to disable it can damage the computer? my mbp started making that same noise but i figured out it happens when I move my mac, but sometimes when i don't move it...i'm worried help! :/
I have the same thing my friend. Apple people said to me that there is nothing wrong with my macbook pro 13 inch. The clicking sound you're hearing is when you're moving your macbook right? it is stabalizing the hard drive so it won't damage or something :p. But don't worry. BTW. Is it normal that a 3 week old macbook pro its HD is making the cracking noise of a old hard drive???
Had the same noise if i picked up the Mac or put it down quickly Thanks for the information. I have disabled and re-enabled it thanks to you instructions and the noise stopped Thanks Tony
@jaywebb144 is this normal? It does this when I pick up my Macbook pro 15" to fast or move it from side to side, or tilt it for the accelorometer inside.. I was told by apple it's not normal, and I'm supposed to get it fixed.
So glad you made this. I were about to return my new mac until I came upon this vid, and read the comments. (It would have been neat if this was posted on apple's home page!) ^^
That's exactly it! Thanks for the responses and video with the sound. Once I disabled the sensor, the noise stopped. Now I don't need to take it to Apple Store for further analysis since this is normal on MacBook Pro.
Thanks for the comments guys. I think I have found a solution to this. I believe it is actually down to the SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor) that is built into the Macbook Pro, and I believe many earlier models. This senses a sudden motion and automatically parks the head of drive to stop the drive getting damaged. This produces the clicking sound. To disable it, type "sudo pmset -a sms 0" into the terminal. To re-enable type "sudo pmset -a sms 1". You should find that the clicking noise goes away.
Well, awesome! I wondered if it was my hard drive scratching, or something to protect it. I'm glad to see it's the latter. I don't mind the noise as long as it's ensuring the safety of my HDD. Thanks for the update.
I bought my new 13" macbook 1 month ago. I also have the same problem as you since 2 days ago. But before that, it was ok. don't know how to solve the problem... wanna take my mac to apple store. but I think they will say it's normal...
BTW, my noise is not so loud as yours... but the same type, I think.
Please let me know if you get any solution for this problem. Thanks. :)
I have the same issue. It is the HDD and trust me I'm just as nervous as you are. Oddly enough though, the HDD is actually placed on the left side where you rest your palms.

Thanks a lot I figured thats what it was (SMS) but it bugs the shit out of me! Maybe now that I'm reassured it won't bother me as much.

I have the exact same issue, its apparently the drive that comes with the computer.
If you switch to another drive it stops :S
It is very unnerving though i have to say...

hei buddy!
just letting you know that mine has the same clicking sound. and i just lost all my data.
the computer slows down every time i use it, the spinning wheel appears more often every day.
today it does pass the apple window during start up.
apple tech told me that it is a defective HDD.

after (clean) installing 10.6 the sudden motion sensor is enabled again, but it appears snow leopard fixed the clicking noise :)

Oh! I have the same "problem" !
So I guess there's nothing actually wrong with it.... just some kind of security thing?
It annoyed me at first... not knowing what it was. But know that I read your post I feel a little better about it.
Tried your trick, it worked!
Oh yeah.... snow leopard does not change anything!

@Kingddd333 sorry I'm awful with computers, what does that mean?
emmacasty 3 months ago
@emmacasty That's the command prompt. You type sudo pmset-a sms 0 into the terminal. You can just look for terminal.app
