This song should have won every award in its day for songwriting, arranging, engineering or production. A sheer masterpiece (especially for 1975 technology) that made every song they did after that seem downright clunky. Except for a few keyboard textures that were specifically linked to that time, this song sounds unbelievably fresh, not to mention HAUNTING! These guys will be on my eternal heroes list for this track.
...these are the most complex background vocals ever recorded. Well ahead of it's time and technology, each note was recorded and overdubbed on seperate tracks and then the mixing board was 'played' like a keyboard for the final mix.
Thanks davo6 for sharing this! I read on a biography of 10cc that this song which came out in the early 70's was the most complex song of it's time. There will probably never be another one like it. It is the ultimate "healing after a breakup" song.
The backing vocals were actually tape loops that were "played" by moving faders on a mixing desk. You could describe it as analogue sampling. REM copied the technique for Star Me Kitten, and acknowledged they wanted to sound like 10cc.
I agree with you....one of the most romantic silly song that will eventually make you sing if someone breaks up with you....im not in love....im not in love.....perfect song to stop you from hurting...ha ha ha....
I think 10cc were ahead of their time. A lot of the success of their songs was due to the sound of the Gizmotron developed by Godley and Creme. Combined with harmonic vocals it produced an almost eerie sound, particularly in this song, and also in the middle of "Art for Arts Sake". They broke up far too soon.
The background vocals are real. What they did is they recorded them once and then dubbed them several times so it seems that there is a whole choir singing.
I actually some time live in 1975! and they did this song exactly as on the record.
I still do remember tehis concert as well as the ELO concert i visited that year.
Actually, I think it is a love song. This guy is trying to deny the fact he still loves the other person, despite the fact the relationship is on the rocks. A love song, whether the love is requited or not, is still a love song.
oh my god this is the first song that i danced to and the first song that i got drunk to. i remember that i was so scared to go home. that was so many years ago and my first love.
One of the best songs ever written. yes, i mean it. hard to believe, but seriously, even with the sometimes-cheezy synth sounds, it's really a beautiful composition/production.
Never thought of doing 10cc search, this is so great, , think they are one of the most creative bands ever! I remember every song being good on any of their records. (Note to self: purchase anthology if available)
Red Red Meat does a great cover of this song (much more 90s sounding but it still has some awesome vocals/harmonization). The cover is on youtube too.
Thanks for clearing that up tudorman64. The documentary states that Cathy Warren, a secretary for Strawberry Studios (1974-78) did the voice. Whew! My mental image has been restored :)

Thanks for posting video and to my nostalgic trip back in time.
Aun recuerdo en mis dias frios lluviosos de la escuela cuando me decia a mi mismo el texto de la cancion .. que hermosos dias ! .. esa si hera la temporada mas hermosa de mi vida
Very true. The songs written today just don't have a way of defining emotion like the 70's and early 80's did. This number really puts you in a good space. I know that it has that effect on me. Thank you for posting this beautiful song.
I just CAN'T get enough of the 70s & 80s....GREAT STUFF...I am thankful I grew up when I did...this current rap/crap that's on the radio today is NOT music, at least not to this set of ears....
It's a funny thing, finding out that Eric Stewart (the guy singing this song), was the same guy who sung a number 2 hit back in 1966, The Mindbenders "A Groovy Kind Of Love". Eric was the lead singer of that band, in 1966. Wayne Fontana left the band, the end of 1965.
I find this discovery very cool. I like both songs, too.
What a beautiful piece of ART! Such a tender and peaceful song...it should send a calming and yet nestialgic vibration to anyone who listens to it no matter what age. I think this was recorded in late 1979? ..when I hear it today still puts me in that mood. Special song thanks... 10cc
Whether 10cc realized it or not,,,they created a masterpiece. And somehow, back then I think no one paid much attention to the lyrics.....the lyrics may mean more..now, rather than way back when when. But how many posters can remember this song being played, way back in their teenage years, at high school dances,or at parties? Oh Lordy!...... I still luv this song...one of the finer arrangements that came along.... :)
He keeps her picture up on the wall, it hides a nasty stain thats lying there. Any picture can hide a stain, he is in love, just too scared to admit it.
im about to fall over my chair with sheer amazement that a video of this song even exists. My heartfelt thanks to the person who was gracious enough to share an eternal classic.
I love this song too...I was only two years old when it came out, but my mom played this record constantly...what surprises me is that no one has mention how totally fucked up this song really is, especially for it's time...it is so dark and twisted...and I love that...
I absolutely loved this song when it hit the radio airwaves in '75. I was 15 at the time and this song brings back so many memories. I can't believe I'll be turning 50 next April. Where'd the time go?! :)

