agreed, the breakdown is kind of unfortunate, solely due to the bass player. the bass on the record is amazing, while this guy dosen't even change chords or rhythm the whole time.

BUT guitarist Kristofer Steen does play a little bit of "ornithology" by charlie parker in the very beginning, so we know who the real jazz player is in this lineup.

haha no he dosen't. on the record, the bass is changing chords, and changing rhythms, like a traditional walking bassline over chords, transitioning into a solo/breakdown. live, the bassist is only playing straight eighth notes over one repeated chord, which gets boring and repetitive.

the double/string bass part being played by an electric fretted bass shouldn't sound much different (besides timbre) if they are playing the right notes and rhythms

Oh yeah, you're right, the bass part plays like an ascending scale on the record, when the bass player here just plays the same set of notes. It's still a cool-sounding part live though, it hasn't ruined it.

Compare it to the CD version, he plays it an octave down the whole time and doesn't get the fill part. Jazz needs a bit of feeling, not a constant 8th note rhythm. You'd just think they'd have a competent bass player, especially considering how amazing the guitars and drums are in here. Yes I'm being nitpicky, but hey, that part kicks ass.
