  • love forever

  • wow. who fucking knew Tom Waits knew what i was thinking the other night at the bar.... damn

  • Wish there were better words to describe Tom's works. So poetic and beautifully nostalgic. Tom's indeed a legend!

  • If you love Tom Waits, see the movie "Down By Law." He's fantastic. Costars Roberto Benigni and John Lurie and includes scenes of pre-hurricane New Orleans.

  • This breaks my heart

  • I completely agree.

  • tom waits legend!!

  • Tom never gets old, never.

  • daxster

    alas, Tommmy does get old.

(I was a fan of young John R Cash once upon a dream) It's the music that never ages,

the song that stays forever young.

    bless.

    D.

  • Ah yes, it is indeed the music. I'm reading a bio on Tom, or at least trying to, the author - Patrick Humprhies - is a terrible writer. Don't bother picking it up.

  • I agree with stacey...I don't think she meant the music doesn't get old, but neither does Tom...I was thinking he's aging, but then I heard one of the clips here on YouTube from his 2008 concert...he's still telling great stories and his voice didn't sound as bad as I thought it would...he just doesn't age (on the inside) and he will probably put all of us in the grave. If you get a chance, watch the movie Wrist Slitters (a love story) just for Toms performance - Really funny.

  • It might be called wristcutters...not sure

  • Thundrrd, I will look that up for sure. Thanks for the pointer.

  • Yeah, it's Wristcutters. I highly suggest it

  • Stacey: if you rent the video - I found it at BlockBuster; by accident - there is a clip in the Special features (not in the movie) called something about hypnotizing a chicken where Toms character does just thatit may be me, but it was the funniest clip Id seen of Tom.

  • What a great song!

    Thanks for sharing David :)

    5*

  • I can listen to it 5 or 6 times in a row and not get tired of..<3<3<3

  • Long live the rebel! The voice of a generation and the icon of a century!

  • I think he's saying don't hesitate, go for it.

  • he's crazy

  • chimpster.

You can if you put your mind to it!

Anyone who would sit and type lyrics which can be clearly heard on the video posting obviously is not about to offer much by way of musical analysis, and is probably best ignored.

  • thank you darioso5. ths song is absolutely perfect. love, loneliness, and a fantastic voice. im a dude. but i love tom. his voice and his lyrics awesome

  • i wish i could just type lyrics and get a thumbs up. faggot

  • Brings back memories...If you like songs with meaning like this check out Shy by Sonata Arctica it's an amazing song with similar lyrics

  • thanks for the post. i love this song.

  • The guy you're with has up and split, the chair next to you's free, And I hope that you don't fall in love with me. And I hope that you don't fall in love with me. Now it's closing time, the music's fading out Last call for drinks, I'll have another stout. Turn around to look at you, you're nowhere to be found, I search the place for your lost face, guess I'll have another round And I think that I just fell in love with you.
  • Well I hope that I don't fall in love with you 'Cause falling in love just makes me blue, Well the music plays and you display your heart for me to see, I had a beer and now I hear you calling out for me And I hope that I don't fall in love with you. Well the room is crowded, there's people everywhere And I wonder, should I offer you a chair? Well if you sit down with this old clown, take that frown and break it, Before the evening's gone away,
  • Man... Just got dumped by a beautiful girl. This song brings it all back...

  • you know your stuff, my friend. :]

  • Cheers, itster.

Just some old songs heard across the years, tho.

  • this is the greatest sadest song i've ever heard

  • I danced with the person whom I had a crush over for this song. Once the song was over we fell in love. soon followed by our first kiss. I played the song through youtube. :)

  • Who covered this song? It's truly a worthy, and beautiful selection. I could swear that a country singer covered this, and perhaps a pop singer, as well. Tom is a great songwriter.

  • hootie and the blowfish did a cover of this at a couple of their concerts.

  • Emiliana Torrini did a cover of it. Pretty damn good too

  • What's with all the gay stuff? I scrolled down to read some comments after searching some of my personal Tom faves, and found a bunch of poorly spelled homophobic attacks. Not even sure where that comes into play here. What gives with you people?

  • i know what you mean. it really irritates me so see a comment someone left accusing someone or someones music to be gay...which i don't understand why someone would make that comment without knowing the truth. so i am definitely agreeing with you. i think they should take the ability to leave comments off unless people can say something worth reading.

