Norm is a real favorite among comedians. They all like him because he is so pure as a stand-up. He has an amazing knack for digging comedy gold up out of the weirdest most unpromising ground. His sense of comic timing is very quirky. I think his greatest most original contribution to stand-up comedy is his realization that bombing is funny too and can actually be funnier than killing. He's a total original. Really a giant, like Howard Stern in radio comedy. Both of these guys broke new ground.

If you watch norm interviews you notice he often remembers the theme of the first funny bit and hangs onto it till the very end to repeat it. A lot of comedians do something similar and string a theme along across two or three jokes, but Norm is downright methodical about it. He'll hang onto it for 30 minutes and slip it in just at the end, but he can make it seem seamless because his whole shtick is direction-less.

He operates on a different level, his comedy is like poker; always a set up.

Yeah, I remember the show Norm had on ABC. It wasn't a monster hit but he really got put off the air because of his appearance on "the view" which he really got into hot water because of some controversial comments he made. Seems like he's been blacklisted ever since. I mean if Jim belushi has his own show, why can't norm? lol

I'm not sure if he's not mainstream, the show was just another sitcom clone and it didn't really have Norm's standup sensibility. The only thing keeping it afloat was the fact that norm starred in it.

@techparts Problem is that Norm NEVER had a mainstream hit. SNL was the most mainstream success he ever had and he got fired. Although, I hear he got fired because the cast didn't like him, he wouldn't do sketches, and he criticized the writers' lack of original ideas, not because he wasn't good. I also don't think a lot of people get his delivery. Basically, he's too smart for mainstream.

Most people think he really is stupid, which makes no sense to me because he pretty much always slips in the idea that the stupidity is just a part of his routine every time he's doing standup/being interviewed, like here where he screws with Conan using Tanya and his risible joke.
