with such different tonal qualities - soooo beautiful, so touching. Thanks for sharig.
@sukes58 Keep in mind that Ella was at the end of her career, and for a woman who had been singing and knocking them dead with her incredible singing for 50 years by the time she did this, she's pretty damn good. And even though her voice isn't what it once was, her technique and ability to deliver the lyrics correctly was still fully intact. She was the best, ask anyone that sings...
@sukes58 That's a bit harsh. When someone of Ella's stature as an artist can still beautifully phrase the way she does over half century century on, respect should be paid regardless of her range. She's in a class all her own.
Sylar962: You say, "If angels could sing, they would do exactly this." Well, they do sing (See the Christmas story in the Bible); and for those who believe in their Creator, when passing from this Earth, we'll most certainly hear them and perhaps join in with them. Won't that be marvelous?!
Absolutely amazing! What beautiful voices. Angels on earth and in heaven. So sad that they are both gone---but their voices will live on forever! Love them together!
Every so often, I click on this video; it's bookmarked. And, every time, it lifts my spirits. I am glad God blessed the world with the remarkable gifts of Mesdames Carpenter and Fitzgerald, and that we have the privilege of accessing their performances via modern technology any time we're so inclined.
If this was my first exposure to either artist, I would be disappointed. Isn't this a bit too waspish for Ella? There is little passion here just technical ability, Just sayin...
Karen Carpenter's voice is crystal clear, Ella Fitzgerald's voice is like hearing honey drip. I had a chance to see Ella's last performance at Oakland's Paramount theatre and she was F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S !
I wish we hadn't missed out on all of the music Karen still had in her. Can you imagine what she would have done had she had a career as long as Ella's?
as time goes by is such a cliched song, but these 2 made it sound so heavenly.. diana krall, norah jones and all those making disposable 'pop jazz' fluff these days ought to listen to how the legends do it!!
Oh my God that "Don´t get around much any more" at the end of the lovely medley is WONDERFUL!!, I love both and I really felt sad they are no longer with us :(
two women, one first lady of song, and one first lady of pop! i know there in a better place, but DAMN IT!!!! i wish they were here for one more duet!!! this will forever be a jewel to always look forward to watch, over and over again!!!
Karen was in the throes of her anorexia when this masterpeice was recorded, but listening to her achingly sexy voice, you'd never know. What a duet. Wolfsky9
The more I watch, the more I feel that Karen was singing the wrong kind of music. She really should have been a jazz or blues singer with the occasional foray into pop.
KAREN TE AMO!!!! que tal diferencia...Karen de lejos es la mejor voz del planeta ,la VOZ MAS PURA que haya existido en la historia...wow por siempre KAREN..
I'm not looking to politicize this, but THIS is a perfect example of the America I love and served to protect. THIS is the America I love: where perhaps the best singer we have ever been blessed with (Ella) gets to share the stage with one of the most talented musicians and singers of the younger generation (Karen); someone who had the utmost respect for Ella.