  • Tom Waits is married with three kids......

  • Is that possible? Uuupps...

  • I'm not saying if I am or not. Naa Na Na Na Naa!

  • to Stoney386-finally someone with some sense,i also agree with your analogy of the song; the song is amazing. to all others worrying about someone elses sexuality: why do you care?- it's not your bizness, you ain't sleepn with him, JUDGE NOT LEAST THEE BE JUDGED.

  • The demo version on the early years 1 is better, but this does the trick

  • Can we get back to commenting on this awesome song?

It's truly heartfelt and speaks to my very soul.

To me it's about wasted opportunities.

He realises too late that he should have acted on his instincts, even if they had resulted in a rejection.

  • Somebody, I won't mention the name, started a most virulent and highly disturbed gay bashing line here. Why, I don't know. I also don't know, or care, whether Waits is gay, bi, hetero--what else is there? I do hasten to point out that this is a clearly hetero song, for whatever that's worth.

Psychopathic, dogmatic mindsets deprive some people (and they apparently feel compelled to try to ruin it for everyone else) of beauty, in all facets.

This song is lovely. Get over it psycho-boy.

  • You mean the comment wasn't just a bad-taste joke? Apart from homosexuality being self-evidently natural, if someone's kids were to get any sort of disease from a homosexual...err... aren't the kids likely to be homosexual too? And surely there aren't many people around so disturbed that they would feel that sort of mindless hatred for their own kids just because of their sexual orintation, so some gays are presumably ok. Come on, look at the name - they cannot be serious!

  • So Tom Waits is openly gay? I challenge anyone to find one internet interview where Tom Waits says he's a "gay homosexual".

  • your all silly! this goes out to all of you! wether you be gay, straight, into animas, little kids, magazines, inanimate objects or your own hand! GET LAIED! and stop wasting you freekin time and words.

  • well obviously you need to do the same thing because your wasting your time on youtube commenting a tom waits song

  • wouldn't mind it. but then again if thats what I wanted this would not be the song I would use to rouse that particular sprit.

  • This is stupid. He has a wife and kids. Besides, he's singing a song, that's all.

  • I don't understand. SmileBit299: Maybe you can clear things for me? In which numerous interviews has Tom Waits been an openly gay person? How can you even think that your kids will getting "f**ked up with some disease". I certainly respect your comment but can you maybe be a little more specific?

  • It's people like you and your innate fear that is the cause of the problems in this world. You can't even look at yourself honestly enough to see that you are a person full of fear and hatred that covers up your own insecurities. How can you say it isn't natural? If it wasn't natural it wouldn't happen... all that happens in this world is natural, to understand it all and appreciate the reasons why is the only way forward, the only way to be a free and open person,

  • and until you can release your inner fears and the hatred that comes from that you are going to remain a very repressed and naive person, and this will hold you back in life. Your own narrow mindedness will probably hurt you more than anyone else, let it all go and start to understand every person as an individual, stop putting everyone into groups such as gay, colour or creed...

  • have the strengh to look into each individuals eyes and be honest with them and yourself, listen to their personal story and be ready to have compassion and understanding... it will all come back on you if you don't. I am responding to SmilieBit299 btw.

  • BIGOT

  • SmileBit299 actively particiapates in the misinformed bigot lifestyle.

  • I don't know if that's true or not, and don't care. Does it diminish the beauty of the song? Why don't you do you best to purge yourself of ugly homophobia. Everyone's personal life is no one's business but their own. I can't understand why you and your ilk could possibly care.

  • most beautiful song I ever heard .......thank you for sharing.....

  • quality

  • Listening to this song and dying..

  • Yeah. I have this song on Tom Waits The Early Years, and it's just a notch slower and more intimate. beautifully, sad.

I think every person has has a similar moment or two.

  • this brings back grat memorys, love it

  • me four!

  • me three

  • me too

  • I just love this song!

  • I can't believe Tom Waits used to sing this conventionally, I'm too used to the unclear growling.

  • i love the unclear growling

  • I love Toms songs, but more often than not, I prefer Tom's songs when covered by others; Natalie Merchant and Nora Jones, for example.

But this song is perfect for Tom! It's like he channeled Harry Chapin.

