There's an easy solution here: Vote with your wallet and go to smoke-free businesses, if you're bothered so much by smoking establishments. I'm very glad for once, to see a city council reject the lies of anti-smoking groups on smoking bans, when the truth is they have SEVERELY hurt establishments formerly catering to smokers.
Go to Illinois or Ohio sometime, and you can see how much these laws have hurt businesses in both states. Or even google Smoke Choke Ohio!
I used to live in IL, and when they banned the smoking, the businesses lived on and made even better money. I lived in Portugal for a yr and they banned it there and they still rake in some $.... so if they ban smoking the businesses wont DIE.... some may fade away that are already struggling.
You know DJ, I seriously don't doubt some businesses made more money when they banned smoking. And I have nothing against business owner(s) choosing on their own to ban smoking, if they think it gives them a competitive advantage. But really, shouldn't common sense prevail, and anyone who doesn't want to work in cig smoke use their brain and NOT apply for a job in businesses permitting smoking?
As a lifelong IL resident who frequents Indy, there's no doubt IL's ban has greatly hurt our casinos!
I have only been to the casino here once and wasnt impressed with it.... if ya want a nice place to goto a casino goto Blackhawk Colorado, now thats an awesome place. I wouldnt mind as much if the business owners wanted the option to make it smoking or not, if they installed a quality air filtration system ,there are some great ones made these days but a lot of the business owners wont fork out the $ for the system.
Right, I see your point about air filtration systems. I also prefer bars too that made the effort to install such systems, and thus this is one of many reasons I opposed Proposal 371(the smoking ban expansion), since any smoking establishments that invested in air filtration systems would've lost money from what they spent to install such systems.
Good to see we're having a spirited debate, and not the name calling I often see from too many commenters on articles or videos about smoking bans.
If they do pass the ban, then they should at least compensate the bar/establishment owners for their investment. I have an open mind for both sides of the debate
You're absolutely right that governments should compensate for bars making such an investment. Of course, truth is most anti-smokers don't care which businesses are affected by bans, in process of passing unnecessary laws to satisfy their selfish desire of making smoking businesses smoke-free against the wishes of owners+patrons. I feel as long as a business posts clear exterior signage informing patrons they permit smoking(as Indy's current ban requires), such policy should be an owner's call.
Well clearly posted signs are cool at least ya know whats up.... Cept if you have a sign that says beware of dog... if ur dog bites someone even if u have the sign, your responsible (B/S) but you know how that goes when ya live in a "Sue Happy" Society. Im a non-smoker and hate smelling it even in traffic, but if people wanna smoke their life away not smelling real smells instead of covered up ones so to speak, its their choice.
cont..... I was a smoker for 8 yrs and felt soo much better after. One thing I dont like seeing though is 1-2 adults in a car full of kids and they are smoking. Some states already made a law against that and I totally agree with that law
What a bunch of CRAP..... enforce the Ban and let me breathe Clean air. Not all the pollutants others do.
