It costs about .03 to print a federal reserve note of any denomination. Then a majic wand is waved and it becomes valuable as money. It is then loaned to the US treasury at face value plus interest. But most of the time the money is created from thin air and is never printed but just digitally deposited. The income tax is simply a tax put on us to keep us down so we can't become wealthy. All the taxes collected can't even pay down the interest on the national debt. Its a trap.

Public services are a part of modern civilization. There's a reason the smartest people in the world haven't packed up and moved to Galt's Gulch yet (an opt-out from public services).

My point is each of us owes humankind. We make sure poor, disadvantaged people get an education, health care and food without having to beg for it from some private charity. The state is supposed to, and in a sometimes effective, sometimes ineffective way does protect basic human dignity.

I've read some Hobbes and Locke, and at I think social contract theory is an important reason for government. The state of nature benefits almost nobody, and I'm afraid that's exactly what Anarcho-Capitalism would result in.

I disagree with the centralization of power Hobbes proposes.

Power should be distributed equally among the citizenry, but the will of the people as expressed by a vote on an issue should be binding for all. Otherwise, the system will fail thanks to free riders.

There is an argument over whether it does so *efficiently* (I would say overall yes) but it does not overwhelmingly go into the pockets of private interests. It also gives us the privilege of using public roads, public transport, public health care (except in the U.S) and protection against misfortune. All privileges have a cost, and that cost is taxes. How could these functions be fulfilled more efficiently in a decentralized uncoordinated manner?

As for useless wars and weapons... voters could prioritize such issues. Most don't. Most complain about social security without considering the 20% of the U.S budget that goes towards the military.

To the first part, most of Europe. I'm German by birth and I had great public schooling. One incentive is that one is going to be looked down upon and given crappy positions with less pay if one does poorly. Another is that many people in social jobs actually care about the outcomes. I know I would hate teaching if my students hated coming to class.

To point two, I hope I'll never require direct social assistance. That makes me luckier than the people who do. Let's do more for them, not less.

I agree. I think a referendum should be required for the starting of any war. In fact, I think that we should be able to vote on the issues without the middle man. I don't want to vote for one party's positions, I want to vote my positions. I'm for transition to direct democracy but I don't see what the abolishment of an overarching state as a centralized organ of management would achieve, other than making it extremely difficult to coordinate any large project.