  • to Chuck B....way up there in PA... :-) You remember dancing to Tom? Me too.... Love, V

  • Great!

    Christian

  • What a great song!

  • and I hope don;t falling love with you....but I have already did...

  • I have said it once and I will say it again this song describes my dating life all too close.... :( Nevertheless a truly beautiful song for the soul.

  • Actually, I am not a Tom Waits

fan, but in this song, I find pathos

    and something quite poignant.

  • oh my, i love this song. heard from the movie the prince and me... it is soooo great.

  • A wonderful song

  • Tom will reach your heart and your soul if you let him. I always let Tom in.

    JDH

  • his voice is much less earthy here.

  • What I find most amazing about Tom Waits is how he says so much with so few words.

  • You're right, and that's called Art. Ibsen, the Scandinavian Playwright, coined the concept(most usually translated in English as) KISS----Keep It Simple, Stupid!

Of course, the geniuous/irony behind that is that the straightforward can be wonderfully complex---like this tune.

Have you noticed that there is no bridge here? No chorus. It's just verse after verse. Booze after booze---and that's the Artistic Idea. He never meets her, but he falls in love. Lovely, pathetic? Who knows?

  • Come on! Ibsen didn´t coine anything, he just gave dullness and simulation a new face. Ibsen is just full of shit - he is dull and so are his plays. He is a Sham.

  • Man, I never thought that I'd inspire that kind of response from my comment. You're entitled to your opinion, but I have to tell you, you're in the minority there. As for myself, if I were asked to pick a "serious" dramatist to read, it would be Shakespeare, hands down. But Ibsen, in my opinion, ain't too shabby, either.

Anyway, the point is, this is a very fine tune.

  • Over analyze much???

  • I try not to. The trick, however, is to know when a little analysis is called for. Some tunes are simply elevator music, and while perhaps pleasant, don't demand any thought. This is not, in my opinion, one of those.

  • You can't overanalyze art. It's not in its nature.

  • tom waits is awesome.... he doesnt suck...

  • lol...

  • great song.......brilliant album

  • Every time Tom sings a slow ballad like this tears rush to my eyes.

The funny thing is, nothing bothers me, scares me or even makes me cry.

There is no other artist that affects me the way he does.

Maybe if saw a psychiatrist I'd get an answer but that ain't every happening.

  • I know what you mean...he effects me the same

way...but I'm an old softie. This is just one

of the best..I just love him.

    joanie

  • It's as though his voice/lyrics touch the listener on their own level, making it seem that he knows the pain that you feel.

  • Don't see a psychiatrist!!!! Savour the experience. A shrink would only spoil it!

  • Stupenda.

  • Mr. Waits pushs every button in ways that pull in feeings hidden places I didn't think there were. It's like discovering Hemingway at 50.

  • If you want to enchant a lady, nothing better than to confect a 300 song mini disc (hey I'm behind the times) mix for her with this as one of the tracks. Okay, it's not guaranteed, but I'm still hopeful that one day she'll get the message and reconsider her life hahaha.

    What a song.

  • I love this song....and it's a very special ringtone for a very special someone I know. His voice with all of the inflection of sorrow, yet hope. Now, who has him singing Phantom 309? No one! I've never heard anywhere else cept on an old cd I use to have. Please help me find it!

  • It is one of the tracks on "Nighthawks" vinyl. I used to own all his pre-85 vinyl. Sadly, they were lost in a fire. After my dog, they were my most precious possessions.

  • i love jon bon jovi's version on ally mcbeal!!

  • Folks: From a singer/player/writer's point of view---I would kill to have written this song. It is funky, it is sweet, it is sung by a typical TW "loser", it is melodic, it is charming, it is sweet, it is very sad----it is awesome!

Musically, it's also unique. How many of you realized that it is just verse after verse---no "bridge", no "chorus", no "middle eight".

Some did, I bet, but most didn't. Why? Because it is so fine, just the way it is.

  • mrmesq53, spot on. All the best!

  • The song is so real to life!!! It brings out that inner feelings of love and lost!!!

Just a great song!!! Thanks for the post!!!

  • anybody know whare i can find this song but sang by brian kennedy and juliet turner?

  • It's on Juliet Turner's second album. I thinl it's called "Burn the Black Suit"

  • cant find it on Y-T so il just have to buy it.nice one!!