'75 was a great year for me. The Flyers won their second straight Stanley Cup, so many girlfriends my freshman year of high school, Babe Ruth baseball, youth football, etc. I occasionally ride by the midget football field while I visit my mom in my hometown. 34 years ago. We're getting old, folks :)
no internet, no cell phones, no iPods, no satellite (and a LOT of black and white) TV, no bottled water, no cars that damn near drove themselves, Jeopardy wasn't dumbed down, no microwave ovens, no 24/7 news, no answering machines, u could spend $10 on gas and cruise allllll night, the food we ate wasn't 99.99% chemicals, and yes, if we didn't make it home for supper, our parent's didn't even THINK about if we had been abducted or shot by an irate classmate. plus the music was just dam better.
This song takes me right back to the summer of 1975. I still can't believe that is has been 34 years...time sure flies. One of my all time favorite songs from a much more innocent time in the world that I wish we could go back to. Thanks for posting.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Innocent time? For fucks sake, it was a horrible time. Even worse than we like to believe we have it now. Race riots, vietnam war, all kinds of crazy shit going on from the sixties to seventies. Even the eighties wasn't that great. These be the good old days, right now. Even with the economy and the iraq war, we are still better off by far.
At least you didn't have to lock the doors when you left the house (at least where I grew up). Can't remember 5th graders bringing guns to school or eight graders having babies either back then. Lots more countries have nuke weapons now. You didn't have a full throttle, cut throat society that demands their stores to be open 24/7/365 and doesn't take a day off from shopping. Any decade had its problems but they are getting worse now. Not arguing with you, just adding a few points. Peace.
If you're truly 24 y/o, you weren't even around in 1975, so how would you know what it was like? Also, for those who did experience this era, you will find as many opinions about the time as there are people. For you as a young person, I understand your allegience to the era of your youth. But for those of us who are older, many of us view yesteryear as a simpler, less complex time that we'd like to return to. You certainly don't speak for me, and I was there!
there are some amazing things today, youtube allowing you to reminise when you like to name one, but lives were less cluttered, ignorance could be identified before it became an international culture, and people were at least capable of having a coherent thought. Sure, white middle aged men ruled the world, and politics was crazy. Now everyone's watching Brittany Spears hair while we self destruct.
A bright full moon fills the night sky, the Arizona desert breeze is clean and sweet. A gleaming black '70 Dodge Coronet R/T makes it way toward Phoenix with this song on the radio. A young man behind the wheel, next to him a sultry young blonde goddess of incomparable beauty. Time somehow seems to stand still, his heart abounds with joy, everything is as it should be,peaceful, wonderful, and sweet. They are young and together, all is right with the world, he is in love, love that is timeless.
Im 23 now and when I was 18 I met my husband and this was the very first song we danced to at his Aunt's wedding..Im into music from the 70's and 80's more than what is out there today.. :D
I just Love this song sooo much. The instrumental is just so soothing and beautiful. The words are so powerful...him being so in denial and trying to convince himself hes not in love is pure genius.
This song always brings me back to my early childhood in the 70's. I can remember how it feels to be a 3 yr old child, completely absorbed by this song. Same effect from Baker Street/Gerry Rafferty.
In the early 70s, I worked at the airlines with my good friend Chuck Lindsey who was also a professional songwriter. He would write soft rock and sell the music and lyrics scores to groups just starting out for a few hundred dollars each relinquishing all rights. He named off some his songs incredulously, many of them were recognizable and some were top hits like:
sigh****** everytime i hear this tears well in my eyes...i cannot shake it, the melancholy of the love before....trully classic song...and yes, songs of now don't have that much of an impact as the songs as past....
Whaddya mean MrChubbington? KC & The Sunshine Band's Shake Yer Booty was a hit at the same time! I loved this song on the AM, the requesting quiet bit was more eerie in mono on AM, whatever, plenty of people hated this soft 70s sound, people hated the 70s in the moment. Now it sounds like like bluebees and puffy clouds.
Explanation time ...Back in the 70's before the disco , they used to be dance halls with bands and sort of dj's. people would dance away to the relatively fast stuff , and basically were waiting for the time two or three slows were playes so you could go up to a girl and ask " want to dance?" and then you knew you had a chance. Remember the 70's those dance places with the big mirror ball and a few lights, before the lazer , stroboscope , etc. Yes I remember I was there!
"I'm not in love" 10cc's highest ranked song ever, placed #2 for two weeks in June of 1975. These were the greatest and most competitive times ever in Pop music's illustrious history. And 10cc played an important roll in making 1975 the greatest year ever in rock and roll history.
@Roadie02 It means I(as in me)Reckon(this is what i believe)he(the guy who wrote the song)was(once he)Bangin(havin sex with)a fat(a largly proportioned)chick(woman).. Hope that helps you out fella. Stay in school ;)

I just Love this song sooo much. The instrumental is just so soothing and beautiful. The words are so powerful...him being so in denial and trying to convince himself hes not in love is pure genius.

This song reminds me of a rainy day back in the 1970s.
Its like a trip back in time!

- Precious And Few Climax
- How Long Has This Been Going On Ace
- Im Not In Love 10cc
After 1976, I lost touch.
