Theres no bands remotely like this anymore. Politics has gone from music. Such a shame. Theres no importance or urgency in music anymore. Not like refused had anyway.
fuck me, his snare sound is unbeleivable in the recordings, does anyone have any idea of how to get such an aggeressive sound like that? It's not ringy at all, it's just pure punch in the neck impact.
@SmikenDike I think it's just the way he plays. There's a million drummers out there technically better than this guy, but I've never seen anyone beat on a kit with such passion and emotion like David does.
@yuppiekiller I don't give a shit about "better" drummers in that way..it's creativity, not just technicality.. I just love that sound, I hear some of that in Queens of the Stone Age snare sound too, but not quite as much. dave just sounds like he's hitting a cow with a hammer it's so thick.
I used to listen to refused and try and figure all the time signatures. I could never fucking figure them out because of the pace, now I just sit back and take it in and don't think about those fucking signatures.
My favourite drummer (and band) of all time. Never been able to replicate the drums accurately, in particular the way he silences the snare in the intro. Quick as you like. I love David Sandstrom.
all hardcore music is absolute and utter shit when compared to one of the greatest heavy acts in recorded music history. no fucking question. its a shame the refused are fucking dead...
agreed, the breakdown is kind of unfortunate, solely due to the bass player. the bass on the record is amazing, while this guy dosen't even change chords or rhythm the whole time.
BUT guitarist Kristofer Steen does play a little bit of "ornithology" by charlie parker in the very beginning, so we know who the real jazz player is in this lineup.
they recover with the "bad to the bone"-like outro though
haha no he dosen't. on the record, the bass is changing chords, and changing rhythms, like a traditional walking bassline over chords, transitioning into a solo/breakdown. live, the bassist is only playing straight eighth notes over one repeated chord, which gets boring and repetitive.
the double/string bass part being played by an electric fretted bass shouldn't sound much different (besides timbre) if they are playing the right notes and rhythms
Oh yeah, you're right, the bass part plays like an ascending scale on the record, when the bass player here just plays the same set of notes. It's still a cool-sounding part live though, it hasn't ruined it.
Compare it to the CD version, he plays it an octave down the whole time and doesn't get the fill part. Jazz needs a bit of feeling, not a constant 8th note rhythm. You'd just think they'd have a competent bass player, especially considering how amazing the guitars and drums are in here. Yes I'm being nitpicky, but hey, that part kicks ass.
Yeah, but it's not just a punk song, or just a hardcore song. It's a Refused song, and it's epic because they mix so many styles so well. Their live bass player doesn't have the chops to do it. /opinion
haha he really doesn't, its just kind of hard to play the way it was on the cd considering it wasn't done on a bass but a fret less stand up bass, quite different instruments
the drummer is so sick, this whole band is sick ... it's a pity that there is no band like this nowadays (but if there is one i don't know yet please tell me!)
Man i saw them about 20 times back in the day........few bands reach this level in onstage intensity... Miss thoose days but we have bands like converge and meeleh that gives great shows......
