Apparently having more tilled dirt around the melon stem increases efficiency. therefore just plant wheat where you don't want the melon to grow. You should do some extra research to make sure but this would be very beneficial to your farm if it still works.

It is called a BUD (Block Update Detector), not BUD switch, technically.