  • how can we not fall in love.. i walked the sky fell from above..........i love my children my lil turtle doves...........ask me not love maybe one or two.......felt like born in wrong time.........for life more than sex ...love to share to one and all...........how can we not love one or two..........sent from above..little thing called love..........

  • Tom Waits music is genius. From 1973 til now on his 2008 European tour. Brilliant he is.

  • I love it!!!!!

  • search the place for you lost face

  • love this song. ^-^

  • This is so pretty....

  • Tom Waits for me is so hit and miss...I like the sound of this one...some of his other stuff..not so much..sorry to all your Tom Waits groupies hehe :)

  • no problem. however do your research. this guy is so good ,depending on your mood . ive listened to him over the last25 years{since i was 20he has so evolved compared to dylan, young ,etc!!

  • The same here - This song is great but other tunes are, well, not that exciting as this one.

  • Tom has a song for any mood you maybe in.. :)

  • My all time fav. Tom Waits tune....

  • Heard a rumor he wrote this song in Mulligans Pub in Dublin. Anyone know if it's true?

  • Anyone that gives this less than 5 stars is deaf !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • love this song x

  • This a great, a GREAT song, but I like the one immediately before it even better, Ol' 55.

  • this is possibly one of the best albums ever IMO

  • possibly my faovouite song, beautiful waits is genius not many come close

  • Falling in love makes me blue too....

  • I love this song!

  • so beautiful

  • fell in love with Tom Waits long ago, ain't gonna change that.

  • It´s so...beautiful..i can not find words to say more. Thanks, Tom, see u in Dublin soon.

  • Tom has been my drunken gutter buddy for well-nigh 30 years. Love the man's music... Thanks for including this.

  • Perfect...

  • This is one of those songs that I can listen to 5 or 6 times in a row and not get tired of.. Not many songs can do that to me!

  • I love Waits, but I like is later albums a lot better.

He started to get really good when he became more conceptual.

Alice is awesome, Bone Machine ... Real Gone ...

Beatiful song and album still ... !

  • If I were to compile a list of the greatest songs ever written, five or six would be Tom Waits compositions. Literally. I HATE when people throw around the word "genius" to describe everyone, but if anyone's a genius it's this guy.

  • Let's have the list...?

I'm pretty new to ol' Tom here

    But I'm interested

  • 1)Jersey Girl

  • Happily i don't hear genius that often, I guess they don't make them like they use to.

  • LOVE the song

  • Closing Time, best Waits album ever.

  • I've gotta go for 'Nighthawks at the Diner' - rarely has a live album ever captured atmosphere the way that did. Alone the deafening silence during 'Big Joe...'. Stunning!!

  • i love it!!

but how come his voice isnt a gruff and original as it is in other vids? =S

    xxxx

  • Because this was from his very first album

  • Well in his early years he went for a particular sound rather then do his own stuff. learned you can change your voice by yelling into a pillow and hasn't looked back since

  • this song makes me feel very close to my Love, that lives far away, a sweet kiss F.

  • What a song!

  • brilliant TOM

  • Life in melody

  • i just dont want this song to end ..what do you listen to after that

  • i saw Tom in the early 80's in Melbourne. and he didn't play anything off Closing time or Heart of Saturday Night, my fav albums. Still great to see him.

  • first time I had my heart broken I spent a year in my Dorm room sh3tface listening to Tom-This man speaks dirrectly to the soul-

  • An original...can't help falling in love with it...

  • I got lucky and was allowed to work at a concert of his he just recently did in Houston. It was amazing, and I got paid :-) He didn't play this song unfortunately, but the show was incredible nonetheless.

  • love love love this song

  • Dont ya know? Have we ever been there? I am there most every night,......Its hell when your old and ugly, surrounded with pretty girls that are young and,........I gotta go.

  • I love the line "These old tom cat feelings you don't understand."

  • This song is sheer brilliance. It's just the way love should be, simple and honest. Tom Waits is fricking amazing!

  • I cannot stop listening to this song. Every time I hear it, it goes deeper into my soul. It breaks my heart yet makes me feel so happy at the same time. A lot of his music does that to me. That is what I call a musical genius. Genius. Thanks, Tom. I love you.
